"It is rumored that the true headquarters is in some desert, but that's just hearsay; in any case, this research base we are currently in is practically the largest known base the corporation possesses."
This was just one of the many rumors Zheng Zha had overheard. Aside from that, there were experimental reports concerning his somatic cells. No matter how those people researched, ordinary people injected with his somatic cells only achieved a physical strength at most double that of a normal human, which was similar to the effect of injecting Dragon's Blood. This greatly frustrated the researchers. If Zheng Zha's own power had been weak, they could have attributed the limitation to the G-Virus's inherent strength. However, Zheng Zha had demonstrated power ten times, even more than ten times, that of a normal person. This meant their research direction was flawed. Setting aside whether ordinary people would suffer a backlash from Zheng Zha's somatic cells, they couldn't even fully unlock the G-Virus's potential. This situation persisted for ten days, ultimately leading to the disappearance of several researchers from the base, while dozens of new ones were brought in.
Zheng Zha watched the coming and going of the researchers with cold detachment. In the end, death was death; dying at the hands of the Umbrella Corporation felt no different than dying at his own hands.
Because he had behaved "well" during this period, his movement within the research base had been greatly expanded. For instance, he could now freely visit Alice.
The movie's heroine, infected with the primary T-Virus solution, was currently submerged entirely in a nutrient solution. In a few days, she would fully recover. The day she regained consciousness would be the same day the Central Continent Team launched their sneak attack on the Umbrella Corporation base.
"It's almost time…" Zheng Zha mumbled to himself. It was evening, the time when the base's shielding effect would weaken. Only during this window, for about five minutes each day, could he use the Mind Chain to contact the rest of the Central Continent Team outside.
"Zheng Zha, can you hear my voice?" Zhan Lan's voice came, shifting from faint to clear, gradually manifesting in Zheng Zha's consciousness.
Zheng Zha smiled and said, "Zhan Lan, I've told you many times, don't try to force your way through the shielding layer so early. It will deplete your mental energy significantly. Are you a fool? Mental power is different from physical stamina; once depleted, it takes a long time to recover."
Zhan Lan's laugh immediately followed. She chuckled, "I'm not early at all; I'm contacting you precisely on schedule. Don't think I'm always anxious about you… Let's get down to business. Chu Xuan has cracked the internal map of the research base. I'll link our minds now."
Zheng Zha grunted in assent.
Seconds later, he heard Chu Xuan's characteristically detached voice. The man spoke with utter flatness, "En, the internal map of the research base has been decrypted. I will now transmit the base layout directly into your mind. Furthermore, the highest-ranking executive for Umbrella Corporation across these two bases is a director named Richard. You can take him hostage on the day Alice awakens. After that, it will depend on your performance—completely demolish this research base."
Zheng Zha said no more.
He silently absorbed the base schematics that suddenly appeared in his mind. After several minutes, the layout slowly faded from his consciousness. The five minutes of communication time had ended, yet Zheng Zha remained standing there silently, meticulously recalling every detail of the map. Time marched forward. Because of his "good" behavior, Zheng Zha was granted access to more and more within the facility. Other than the most confidential matters—such as the Tracker models or the most advanced Evolved Lickers—which remained beyond his sight, he saw everything else: zombie specimens submerged in T-Virus solution, experimental subjects at various stages of T-Virus infection, and even their preserved internal organs.
The specimen that shocked and enraged him the most was that of an eight or nine-year-old Caucasian girl, floating peacefully in a container. However, her lower body was a crawler's crimson muscular form, devoid of skin, revealing only raw muscle. He had heard the researchers claim this was the result of genetic modification: the girl had been injected with genetically modified Crawler cells, causing partial mutation, resulting in this half-human, half-Crawler appearance… Seeing this, Zheng Zha's eyes turned entirely crimson. He said nothing, simply turned, and left the little girl's specimen exhibition room. The steel railing he had gripped in passing was twisted into scrap metal.
(Or perhaps, just as Chu Xuan told him a few days ago, the "Main God" only inherited the death-wish of "Evolution" from the Sages, unable to discern whether this "evolution" was good or bad for humanity. Ordinary people in the real world, after enduring countless horror movie worlds, countless life-and-death struggles, and constant evolution, are considered lower-tier beings by the evolved members of the Reincarnation Squad upon their return. They might be treated as playthings, experimental subjects, specimens, or even food by the returning squad members. In this sense, the existence of the "Main God" inadvertently destroys humanity rather than evolving it. But…)(Even if a large part of my body's genes are no longer human, even if I have become cruel from enduring countless horrors, to the point where I might kill the innocent or abandon the burdensome—even so… My heart! It will always be a human heart! I absolutely will not let humanity suffer the kind of atrocity I see before me. Absolutely not!)
Zheng Zha counted the days, waiting for Alice's awakening. He had seen too much; his inner self was saturated with accumulated rage. Since the battle against the India Continent Team, it had been a long time since such intense fury had welled up in him. If he didn't vent this anger, he feared he would suffer internal injury from suppressing it. Fortunately, besides the human specimens, he also had access to some hidden videotapes from Umbrella. In these tapes, he discovered documentation from the Resident Evil 2 period, specifically footage of the Demon Reincarnation Squad massacring zombies, particularly the terrifying combat prowess displayed by his own clone.
In the video records, the Demon Reincarnation Squad was seen aboard a bus. It was evident they hadn't deployed the Green Goblin Glider yet, or perhaps they were simply toying with the Central Continent Team, not immediately closing the distance. When they encountered a massive horde of zombies, it was Clone Zheng Zha alone who engaged. Facing that dense swarm of mutated zombies and giant Crawlers, Clone Zheng Zha stood alone in the street. Behind him unfurled a pair of massive bat wings, and in one hand, he dragged a two-handed greatsword wreathed in black flames. This appearance made him look utterly demonic.
It wasn't just appearance; Clone Zheng Zha possessed terrifying power that Zheng Zha himself could scarcely imagine. During their previous confrontation, the clone had easily killed him without even seeming to enter the Genetic Lock state. In these video records, the clone's terrifying strength was unmistakable. With a casual swing of the greatsword, black flames spread out in a fan shape. Every zombie or Crawler touched by the black fire was instantly consumed and reduced to ash.
Clone Zheng Zha’s speed was also blinding. Though he appeared stationary, in the next second he was at the other end of the recording frame. This speed alone was nearly faster than Zheng Zha's "Explosion" state. What chilled Zheng Zha to the bone most was that his clone seemed far from using his full strength; he wielded the greatsword and moved/flew with an air of leisure. In this high-intensity combat, the clone's expression registered only 'relaxed'… Zheng Zha watched this recording dozens of times, yet he could find no flaw in the clone—his movements, speed, power, destructive capability, and even his composure could only be described as perfect! (Then… could "Destruction" defeat him?) For the first time, Zheng Zha doubted the destructive capability of his ultimate skill. He wasn't sure if he could defeat such a powerful clone, even using "Destruction."
Time crept by, and finally, the day of Alice's awakening arrived. On this day, even the middle-aged man abandoned the G-Virus cell experiments to attend to Alice. He stated that Alice was the most excellent experimental subject besides Zheng Zha; even with Zheng Zha, the G-Virus carrier, Umbrella still wished to keep Alice alive.
Zheng Zha did not go to see Alice. He merely donned the four Charged Mithril Rings from his Spatial Ring, then, following the base layout provided by Chu Xuan, began moving toward the director's office.
