Zhang Yang had no idea what these people were thinking; if he had, he would have laughed until he cried. His heart wasn't that small. Besides, their suspicion of him yesterday was just a sign of professional responsibility. If a stranger walked into his office, he'd definitely question it—it was perfectly normal.
The morning’s work was light. Zhang Yang merely circled a few offices. Every other intern had a supervising physician assigned, but he didn't, nor did any doctor dare to take him on.
As soon as noon hit, Zhang Yang drove home alone.
At home, Mi Xue was sitting with a deep frown etched on her face, surrounded by newspapers scattered on the table before her.
The girl had spent the entire morning job hunting, her spirits initially high. Sadly, no matter how beautifully the advertisements described the positions, every place she went turned out to be either an insurance company or a tiny firm that exaggerated everything just to reel in applicants.
"Zhang Yang, finding a job is so hard!"
Mi Xue pursed her lips. Before she started looking, she hadn't felt much, but now that she was actively searching, she understood that some things truly weren't as simple as she had imagined.
"It’s okay, take your time. You'll find something eventually!"
Zhang Yang smiled faintly and handed Mi Xue the brand-new phone he had just bought. Like his own, it was a Nokia; there weren't many good new models out now, so this was considered quite small.
Mi Xue wasn't surprised by the phone; Zhang Yang had already told her he would buy her one.
She didn't really care about it, but having a phone would certainly be more convenient now that she was looking for work.
Before Zhang Yang even left for the hospital that afternoon, Mi Xue had already rushed out to continue her search. She was stubborn; once she set her mind to something, she never looked back.
After Mi Xue left, Zhang Yang drove to the hospital for his afternoon shift. Everything was routine, yet wherever he went, people kept sneaking glances at him.
By the afternoon, he finally understood why—it was his status causing the trouble. It was hard for an intern like him not to attract attention.
Once he understood, he became indifferent. Let them look; he only worked one day a week anyway.
Zhang Yang’s afternoon wasn't as relaxed as his morning. He wasn't seeing patients, but Wang Guohai made him round through the wards. With a doctor of Zhang Yang's caliber present, it was a waste not to utilize his skills.
After checking rooms all afternoon, Zhang Yang offered sound advice on numerous conditions.
This earned him the deep admiration of the other interns accompanying them. Wang Guohai’s eyes widened; if he hadn't known Zhang Yang possessed equally high skill in other areas, he might have suspected Zhang Yang specialized in Gynecology.
Some of the suggestions even impressed Wang Guohai himself.
This realization made him even more grateful that he had managed to pull Zhang Yang into his department first, while simultaneously feeling a pang of regret, knowing he couldn't keep Zhang Yang for long; the young man would be transferred eventually.
A talent like that—the Director wouldn't keep him in Obstetrics and Gynecology forever.
Never mind the others; even Wang Guohai now felt Zhang Yang was being underutilized in their department.
"Dr. Zhang, your car is amazing! How much did you pay for it?"
When the shift ended that afternoon, Liu Cheng and the other three interns found Zhang Yang. They hadn't forgotten their promise to treat him to dinner tonight. Putting aside clearing up the misunderstanding, building a good rapport with Zhang Yang would be hugely beneficial for their futures.
Once they were in the car, Liu Cheng asked Zhang Yang with a hint of envy.
"I borrowed it from a friend. I have to return it in a few days!"
Zhang Yang smiled slightly. It really wasn't his car. Su Zhantao, seeing that Zhang Yang was temporarily without one, had reluctantly lent him his own ride; after all, Young Master Su had plenty of cars.
"Oh, it’s borrowed!"
Liu Cheng nodded. Zhang Yang was already impressive enough, putting considerable pressure on them; if he were also wealthy, they wouldn't stand a chance. Hearing Zhang Yang say it was borrowed, they felt a little relieved.
The girls in the back remained silent. Even if the car was borrowed, Zhang Yang was still far more attractive than the others. The differential treatment he received at the hospital alone was enough proof. It was a pity such a person already had a girlfriend; otherwise, someone surely would have made a move.
The place Liu Cheng and the others chose for dinner was the street food stalls at Wuxia Road Plaza—the same spot where Zhang Yang and Mi Xue had run into Hu Tao and Fan Size fighting someone else last time.
As interns, Liu Cheng and his group didn't have much money; they felt too embarrassed to go to a run-down place, but they couldn't afford a nice restaurant, so this market square was the compromise. Compared to the fancier establishments, this place offered good value.
After dropping them off, Zhang Yang drove away first; he needed to pick up Mi Xue. Seeing how considerate Zhang Yang was toward his girlfriend, the girls who came along felt quite envious.
Mi Xue was already waiting at the entrance of the residential complex; Zhang Yang had called her before arriving. Having a phone made things much more convenient than before.
"Zhang Yang, I found a job!"
As soon as she got into the car, Mi Xue said to Zhang Yang with a bright smile. She seemed genuinely happy and excited.
"You found one? Why didn’t you tell me on the phone just now?"
Zhang Yang turned his head in surprise. He had expected Mi Xue to take several days to find a job, or perhaps not find one at all.
