The people at the station treated them well; after taking their statements, they were given a room to rest.
The four men Zhang Yang hit hadn't returned yet, so they couldn't leave now. The police station received a report of an assault, and Zhang Yang was the assailant.
Now, Zhang Yang had also accused them of attempted rape; they were simultaneously defendants and plaintiffs, making it even more impossible for them to leave.
"Nannan!"
"Xiaodai!"
In the courtyard of the police station, Hu Xin and Gu Cheng’s shouts suddenly rang out, their voices laced with urgency.
Zhang Yang immediately stood up, went out, and brought the two in.
The two of them knew yesterday that Zhang Yang was back, and they also knew that Nannan and Xiaodai couldn't get leave, so Zhang Yang and Mi Xue would come to see them.
The two had planned to finish their work for the day and then come over to check in. They could wait for Nannan and Xiaodai to clock out, and then they could all go grab a late-night snack; after all, good friends needed to reunite after being apart for so long.
Their work hadn't been too busy today, so they finished early and drove straight to the restaurant.
They didn't see the two girls at the restaurant, but instead learned that they had been taken to the police station. After a careful inquiry, they found out the girls had even been assaulted, which immediately set off the fiery-tempered Hu Xin.
Fortunately, Gu Cheng was with him. He knew that getting agitated at the restaurant wouldn't help, so he hurriedly pulled Hu Xin along to the police station. A month of deliveries had made them intimately familiar with many streets in Changjing.
Gu Cheng had even joked with Hu Xin that even if they stopped driving trucks, they could easily become taxi drivers because they knew so many places so well.
Gu Cheng knew where the police station was. After parking the car, the two rushed in, shouting in the courtyard before finally spotting Zhang Yang emerging.
"Where is that bastard? I’m going to tear him apart!"
Seeing the marks on Xiaodai's face, Hu Xin’s eyes instantly turned red. Baring his teeth, he clenched his fists and spat out the words fiercely.
Xiaodai’s injuries were on her body, but his pain was in his heart. No one doubted that if that Manager Liang were truly present, he would receive another beating. Hu Xin was currently acting like a madman.
"Hu Xin, stop shouting! Zhang Yang already beat him up. He knocked out his teeth!"
Xiaodai quickly interjected, mentioning how Zhang Yang had avenged them, for which she was very grateful.
At that time, everyone at the restaurant had sided with them; only their manager had stopped them, preventing them from suffering further harm. That manager could only do so much; she was a slight woman herself.
As for the others, even the security guards who usually joked around with them didn't offer a single word of inquiry.
The situation, to be honest, had made them feel incredibly disheartened, wronged, and sad when Zhang Yang suddenly appeared and severely taught those four men a lesson. When Zhang Yang was hitting them, they felt an immense sense of satisfaction.
Especially when they saw Manager Liang’s teeth knocked out, Xiaodai wished she could step forward and deliver a few kicks herself.
"That’s not enough! Don't let me see him again, or I’ll beat him every time I see him!"
Hu Xin’s fists were clenched tight. He regretted not arriving earlier that day; if he had come sooner, Xiaodai wouldn't have had to endure this suffering.
Thinking this, the nearly six-foot-tall man felt tears welling up in his eyes, almost spilling over.
Gu Cheng also clenched his fists. He didn't say a word, but his expression clearly showed his resolve.
It was a good thing those four had gone to the hospital; if they were here now, they would likely be subjected to another beating from the enraged Hu Xin and Gu Cheng, even if this was a police station.
"Who is in charge here? Hurry up and come out!"
In the police station courtyard, someone else was shouting. The sky had already darkened, yet the station seemed unusually lively.
Huang Ze was there, flipping through the testimonies of the restaurant staff. The restaurant employees' accounts clearly differed from what Nannan and Xiaodai had said.
This gave Huang Ze a slight sense of relief. With these testimonies, the charge of attempted rape would not stick; at least he would have something to explain to District Chief Liang.
As for Zhang Yang's side, he would have to figure something else out.
Just as he finished reading these, he heard the shouting outside, and the noise hadn't stopped.
"Director Huang, District Chief Liang is here. He specifically asked to see you!"
A police officer rushed into his office, speaking anxiously. The man shouting outside was District Chief Liang's driver. Huang Ze hadn't expected this matter to draw the attention of the District Chief himself.
"Why is he here? Isn't this just stirring up trouble!"
Huang Ze shook his head helplessly, but he still walked out. He dared not show any disrespect to a major figure like District Chief Liang; the Chief's rank was//Fastest text update at Book Fan Tower "District Chief Liang, hello. I am Deputy Director Huang Ze. You can just call me Little Huang!"
There were several people standing in the courtyard. The leader was a man in his fifties, accompanied by a young man in his twenties—District Chief Liang's driver.
The police station wasn't large, and the room where Zhang Yang and the others were staying was nearby. They had noticed the commotion in the courtyard. Hu Xin and Gu Cheng had even walked up to the window to watch.
Nannan looked somewhat flustered and couldn't help grabbing Mi Xue's arm.
Even Xiaodai's expression was no longer as composed.
