In the darkness, Kuang Feifan only felt that his eyes were wide open. He hoped he was mistaken, but gradually, the outlines became clearer. In the absolute darkness, these shapes of severed limbs took on a grey hue, making them surprisingly easy to see.
He could even make out a pair of hands not far away, palms facing forward, fingers together—just hands, severed cleanly at the wrist. Nearby were other pieces: hands still attached to forearms, thighs, calves, feet, and several incomplete heads.
By the rope around his waist, he sensed the position of those hands was near Feng Tian's face; meaning, those hands were directly covering Feng Tian’s eyes. Could this be why Feng Tian couldn't see?
Not only that, he noticed that he too was surrounded by severed limbs, but unlike those near Feng Tian, these seemed to flinch and hesitate, appearing to want to approach but daring not to. The limbs near Feng Tian were constantly attempting to tug at his arms and legs.
Kuang Feifan involuntarily flexed his wrist. Could the prayer beads wrapped around it have something to do with this?
After a brief thought, he reached out, pressed the pressure button on the gas canister, and simultaneously struck his lighter.
Indeed, under the scorching orange-yellow flame, he saw Feng Tian’s still somewhat bewildered expression, and the flashlight held aloft but unlit. However, he could no longer see the severed limbs floating in mid-air or resting on the ground.
It seemed these dismembered parts only manifested in the absence of light. Kuang Feifan, taking advantage of the bright flame, located the flashlight in Feng Tian's hand, leaned over, forcefully snatched it away, and pressed the switch.
The stark, almost bluish-white beam illuminated the space around the two men. Kuang Feifan suddenly realized that in just that short interval, Feng Tian had become like a wax figure—resembling a person, yet utterly devoid of vitality. Not only was the expression on his face unchanging, but even the posture of holding the flashlight remained fixed.
Startled, Kuang Feifan had a thought, clicked off the flashlight, and sure enough, various severed limbs swarmed around Feng Tian’s body. Although he didn't know why, it was clear these things were what had rendered Feng Tian statuesque.
Kuang Feifan instinctively reached out for an arm, but it seemed that limb feared his approach. Before he could get close, the arm flickered and swiftly darted several meters away.
He noticed that because he had moved closer to Feng Tian, many of the numerous severed limbs had retreated into the distance as if avoiding a predator. A thought sparked in his mind, and he raised his hand, aiming for the severed hands covering Feng Tian’s eyes.
In his haste in the darkness, he couldn't be certain if he had grabbed the right pair of hands, but he felt his fingers brush against skin that was cold as ice. He instinctively tightened his grip.
“Ah oh… slow down, you’ll make me blind,” came Feng Tian’s cry by his ear.
Kuang Feifan hastily turned the flashlight back on. If he hadn't been careful, his thumb might indeed have grazed Feng Tian’s eyeball. As the light flared, Feng Tian seemed to regain his senses, raising a hand to push away the one Kuang Feifan still held near his face. Shielding his eyes with one hand, he rubbed the other against his cheek and asked, “Did something happen to me?”
Kuang Feifan looked at him strangely, then recounted the sight of countless severed limbs surrounding him in the dark. Seeing that Feng Tian seemed to remember nothing, Kuang Feifan brought up the doppelgängers they had seen before, even mentioning that the figure looking exactly like Feng Tian had raised a flashlight and swung it at him.
Feng Tian frowned, finding it hard to believe he’d experienced temporary memory loss. Kuang Feifan, feeling helpless, simply switched off the flashlight again, urging him in the darkness to look closely at their surroundings.
After a long pause, while standing in the dark, Feng Tian muttered two words: “Holy… crap…”
Feng Tian had been in this line of work for over twenty years, yet he had never encountered so many fragmented souls as he had today. Though he couldn't recall what had just happened to him, based on Kuang Feifan’s description, he had apparently been subjected to a ‘ghost’s deception.’ Whether the amnesia was caused by the massive number of fragmented souls remained speculation, though a possibility.
However, these fragmented souls truly feared the prayer beads on Kuang Feifan’s hand. Having no other choice, Feng Tian leaned back against Kuang Feifan, whispering softly, “If we manage to get out, it’s best we never mention what happened here to anyone, especially not in this state.”
Kuang Feifan rolled his eyes. “Relax, I won’t let anyone know we were back-to-back.”
Feng Tian nodded. “Good. I was planning to retire soon, find a girl, date, and get married. If this were mistakenly spread around that I was involved with you… well, that would be…”
Kuang Feifan bit out the words, interrupting him fiercely, “Shut up. In short, this stays buried with us.”
And so, the two stood back-to-back, Kuang Feifan in front, intermittently turning the flashlight on and off, reaching out to ward off the various limbs that approached. Feng Tian stood braced behind him, constantly directing the way forward and adjusting their path. They shortened the length of the rope tied to their waists to prevent losing contact in case of a sudden surge.
After walking for an unknown length of time, Kuang Feifan suddenly asked, “Is there actually any chance we can get out?”
Feng Tian paused. “What, thinking of giving up?”
Kuang Feifan didn't reply, merely continuing to move forward stubbornly.
Feng Tian mused for a moment, then suddenly stated, “Actually, I was just wondering if I misjudged things earlier.”
Kuang Feifan was silent for a long moment before saying, “Are you saying that to comfort me, or do you really have an idea?”
Feng Tian snorted through his nose. “You’re a grown man; I can’t be bothered to comfort you. Don’t forget, I’m in this with you, and I haven’t planned on dying yet.”
“Uh…” Kuang Feifan opened his mouth but found no suitable words. He just smacked his lips and asked, “Alright, what have you thought of now?”
Feng Tian looked thoughtful. “It just popped into my head, I can’t even recall where I read it. There’s a place rumored to exist outside the Yellow Springs Road, officially named ‘The Forgotten Corner.’ It means everything that doesn’t belong in either the Yin or Yang realms ends up in this ‘Corner.’ Seeing so many severed limbs just now made me suddenly recall this legend.”
“‘The Forgotten Corner’?” Kuang Feifan repeated involuntarily.
Feng Tian swallowed hard and continued, “Yes. Look, those paper effigies that appeared before are usually used in funerals. And those hungry ghosts—what if they weren’t hungry ghosts? I mean, I’ve never seen what a hungry ghost looks like, so I just guessed based on their actions, but what if they weren’t? What if they were just common rotting corpses? And those fragmented souls, if they are just formed from severed limbs—all of these things can’t enter the Underworld, nor can they linger in the living world indefinitely. The final destination, it seems, can only be this supposed ‘Forgotten Corner.’”
Kuang Feifan asked curiously, “What made you think of that?”
Feng Tian shrugged. “Us, man. You got hurt, you bled, and only then did I realize—we are living, breathing people who entered this space. Generally, flesh-and-blood living beings cannot enter the Underworld, and the term ‘Ghost Domain’ targets souls. But we were dragged into this space with our physical bodies. This means this space allows living people to enter, and the only place capable of admitting people in our form, it seems, would be that legendary ‘Corner.’”
Kuang Feifan responded with a flat “Oh,” showing little interest, only asking, “So, in this legend, if one enters, is there a way out?”
Feng Tian hesitated for a moment. “There is one way, but the danger level is quite high.”
Kuang Feifan casually asked, “What way?”
“Destroy this ‘Corner,’” Feng Tian paused, then slowly uttered the sentence.
