July 2007 saw Liu Hui freshly graduated from university. After securing an offer with a major state-owned enterprise in Bashan City through their campus recruitment fair, he awaited his official start date at the end of the month. With this empty period between graduation and employment, Liu packed up his belongings using savings from part-time work during college to explore the country and broaden his horizons.
Today found him carrying his backpack into Chuzhou - a cradle of Chinese civilization rich with ancient landmarks that had long intrigued him. As he meandered through Chuzhou's old city walls, completely absorbed in their weathered majesty, two bicycles rounding a corner collided with Liu without warning. The impact sent him sprawling to the ground while he heard two women scream.
Though crashing backward onto his pack prevented any injury, Liu immediately realized his negligence had obstructed bike lanes. Helping up one rider who'd sprained her ankle, he felt an electric shock through their hands that left both trembling and mutually convinced they recognized each other's souls.
The second cyclist, Lan Sicui, emerged from a ditch to scold him while helping her friend Shu Yan. As Liu supported Shu's injury, the electricity returned between them despite Sicui's demands for compensation. At Shu's request, they avoided hospital costs by heading to a nearby clinic instead.
On the way there and later home, Liu discovered his backpack became their makeshift transport as he pushed her bicycle while she clung nervously to him - a position that only deepened their connection when a loose stone sent her involuntarily wrapping her arms around his waist.
By Shu's suburban courtyard with its garden, Liu learned of her factory's upcoming recruitment drive and eagerly offered his services before heading to the budget inn her aunt ran after exchanging phone numbers.
Later at Shu's home, Sicui confronted her friend about the sudden infatuation while she wrote in a new diary: "July 15th, 2007 - I found my destined one on Chuzhou's ancient walls... Liu Hui..."
