The hospital representative knocked down by Zhou Guofeng was none other than Guo Yong, the director of Jinghe Hospital.
Zhou Guofeng, completely unaware of whom he had collided with, charged towards Zhang Yang, his hands instantly reaching out to grab him.
With Zhang Yang's current level of prowess, how could he allow himself to be caught? As Zhou Guofeng rushed to the doorway, he found Zhang Yang had suddenly vanished from his sight!
The next instant, everyone in the conference room felt their vision blur. Zhang Yang, who had just been by the door, had somehow entered and was precisely steadying Guo Yong, who had been knocked to the floor.
“Thank you, young man,” Guo Yong said, smiling as he realized it was Zhang Yang helping him up. He tested his limbs; nothing seemed seriously wrong.
“It’s nothing, you’re the director of Jinghe Hospital, aren’t you? Everyone was just stating their terms; why did it seem like you didn’t say a single word the entire time?” Zhang Yang asked with a humble smile while supporting Guo Yong.
Guo Yong chuckled, shook his head, and casually remarked, “Our Jinghe Hospital doesn’t have that kind of money, nor can we guarantee an immediate, exceptional promotion for you. I, an old man, have no other talents to offer except the greatest amount of freedom and trust within Jinghe Hospital, allowing you to fully exert yourself and genuinely relieve suffering for our patients.”
Among the various offers, this condition was certainly unremarkable.
Guo Yong knew this clearly himself. Before meeting Zhang Yang, he had genuinely hoped to secure this intern, even being prepared to offer fifty thousand as the student’s salary.
But after witnessing the scene before him, he completely abandoned that thought. Putting aside the financially robust Renji Hospital, or Southeast Union Hospital, which ranked first in the entire province, even those several hospitals from out of town were far superior to his small Jinghe Hospital.
Jinghe Hospital truly had little competitive edge beyond offering Zhang Yang the maximum level of authority and trust.
Yet, at this moment, Zhang Yang felt moved.
With so many hospitals, choosing was indeed troublesome. Regardless of money or authority, these things held little importance for Zhang Yang in his current state. Since he was going for an internship, Zhang Yang desired to do substantial work and make a difference; therefore, if Guo Yong could truly grant him the utmost authority and trust, Jinghe Hospital was undeniably the most suitable choice.
However, as he helped Guo Yong up, the representatives from the other hospitals immediately surrounded Zhang Yang, bombarding him with rapid-fire requests, all hoping he would consider their institutions.
At this point, Guo Yong was again squeezed to the edge of the crowd.
Zhu Daoqi walked over. Guo Yong smiled at him good-naturedly, accepting the situation: “Now I know just how extraordinary this student Zhang Yang is.”
Zhu Daoqi glanced at Zhang Yang, who was encircled by the crowd, and sincerely felt happy for him.
For a mere student to reach this level—even if he wasn't his teacher—was enough to make Zhu Daoqi feel proud.
Just then, Guo Yong’s phone suddenly rang.
Guo Yong looked at the caller ID—it was from the hospital—and hastily answered, walking to a corner of the conference room, away from Zhang Yang, so he could hear clearly what was being said.
“What!”
After only a few sentences, Guo Yong’s face darkened with furious indignation. He roared into the phone, “How could you let it slide! Hurry up and handle it, I’m coming back right now!”
“What happened?” Zhu Daoqi immediately drew near, asking with concern.
Guo Yong’s expression was grim, but he managed to force a smile. “There was a fire on Daobei Street in Changjing. Only one child was burned, not seriously, but he’s bleeding tears from his eyes and was sent to Jinghe Hospital. Now, the child’s parents cannot be located. No one in the hospital dares to accept this child. I must rush back immediately; if treatment is delayed, no one can bear that responsibility!”
“Ah, I see. Then Old Guo, hurry back!” Upon hearing this, Zhu Daoqi immediately cleared a path, letting Guo Yong go first.
“Director Guo, I’ll go with you!”
Just as Guo Yong stepped toward the door, Zhang Yang’s voice suddenly cut through the noise of the others.
“What!”
The conference room fell silent instantly, everyone staring at Zhang Yang.
Zhang Yang looked at Guo Yong and added, “I have a car; it will be faster that way.”
Guo Yong immediately nodded upon hearing this.
Seeing Guo Yong nod, Zhang Yang quickly said, “We are all doctors; saving lives is the most important thing. Something has happened with Director Guo; if the rest of you are free, you might as well follow along to see.”
No one could argue with that reason. After Zhang Yang left the conference room with Guo Yong, the remaining hospital representatives exchanged glances. Director Li from Union Hospital was the first to speak.
“Let’s go take a look.”
Following this, a large group proceeded toward Jinghe Hospital.
Guo Yong settled into Zhang Yang’s Mercedes-Benz. Zhang Yang drove without restraint due to his worry for the patient, and seeing Zhang Yang’s large Benz only further diminished Guo Yong’s desire to have Zhang Yang intern at his hospital.
