Wang Guan had to admit that his initial knowledge of the Penghu Islands stemmed from an old song his grandmother used to sing, "Grandma's Penghu Bay."
Sunshine, sandy beaches, ocean waves, cacti, and an old sea captain. Unfortunately, no matter how beautiful the scenery was, Wang Guan was in no mood to appreciate it now; upon arrival, he immediately hunkered down in the yacht to wait.
Before long, Wang Guan received the update: Mo You had already gone ashore and taken a car to an unknown destination. However, the ease with which he moved suggested he was highly experienced and had visited many times before.
Wang Guan remained completely unfazed. He simply instructed them to keep watching, ensuring they weren't lost but also that they weren't detected. Then, it was back to waiting until Mo You finally stopped moving before he would disembark the yacht and find lodging on the island.
"What's the situation now?"
At that same moment, Old Fang called to check in.
"He's settled into a hotel."
Wang Guan frowned, "I wonder if he's grown suspicious, or if he's simply planning to stay one night before transferring to another island tomorrow."
"I see," Old Fang mused for a moment before confirming, "It's probably the latter. It’s quite late already; staying the night is normal. It shouldn't suggest suspicion."
"I think so too," Wang Guan agreed. "Everyone is being extremely cautious; no one should have slipped up."
"Good. Keep watching him, and contact me if anything happens..."
After ending the call, Wang Guan maintained his composure, eating and resting normally. However, just as dawn broke, he was awakened by news that Mo You had left the hotel.
"What? He left?"
Wang Guan shot awake instantly, urgently asking, "Where did he go?"
"It seems to be in the direction of Baisha Island."
Hearing this, Wang Guan didn't waste a second. He hastily splashed some water on his face, skipped breakfast, and rushed into the waiting vehicle, speeding away. It took quite some time before he managed to catch up to his target.
As they drew near, the driver instinctively slowed down at Wang Guan's unspoken signal, trailing far behind. They slowly proceeded northeast along the coastal road; crossing the sea bridge would lead them to Baisha Island.
Baisha Island was also relatively prosperous. It was home to the famous Banyan Tree of Tongliang, rumored to be over three hundred years old. It was said that during the Kangxi era, it arrived aboard a merchant ship, but the vessel encountered a terrible storm near Baisha Island and sank. Only one or two small banyan seedlings survived, drifting ashore near Tongliang Village.
These seedlings were found and casually planted on the island. Over the next few centuries, the tiny saplings had grown into towering trees, their roots intertwined and foliage dense, resembling a colossal, opened umbrella.
As the car passed beneath the massive canopy, Wang Guan couldn't help but take several admiring glances, muttering about the marvel of it all. The original trunk of the great banyan had rotted away, its branches dipping into the earth, yet more than twenty secondary trunks had sprouted around it, creating a natural pavilion covering an area of over six hundred square meters.
Witnessing this, Wang Guan couldn't help but marvel at the strange, wonderful workings of nature.
Yet, after his brief contemplation, Wang Guan noticed that Mo You hadn't stopped on Baisha Island. Instead, he pressed on, quickly reaching a large bridge. The driver explained this was the famous Penghu Cross-Sea Bridge, stretching over two thousand meters like a rainbow soaring across the expanse.
Beyond the bridge lay the second largest island of the Penghu archipelago, Wengu Island, also known as Xiyu because it sat to the west of the main area. Names meant little to Wang Guan; what mattered was that once they reached Wengu Island, Mo You’s speed noticeably decreased, showing signs of stopping.
"Excellent."
Wang Guan felt a surge of relief and quickly signaled, "Don't follow directly anymore. Turn around and circle wide around the side to avoid him noticing anything."
The driver nodded, spinning the wheel to create distance from the target. Simultaneously, Wang Guan observed that Mo You's vehicle had indeed stopped in front of a residence nestled in elegant surroundings.
"Keep a close watch. See if there is anyone else inside the house."
After giving the order, Wang Guan grew calmer, though he couldn't quite suppress the excitement building inside him. He had a strong premonition that the person he sought might be hidden within that house.
However, at this crucial juncture, no mistakes could be afforded. Wang Guan composed himself, immediately found a place to stay on the island, and forced himself to adopt a mundane demeanor, keeping a distance from the residence to avoid giving away any clues that would ruin everything.
Of course, once settled, Wang Guan didn't forget to report back to Old Fang. Then, transforming into a hunter, he waited patiently for his prey to appear. He didn't have to wait long; a day later, a high-definition photograph was delivered into his hands.
Though the picture was a discreet shot, the resolution was crystal clear, and it was a direct frontal view, showing everything plainly. The photo showed two men seemingly in conversation. One was Mo You; the other, Wang Guan recognized immediately: Meng Jian.
"Just as I suspected..."