They already knew that Manager Liang was District Chief Liang’s younger brother. Knowing this was one thing, but they had never seen the District Chief in person.
Now that the District Chief was here, standing right there, and Director Huang was showing him such great deference, a sense of dread instinctively washed over them.
Since ancient times, the saying "the common people should not fight with officials" has existed. Nannan came from a rural background; she was just an ordinary citizen. The highest official she had ever seen was the town mayor, and that was just during an inspection when she was a child.
A District Chief, in her estimation, was far more significant than a town mayor.
Xiaodai was slightly better off, but only marginally so. Her family was ordinary, and before District Chief Liang arrived, they had Zhang Yang supporting them. With the District Chief's arrival, fear immediately took hold.
"Hu Xin, Gu Cheng, you two stay here. I'll go out and see!"
Zhang Yang said softly. He hadn't paid much attention to any District Chief, but he hadn't expected this official to arrive so quickly.
"I'm going too!"
Mi Xue ran to Zhang Yang’s side. She reasoned that her father was, after all, a Deputy County Magistrate, which was the same rank as a Deputy District Chief.
However, she didn't know the difference in status between a Deputy County Magistrate of an ordinary county and a Deputy District Chief of a provincial capital city.
Mi Xue walked out with Zhang Yang. In the courtyard, Huang Ze stood there with a distressed expression, enduring a lecture. The Director was off duty; Huang Ze had called to report earlier, but the Director was shrewd enough to realize the situation was troublesome and dumped everything onto him.
He had even spoken nicely, expressing faith in Huang Ze’s capabilities. Now, Huang Ze had to bear the brunt of it all.
The one lecturing him wasn't District Chief Liang, but the District Chief's driver. District Chief Liang stood there, perpetually arrogant.
"Quick, contact the people at the hospital and call them back! Also, immediately arrest those several assailants!"
The driver scolded for a while, satisfying himself, before issuing the order to Huang Ze.
Huang Ze felt terribly uncomfortable. This person was merely a driver, without any official rank—a chauffeur, essentially.
Yet, this person had berated him, a Deputy Director, for quite some time, and he dared not retort. This was truly a sorrowful state of affairs, and anger brewed in his heart.
But this anger had to remain hidden; he couldn't voice it. Even the gatekeeper of a Prime Minister holds a high rank; this driver had no rank at all, but he represented District Chief Liang, especially since the Chief was standing right in front of him.
"Director Huang, what's going on?"
Zhang Yang walked over at this moment. Seeing Zhang Yang, Huang Ze's headache immediately intensified. The assailant was Zhang Yang; just now, the driver was urging him to make arrests, and yet Zhang Yang had walked out on his own.
Only Zhang Yang, Mi Xue, and Long Feng emerged.
Long Feng had followed Zhang Yang the entire time without saying a word.
"Mr. Zhang, it's nothing, nothing. You should go back first!"
Huang Ze frantically signaled Zhang Yang. He couldn't afford to offend District Chief Liang, but he also didn't dare arrest Zhang Yang, given that Zhang Yang had the backing of the City Criminal Police Captain.
Huang Ze had always believed Captain Liu had a deep relationship with Zhang Yang; otherwise, the handling of the previous incident—seriously punishing those gangsters and holding Hu Pianzi accountable—wouldn't have happened that way.
"No need. The people you sent to the hospital should be returning by now. Those few only suffered minor mouth injuries; they’ll be fine. Tell them to come back, and don't forget they are criminal suspects!"
Zhang Yang shook his head slightly, paying no mind to Huang Ze’s signals.
As soon as his words fell, the driver who had just been berating Huang Ze, along with District Chief Liang, both turned their heads. A sharp glint appeared in District Chief Liang's eyes.
"Director Huang, who is this person?"
The driver asked directly, his tone exceptionally rude. He saw no need to be polite to a police station director; today, he represented the District Chief.
"Th-This is Mr. Zhang!"
Huang Ze’s expression turned bitter. He was secretly annoyed that a mere driver was speaking to him so imperiously, which certainly cost him face.
"I asked you what he does!"
The driver glared again, acting even more pompous than the District Chief. Since the Chief was right there, he knew nobody would dare ignore his words.
He was, in effect, representing the District Chief now.
"He, he is the complainant, the one who reported Manager Liang for attempted rape, and also the one who hit Manager Liang earlier!"
Huang Ze gritted his teeth and just blurted it out. Since they were both major players, he, a minor official, couldn't afford to offend either. He might as well let the big shots fight it out.
He had done what he was supposed to do; he had even tried to signal Zhang Yang. He was now completely out of options.
However, he didn't mention Zhang Yang's background. This was due to a selfish thought: the driver was too arrogant and detestable. If Zhang Yang could teach him a lesson, that would be a good thing.
At this moment, Huang Ze’s allegiance had subtly begun to lean toward Zhang Yang.
"You hit Manager Liang? I'll slap you to death!"
The driver glared at Zhang Yang and did something unexpected: he actually ran toward Zhang Yang, raising his palm to strike down.
Before he could even reach Zhang Yang, the entire man was sent flying. Long Feng, who had been following behind Zhang Yang, had positioned himself in front of Zhang Yang, kicking the driver away.
