We stood ready, and before long, three wolves, each taller than we were, lunged toward us. It was unbelievable that they were running low to the ground yet were still taller than us.
This suggested these wolves were comparable in size to a mature water buffalo, perhaps even larger. Facing such monstrosities, we were stunned, yet we all secretly sweated.
Wukong, arms crossed over his chest, warned, "Be careful. These creatures are demonic beasts from another planet.
Although they look remarkably like Earth's wolves, their habits and abilities are entirely different." I sensed the psychic energy radiating from the colossal wolves, yet I couldn't discern any difference between them and ordinary wolves. As I pondered this, the giant wolves suddenly halted about fifty meters in front of us.
This strange behavior immediately caught my attention. Looking closely, I saw they were using their razor-sharp claws to dig into the earth.
I noticed their forelimbs were significantly shorter than those of a normal wolf, yet much thicker, clearly indicating heavy use that caused this mutation. Indeed, they dug far faster than common wolves, and within seconds, their upper bodies were buried.
A few moments later, they vanished beneath the surface. Due to the obstruction, I lost track of their psychic presence, cutting off my surveillance.
Just then, Nie Chuan announced, "They are coming from underground—fast!" Hardly had he finished speaking when a section of the ground beneath our feet suddenly bulged upward, something forcefully breaking the soil. Fortunately, we were all trained; we quickly dodged aside.
As soon as we cleared the area, a massive black wolf covered in coarse fur burst forth with the crushing force of a whirlwind, thump! We were forced to retreat repeatedly by the shower of flying dirt clods.
This initial attack from the black wolf was immensely powerful; I felt that even a parked truck would have been instantly ripped in half. I knew this wasn't the time for astonishment, as several other spots beneath our feet were beginning to heave.
Clearly, the wolves underground could pinpoint our positions on the surface to launch such precise strikes. The three of us scrambled to evade again, narrowly avoiding the attacks, though we were left covered in dust and grime.
Seeing their pounces miss, those black wolves didn't press the attack like ordinary wolves. Instead, they let out a few howls toward us before sinking back into their tunnels.
I muttered to myself whether these were wolves or gophers—their tactics were utterly devious. At this moment, Wukong, cradling his Ruyi Jingu Bang, kept his eyes half-closed, seemingly dozing, yet he remarked, "On their planet, these wolves hold a status similar to groundhogs because many massive predators live on the surface.
Therefore, they must adopt this hunting method." Wukong’s explanation sounded exactly like a nature documentary host, leaving me somewhat speechless. However, his detailed knowledge of that world suggested he must share some profound connection with that planet.
Without further thought, the black wolves' second wave of attack arrived. This time, having figured out their pattern, we counterattacked as we dodged the initial strike.
I used a sudden forward surge to propel myself three or four meters sideways, and as the black wolf erupted from the ground, I unleashed the triple-layered Flame Psychic Power concentrated on my hands toward that location based on instinct. Three layers of flame power were enough to shatter a boulder taller than a man; I was certain that if the wolf took a direct hit, even if it didn't die, it would lose half its life.
When my psychic energy struck, a cloud of smoke erupted with a thump! "Got it!" I rejoiced internally and rushed toward the smoke, anxious to see if the wolf was dead.
To my utter shock, just as I took a few steps forward, a black claw shot out of the smoke with blinding speed toward me. I instantly channeled my psychic power again, violently propelling myself backward.
Landing on the ground, I didn't immediately attend to my own safety, realizing that if I faced this, Daxiong and Nie Chuan must also be in danger. Sure enough, when I turned to look at Daxiong, I saw him nearly torn in two by a wolf claw.
Fortunately, at the critical moment, he managed to use a Fireball spell to momentarily stall the paw. When I looked at Nie Chuan, cold sweat beaded on my forehead.
Nie Chuan had been knocked to the ground by a black wolf, its massive jaws opening wide, about to clamp down on his neck. "Freeze!" At the crucial moment, I had no choice but to activate the Immobilization Spell, buying Nie Chuan half a second.
Simultaneously, I summoned him with a gesture, pulling him out from under the wolf's body using psychic force. When time resumed, all three wolves seemed utterly bewildered.
They immediately let out fierce snarls at me before diving back into their holes. During this brief respite, Nie Chuan asked me, "What just happened?