Mi Xue giggled. "I wanted to tell you when I saw you—a surprise for you!"
"What kind of place is it?" Zhang Yang asked, driving and smiling.
Mi Xue smiled softly and murmured, "Hongfa Supermarket. I’ll start as a sales associate. They said if I do well, I can continue part-time when school starts!"
Mi Xue was very satisfied with this job; the key was that she could work during the summer and continue when school resumed. She could support herself in the future without relying on her family or Zhang Yang.
A flicker of astonishment crossed Zhang Yang’s face. He hadn't expected Mi Xue to find a job as a sales associate; he had assumed she wanted an office-based position. The job listings she had been looking at earlier were all of that type, which is why the insurance company, recruiting for management trainees, had caught her eye.
It was not easy for Mi Xue to adjust her mindset so quickly and agree to be a sales associate. In this era, many university students who hadn't graduated viewed sales associates as a rather ‘lowly’ job.
"Not bad. Hongfa Supermarket. That's a very large chain. Doesn't that belong to the Xie family?"
Zhang Yang kept driving, but his brow suddenly twitched. He had known about Hongfa Supermarket for a long time; in his memory of the 'old' Zhang Yang, he had even shopped there before. This supermarket was indeed owned by the Xie family. Xie Hui had mentioned to him previously that the nationwide chain of Hongfa Hypermarkets was their business; Xie Hui mainly managed affairs across Jiangdong Province while also looking after their family patriarch.
"Yes. But please, don't tell Xie Hui. I don't want them to give me special treatment!"
Mi Xue nodded. At first, she had definitely wanted an office job, and some small companies were willing to hire her, but as soon as she mentioned needing to attend school, most backed out. Even those who agreed subtly implied that some other 'payment' would be required. Worse, during a direct interview at one company today, a boss in his forties bluntly asked how much she expected per month and if she was looking to be 'kept.' She was so angry she nearly smashed his head.
It was then she understood how difficult job hunting was, especially for girls. No wonder Nannan and Xiaodai preferred working as waitresses in restaurants over office jobs. Once she realized this, Mi Xue dropped her airs and looked for ordinary work, coincidentally finding the supermarket hiring sales associates, so she applied. Mi Xue was pretty, tall, and had good skin, so the supermarket hired her. She could start tomorrow.
Finding a job in just one day made Mi Xue very happy, and she deliberately waited until she saw Zhang Yang to tell him.
"Alright, I won't say anything. But if he recognizes you himself, don't blame me!"
Zhang Yang chuckled lightly. Mi Xue working for Xie Hui's company was indeed a small surprise. But this was probably better; he wouldn't have felt comfortable sending her to those sketchy small places. He knew the Xie family's background well; they had established industrial roots on the mainland long ago and had an excellent reputation.
"Don't worry, I’ll just be a regular sales associate; I won't have any chance to meet him!"
Mi Xue smiled proudly, her face beaming, seemingly full of bright anticipation for her future job. Seeing her expression, Zhang Yang shook his head gently; it was best not to say anything else right now, lest he dampen her enthusiasm.
Soon, the two arrived at the night market stalls next to the plaza. After parking, Zhang Yang took Mi Xue's hand and walked toward the crowd. It wasn't dark yet, but the night market was already quite busy. It would get much more crowded later, remaining lively until midnight.
From a distance, Zhang Yang spotted Liu Cheng and the others. However, the group was standing, and beside them were three other men. Liu Cheng seemed to be arguing heatedly with one of them.
Seeing this scene, Zhang Yang’s heart gave a sudden lurch. From afar, it looked exactly like those three men were causing trouble for them, with Liu Cheng appearing agitated while arguing back.
He had been to this location twice before, and both times resulted in a fight—once for himself, once for others. This was his third visit; surely it couldn't be another brawl? If so, this place was definitely his jinx, and he shouldn't come back.
"Dr. Zhang, you're back!"
The three female interns spotted Zhang Yang first. The one named Wang Ying quickly waved at him. The eyes of the three girls simultaneously brightened as they noticed Mi Xue. Even they, as women, had to admit Mi Xue was beautiful—her looks, figure, and complexion surpassed theirs by far, especially since Mi Xue had dressed up specifically for this dinner with Zhang Yang's colleagues. She looked even more captivating. Although the three girls weren't bad looking—among the better-looking interns—even the prettiest among them, Wang Ying, felt vastly inferior to Mi Xue.
"Dr. Zhang, you've arrived! Mi—Mi Xue!"
Liu Cheng also turned around. He was mid-sentence when he saw Mi Xue, his face etched with profound shock. Liu Cheng was also a student at Changjing University, two years ahead of Zhang Yang. But he had heard of Mi Xue, the beauty of the Foreign Languages department, and had even sneaked a peek at her once. That time, he had been utterly captivated by her stunning appearance, even telling his classmates that Mi Xue was the true campus belle, far surpassing the one currently being hyped. Afterward, he had secretly kept an eye on Mi Xue many times and remembered her vividly. He never expected to see her here, and certainly not alongside Zhang Yang.
