Kuang Feifan paused his movement, not immediately turning around. The posture struck Feng Tian as slightly affected, almost making him laugh aloud, yet Ji Ping seemed utterly oblivious to their reactions. Although his gaze was fixed on the doorway, his eyes didn't seem to truly focus on Kuang Feifan.
After a moment of thoughtful silence, Ji Ping spoke again, "There’s something I’ve never quite understood. Can you two explain it?"
Kuang Feifan slowly pivoted, asking, "What is it?"
Ji Ping narrowed his eyes. "Tell me, did you two really escape the 'Ghost Domain' alive?"
Kuang Feifan froze for a beat, realizing the 'Ghost Domain' Ji Ping mentioned was precisely the 'Forgotten Corner' Feng Tian had spoken of. He shrugged, the corner of his mouth lifting slightly. "That's right. Not only did we escape alive, but we arrived at the Daoist temple at the critical moment, successfully thwarting your little plan."
Ji Ping let out a derisive 'harrumph' through his nose, sounding unconvinced, yet Kuang Feifan caught a fleeting shadow of astonishment in his eyes.
"Don't believe me?" Kuang Feifan pressed.
In truth, the issue of belief was moot by this point; Kuang Feifan and Feng Tian were standing, breathing, within Ji Ping’s hospital room.
But Kuang Feifan immediately followed up, "Still find it incredible?" The tone dripped with sarcasm.
After a long stretch of silence, Ji Ping sighed with a sudden note of disappointment. "I just don't quite grasp how you could have possibly gotten out."
Kuang Feifan frowned, glancing quizzically toward Feng Tian. He truly couldn't fathom why Ji Ping was so fixated on this specific detail.
Suddenly, Feng Tian’s eyes lit up, and he asked with a dawning realization, "Did you go in there yourself?"
Of course, the question was directed at Ji Ping.
For a fleeting moment, both Kuang Feifan and Feng Tian saw an intensely complex expression cross Ji Ping’s face—a mixture of stark terror, bitter unwillingness, and outright hatred.
"Tell me how you managed to walk away unscathed, and I'll tell you my story," Ji Ping ground out through clenched teeth.
Kuang Feifan felt a rush of surprise and elation inwardly, but outwardly, he maintained a facade of composure. For an instant, he thought they might have failed, yet success had arrived surprisingly easily.
Generally speaking, everything had been pre-arranged by Kuang Feifan and Feng Tian before they arrived. From the moment they stepped into the room, everything Kuang Feifan said and did followed a sequence meticulously planned in his mind; Feng Tian was simply there to cooperate as much as possible.
On the way over, they had agreed that while Kuang Feifan hadn't conducted actual interrogations, he at least had some knowledge in that area. According to Feng Tian’s assessment, Kuang Feifan would steer the questioning, no matter what.
Kuang Feifan had no foolproof strategy, so he resolved to take things one step at a time. The questions Feng Tian proposed after entering were also pre-discussed, primarily to gauge Ji Ping's reaction.
Kuang Feifan had been covertly watching Ji Ping the entire time, relieved that Ji Ping indeed showed a flicker of curiosity after Feng Tian’s questions.
Kuang Feifan believed that as long as curiosity remained, handling the situation would be manageable. From that point on, every word and action was centered on inciting Ji Ping’s curiosity while simultaneously dismissing the threat of Ji Ping’s actions the previous night and continuously pressing the issue.
Indeed, spurred by Kuang Feifan's provocations, Ji Ping finally spoke. The only unexpected turn was Ji Ping’s intense interest in how they managed to emerge unscathed from the 'Forgotten Corner.'
Kuang Feifan nodded, returning to his seat.
The truth was, just as Kuang Feifan had implied earlier, without Feng Tian, they might not have escaped that 'Corner' alive.
From the moment they entered that 'Corner,' Feng Tian's various maneuvers had pulled them back from danger time and again, not to mention his uncanny artifact-finding skills.