In that moment, Wang Guan displayed neither elation nor dismay, feeling as though everything was unfolding precisely as planned. A subtle smile touched his lips, and he quickly pressed for confirmation, "Just him? No one else?"
"No," the surveillance operative shook his head. "The others are just the cleaning lady and cook. I checked; she’s confirmed to be a local resident who has always lived there."
"Is that so?"
Wang Guan’s brow furrowed, and much of his initial joy evaporated. He was certain Meng Jian was merely an accomplice of Mr. Zhu Da, but the principal target remained hidden. Capturing a pawn was useless; worse, it might frighten Mr. Zhu Da away, making the effort counterproductive.
"I knew this wouldn't be easy..." Wang Guan sighed softly and immediately commanded, "Continue surveillance, focus the main effort on that man. As for Mo You, watch him if you can, but ease up if following becomes risky."
Following these instructions, Wang Guan quickly contacted Old Fang, and after a discussion, they reached a decision: in this situation, stability was paramount. If the enemy made no move, neither would they; meet infinite changes with steadfastness. Mr. Zhu Da had come to Taiwan with other objectives, and he couldn't remain inactive indefinitely. Once he moved, he would surely reveal a weakness—that would be the perfect opportunity.
Wang Guan fully agreed and followed the sensible advice, continuing to wait for the right moment.
Another two days passed in this patient vigil. There had been no activity at the residence. If the surveillance team hadn't periodically sent back photos confirming Meng Jian was still inside, Wang Guan would have suspected he had already slipped away.
However, fortune favors the persistent. After the long wait, Wang Guan finally saw movement.
That morning, Mo You went to the seaside to sketch, a habit he had maintained for the last two or three days—nothing out of the ordinary. But shortly after Mo You left, Meng Jian also emerged from the house.
Upon receiving the news, Wang Guan's spirits lifted, and he made thorough preparations. As expected, Meng Jian headed straight for the pier upon leaving and boarded a speedboat, vanishing into the vast ocean in an instant.
Wang Guan, meanwhile, was not idle. He reached the pier immediately, where another speedboat awaited him.
"Follow him."
At Wang Guan's signal, the speedboat shot forward like an arrow, slicing through the waves. He wasn't worried about Meng Jian growing suspicious from being followed; recreational boaters were common on the water, and he was disguised anyway, so detection seemed unlikely.
Of course, tailing someone also required finesse; it couldn't be too overt. Hidden among other passing speedboats, Meng Jian probably suspected nothing and sped onward.
After about half an hour, Meng Jian reached a more secluded patch of sea. Vessels were scarce in this area, and pressing closer now would risk exposing him.
Seeing this, Wang Guan immediately signaled the driver to slow down, falling into a moment of hesitation.
If he followed any closer, he was almost certain to be discovered, potentially alerting Meng Jian and spoiling the entire plan. But if he didn't follow, Meng Jian might be heading for a secret meeting with Mr. Zhu Da, and missing such a golden opportunity would be a monumental failure.
As he pondered, Meng Jian’s speedboat disappeared over the horizon. Wang Guan quickly pulled out his high-powered binoculars to observe, realizing that in the direction Meng Jian had gone, a luxury yacht was anchored.
It seemed that yacht was Meng Jian's destination.
In an instant, Wang Guan made his decision, waving his hand. "Circle around. Take a wide loop and approach the yacht from the side."
Wang Guan had no choice but to take a gamble, hoping the yacht was indeed the target. If not, he would rather sacrifice this chance, as long as Meng Jian remained unaware. After all, one must cast a long line to catch a big fish.
At his command, the speedboat began its wide arc. After more than twenty minutes of circling, it finally turned back, cutting straight through the water toward the yacht. Behind Wang Guan’s speedboat, a man wearing only swim trunks and sunglasses was skillfully riding a wakeboard.
Necessity dictated sacrifice; Wang Guan had to play the part. After several bumpy tumbles into the water, he managed to master the balance of the board and stopped falling. Then, as he neared the yacht, he "unluckily" plunged back into the sea. After a brief struggle, the "exhausted" Wang Guan was hauled aboard and lay on the deck of the speedboat to recover.
The speedboat now slowed its pace, gradually closing in on the luxurious vessel.
During this time, Wang Guan was not resting. His supernatural ability pierced through the yacht’s multiple decks, seeping into the interior spaces. After a brief search, he spotted a person.
A man dressed in a traditional Zhongshan suit. His hair was slightly streaked with gray but meticulously combed, possessing a sheen that caught the light with a faint silvery glow. He also had a few neatly trimmed whiskers and a pair of large, dark-rimmed glasses that obscured most of his face.
Overall, he was a figure radiating scholarly elegance and refinement.
"Mr. Zhu Da!"
At first glance, Wang Guan was struck by a mixture of surprise and joy, feeling suddenly the exhilarating rush of achieving a great breakthrough—like a strong wind aiding a ship to sail toward the vast sea.