Did none of our attacks land?" I shook my head. "No, it seemed what emerged from the ground wasn't the wolf itself, but just a plume of black wind." "Are you saying these wolves can use sorcery, and they anticipated our counterattack, calculating exactly when to strike back?" Nie Chuan questioned.
Before I could answer, the lounging Wukong interjected, "All life forms in that world possess intelligence comparable to humans. However, because intelligent species are so numerous, they are perpetually engaged in territorial wars, each striving for dominance.
As a result, that world remains quite primitive." A pack of wolves with intelligence nearly equal to humans, and outnumbering us—victory seemed impossible. It is often said that besides intelligence, humans are the weakest creatures on Earth: lacking sharp claws or teeth, unable to fly or traverse the seas, intolerant of even slightly high temperatures, and painfully slow runners.
It is only because humans possess intelligence that we invented guns to compensate for our weak weapons, aircraft and submarines for our inability to fly or dive, air conditioning for the heat, and motorcycles and cars for our slow pace. Now, we faced monsters with inherently powerful weapons and an intellect matching humans—a fundamental disadvantage in terms of lineage.
Honestly, the situation was extremely dangerous, yet Wukong stood nearby watching, which gave me confidence that he believed we could win. My anxiety eased slightly, and I told Daxiong and Nie Chuan, "Although these wolves are highly intelligent, they are still beasts.
Let's not overthink it; we'll deal with them the way we handle wild animals." Nie Chuan added, "Are you suggesting we treat them as if we were fighting a pack of oversized gophers?" Daxiong replied, "If it were me, I'd flood their tunnels with water and drown the wretched things." Hearing this sparked an idea in me. "We don't have water, but we have fire, and we have wind.
Wind fuels fire; it can melt even steel." Daxiong clearly understood my intent and quickly conjured a fireball, launching it into the nearest hole. Seeing the rescue enter the tunnel, I immediately propelled myself high into the air with my psychic power and then cast the Wind Charm directly into the cavern.
The gale whipped up sand, driving the fireball deep into the tunnel, and instantly, firelight flared from within. Thick smoke, accompanied by a reddish glow, illuminated several openings, and several black wolves shrieked as they scrambled out.
Crack! Crack!
As the black wolves burst from the earth, Nie Chuan pulled the trigger. Unable to use his spells now, he had to resort to a handgun against the monsters—a rather awkward predicament.
However, the bullets striking the wolves were like hitting steel plates; they merely sparked and deflected away. They didn't injure the wolves but only enraged them further.
Seeing that their large tunnels were compromised, the wolves charged directly at Nie Chuan. Pouncing, slashing, and biting—this was what normal wolves did, and it played right into our hands.
Although the wolves' fur was as hard as body armor, they were still vulnerable to fire. So, I gathered the remaining Flame Psychic Power within me and directed it at one of the black wolves.
The psychic attack was incredibly fast; the wolf had no time to react before a ball of fire ignited on its back. It screamed and spun in place, right into the path of a punch from Daxiong, which sent it tumbling five or six meters backward.
Daxiong's heavy blow this time was far more violent than before, and his fist carried the power of flame. When it struck the wolf's brow, its entire head seemed to detonate like a bomb, exploding in a flash of red fire.
I had learned this move during my sparring matches with Wukong, and its earth-shattering power truly shocked me. The black wolf fell, struggled briefly, and then lay still—clearly dead from that blow.
The other wolves, who had been surrounding Nie Chuan, saw their companion brutally killed and madly lunged at Daxiong. No matter how high their intelligence, even humans have moments of impulse; this pack of black wolves was now like enraged, irrational humans—purely bestial.
No longer holding back, I landed on the ground and launched a charged punch at one of the black wolves. My technique mirrored Daxiong's, concentrating my psychic power into my fist.
This punch landed heavily on the wolf's abdomen, then the psychic energy detonated, forming a black tornado that shredded the wolf into pieces, scattering them outward. The sound I heard was like tearing apart a ragged cloth, and my face was completely smeared with wolf blood.
I hadn't anticipated such a gruesome scene, and yet more wolves were charging toward us. I handled them calmly; soon, Daxiong and I had created a ground littered with wolf corpses.