As Kuang Feifan continued his praise, Feng Tian, unusually, offered a few humble remarks, noting that if Kuang Feifan hadn't consistently been lucky enough to find the correct counter to the dangers, he couldn't have succeeded alone.
That was undeniable, especially the time Kuang Feifan inadvertently discovered the paper figures' weakness and managed to save Feng Tian from the jaws of one.
Once they understood the eyes were their weakness, the two fought desperately to carve a bloody path through the swarm of paper figures. Relying on Feng Tian's artifact-finding technique, they finally located the beat-up, second-hand 'QQ' in the suffocating darkness.
Though, it might have been an illusion, the car had looked ready to fall apart even when they first entered this hellish place; now, under Kuang Feifan's gaze, it appeared even more dilapidated, as if a single touch would scatter it into individual components.
At that moment, from all directions of the encroaching darkness, spectral paper figures began to float out, lunging toward Kuang Feifan and Feng Tian. Though the paper figures moved, they seemed programmed only for attack, especially against the living.
Watching the shadows close in, Kuang Feifan shouted urgently, his face flushed, "Hurry up! We found the car!"
Feng Tian glanced around, a chill running down his spine. It wasn't just the approaching paper figures; the shadows in the dark seemed to conceal countless more lurking figures. Truly, the saying that even a hero succumbs to overwhelming numbers held weight. Even knowing the paper figures' weakness, being surrounded by so many meant their shredding was only a matter of time.
Kuang Feifan, seeing Feng Tian's head whipping back and forth, yelled in exasperation, "What are you looking at? Get a move on..."
Feng Tian dared not argue and had no time to spare. He bolted toward his little car, yanked open the passenger door, simultaneously pulling open the glove compartment while shouting, "Hold them off! Cover me..."
Kuang Feifan rolled his eyes but reluctantly adopted a defensive stance. He was both annoyed and anxious because Feng Tian had just mentioned blowing up the car, yet now he was frantically rummaging through the compartment. "What the hell are you looking for? We're about to die; nothing valuable matters then!"
Feng Tian snatched a bundle from the compartment, shook it out—it was a long piece of cloth—and ignored Kuang Feifan. He spun around and dashed toward the back of the car, twisting off the fuel tank cap in passing and clumsily shoving the cloth into the opening.
Just then, Kuang Feifan noticed the first paper figures were almost upon them. He slowly retreated toward the car, positioning himself near Feng Tian. This was not the time for brute-force confrontation; protecting Feng Tian was paramount.
Feng Tian, having jammed the cloth into place, looked up and realized that in this brief interval, Kuang Feifan had already taken down two of the closest paper figures with well-placed strikes and kicks.
Just as he did, Feng Tian felt movement behind him. Before he could turn, Kuang Feifan had already leaped forward, interposing himself behind Feng Tian, landing a direct blow squarely in a paper figure's eye.
"Faster!" he commanded without looking back.
Feng Tian frantically patted his own body, mumbling, "Where's the lighter?"
"Damn it!"
Kuang Feifan felt an overwhelming urge to turn back and smack Feng Tian upside down.
"Quick, found it!" Feng Tian finally managed to pull a lighter from his pocket. Just as he was about to ignite it, he suddenly yelled out again, "Wait, no..."
Feng Tian’s unpredictable outbursts shocked and angered Kuang Feifan, who cursed, "Can't you just hurry the hell up..."
Saying this, he punched another figure down, but his arm was raked by a slash from the paper figure just before it disintegrated, leaving a gash.
Feng Tian gritted his teeth. "I was just suddenly thinking about both our safety... Hurry, cover me while I get to the trunk..."
With that, he lunged toward the rear of the car.
Kuang Feifan had no choice but to fight and retreat simultaneously, trying his best to keep the paper figures from reaching them.
Feng Tian yanked the trunk lid open with force. Kuang Feifan glanced in and saw Feng Tian pulling out a black, sticky-looking object, hearing him shout, "Quick, grab a corner! When I light this, we wrap ourselves up!"