As for why Zhang Yang suddenly cared about Guo Yong’s patient, it was because Zhang Yang had overheard the entire phone call Guo Yong had taken earlier.
Zhang Yang had already achieved Great Perfection, reaching the peak of the mid-stage Fourth Level of Internal Strength. Even though the conference room was chaotic at the time, clearly catching the content of Guo Yong’s call was effortlessly within his ability.
Upon hearing about the child injured in the eye due to the fire, Zhang Yang immediately recalled that before his rebirth, Guo Yong resigned as director of Jinghe Hospital precisely because of a misjudgment in this medical case, which resulted in the child going permanently blind.
Therefore, Zhang Yang had to stay with Guo Yong to prevent him from repeating the mistake and causing the child to lose his sight again.
Jinghe Hospital was ordinary, not as opulent and luxuriously decorated as the other private hospitals.
People bustled through the hospital grounds, most dressed plainly. In contrast, Zhang Yang’s large Benz driving in attracted considerable attention.
After getting out of the car, Guo Yong immediately ran toward the operating room, with Zhang Yang closely following.
Upon entering the hospital building, a nurse immediately handed Guo Yong a white coat, and a group of people rushed urgently toward the emergency room.
At this point, the nurse saw Zhang Yang and immediately and disapprovingly urged him, as irrelevant personnel, to leave quickly.
Zhang Yang shook his head helplessly. These were hospital rules, which he certainly understood, but evidently, the nurses at Jinghe Hospital did not know he was also a doctor; they likely mistook him for someone else or perhaps a patient’s family member who had tagged along.
It was only when Guo Yong noticed Zhang Yang being stopped that he quickly introduced him, thus preventing Zhang Yang from being thrown out.
The two entered the emergency ward. On the hospital bed, a child, about eight or nine years old, lay quietly.
Beside the bed stood another doctor.
“Director Wang, what is the patient’s current condition?” Guo Yong couldn't afford any delay and asked directly upon seeing the situation.
The doctor called Director Wang breathed a sigh of relief when he saw Guo Yong arrive and walked over to tell him, “The patient’s burn injuries are generally not a major concern. The main issue now is that he keeps shedding bloody tears intermittently. This is likely an eye condition caused by the fire, and he needs immediate surgery, otherwise, this child’s eyes will certainly not be saved.”
Zhang Yang stood to the side, his brow tightly furrowed.
Guo Yong stepped forward, gently peeled back the child’s eyelid, examined it, then did the same for the other eye. After checking both, he stated calmly, “Director Wang, immediately arrange for surgery!”
“Director Guo!” Director Wang hesitated for a moment and did not move.
Guo Yong grew slightly irritated and chided, “Director Wang, what are you waiting for!”
“Director Guo, this child should have been sent to Changjing Fourth Hospital. Now that his parents and relatives are absent, no one can sign the surgical consent form. Doing so would be against regulations!” Director Wang explained to Guo Yong. He understood the child’s condition; otherwise, he wouldn't have waited for Guo Yong to return before postponing the surgery for so long.
“You know the child’s condition right now; the surgery cannot be delayed. If it drags on, his eyes will surely be beyond saving!” Guo Yong now resembled a raging lion.
“But without a family member signing the consent form, we cannot perform the surgery. If any accident occurs during the operation, none of us can bear that responsibility—in severe cases, it could even lead to criminal liability!” Director Wang countered sharply; he naturally disagreed with proceeding with surgery rashly!
“Then what should we do? Just stand by and watch this child go blind?” Guo Yong clenched his fists, clearly wrestling with his conscience.
“Director Guo, this child doesn’t even properly fall under our hospital's jurisdiction. We have handled the burns; even if we don't perform the surgery, we can account for our actions,” Director Wang continued to persuade.
Guo Yong’s eyes reddened, and he fell silent for half a beat before gritting his teeth, veins bulging on the backs of his hands.
“Take him to the operating room for surgery. I will do it myself!”
“Director Guo!” Director Wang was greatly shocked, realizing that Director Guo was ultimately determined to proceed unilaterally.
Zhang Yang observed all of this.
Now Zhang Yang understood the truth behind Guo Yong’s medical misjudgment back then: the child bleeding tears was not caused by the fire. This fact, due to Guo Yong’s extreme haste and preconceived notions, led him to mistakenly believe the child’s eyes were pooling blood due to the fire.
That was why he insisted on surgery against all opposition, only to discover the true cause after the operation—but it was too late; the child’s eyes could not be saved in the end.
“Director Guo, perhaps you should let me take a look?” Zhang Yang took a step forward and said to Guo Yong.
“You?” Guo Yong glanced at Zhang Yang. Currently, he was in no mood for small talk and directly said, “This child’s eye condition is extremely critical right now. Surgery must be done immediately, or these eyes might be lost. He is not even ten years old; if he goes blind, what will his future be like!”
These words made Zhang Yang regard Guo Yong with profound respect. Although the eventual outcome of the past events resulted in Guo Yong harming the child, it had to be admitted that from the very beginning, Guo Yong was entirely focused on saving the child. (To be continued)
