Wang Guohai stayed with Zhang Yang until the last needle was inserted before taking him back to the office.

At this moment, Wang Guohai didn't know how to describe his feelings. Zhang Yang was truly remarkable; he had solved a major problem for him upon arrival. It seemed bringing Zhang Yang into the Obstetrics and Gynecology department was one of his wisest decisions.

He was now so reluctant to let Zhang Yang go.

Zhang Yang was indeed a talent, a well-rounded one at that. A talent like this, no matter where he went, would likely be irreplaceable.

Back in the office, Zhang Yang's work arrangement was temporarily settled.

He was Wang Guohai’s deputy, and for now, he would only be responsible for Huang Ju, handling nothing else for the time being.

Zhang Yang only needed to work twice a week, each time for just half a day, focusing solely on one patient. This suited Huang Ju's condition, as she didn't require constant observation.

This arrangement significantly eased his workload.

Zhang Yang had no objections to this schedule; should the hospital require assistance with any insurmountable issues, he would certainly step in.

The consultation and the acupuncture session earlier had consumed considerable time. Checking the wall clock in the office, it was already nearing five in the afternoon.

With some time left before official dismissal, Zhang Yang greeted the office staff and headed straight out.

Wang Guohai wasn't present; he had gone to the Director's office. He needed to personally deliver the good news that one of the two major issues in the department had been resolved, allowing the Director to share in the joy.

With Zhang Yang gone, naturally, no one objected; many were simply marveling.

Many interns had come through their hospital before. Which newcomer hadn't been meek and fearful, acting diligently by cleaning or sitting quietly when there was nothing else to do?

An intern like Zhang Yang, who dared to wander off on his very first day, was virtually unheard of.

But then again, Zhang Yang was entirely different from those interns. None of them had generated so much prior attention before even entering the hospital, nor had any of them solved a huge, pressing problem for the hospital immediately upon arrival.

Zhang Yang was oblivious to these thoughts; he headed toward the operating theater area.

It was almost five o'clock. According to the plan, Nannan’s mother was currently in surgery. Since he was free, it was a good idea to check in; family members were usually quite anxious during an operation.

The operating theater and the office were in the same building, and Zhang Yang soon arrived at the surgical wing.

In the corridor outside the operating rooms, Nannan, Gu Cheng, Hu Xin, Xiao Dai, and Mi Xue were gathered, along with two very robust-looking men—a whole group waiting anxiously on the chairs outside.

Mi Xue and the others had taken leave. As soon as their first class ended, they rushed over because of Nannan’s mother’s surgery, ready to assist if needed.

“Zhang Yang!”

Mi Xue spotted him first. Seeing him dressed in white scrubs, her eyes held a distinct, unusual gleam.

Hu Xin and Gu Cheng also turned to look, their eyes widening. Zhang Yang in hospital whites—it had to be said, he carried the air of a physician quite well.

In fact, it wasn't the first time they had seen Zhang Yang in this attire; students wore them during school experiments. But then, it never felt like this.

“Zhang Yang, you’re here!”

Nannan hurried over, and the two sturdy men followed her, looking at Zhang Yang with curiosity.

These two were an older man and a younger one. The elder looked to be in his fifties, and the younger perhaps in his twenties. Both wore simple clothes and seemed somewhat reserved in front of Zhang Yang.

These two shared a slight resemblance to Nannan.

“Dad, Brother, this is my classmate, Zhang Yang. It’s thanks to him that Mom’s surgery could be scheduled so quickly. Without him, this operation wouldn't have happened!”

Nannan quickly introduced Zhang Yang to the two men beside her. Her address to them caused Zhang Yang no surprise; he had guessed moments ago that they must be Nannan’s relatives.

Her mother undergoing surgery was no small matter; Nannan shouldn't be the only one here.

“St-Student Zhang, thank you, truly, thank you so much!”

Nannan’s father hurried forward, intending to shake Zhang Yang’s hand, but his hand paused halfway and then retracted.

His hands were somewhat dirty. He had arrived at the hospital only shortly before the scheduled surgery and hadn't had time to clean up.

This was mainly because there was a lot of work back home, and they couldn't abandon their chores just because of a medical appointment. He and his son had rushed over only after finishing their tasks; Nannan alone was sufficient until then.

“Uncle, you are too kind. Nannan and I are good classmates and friends; this is the least I could do!”

Zhang Yang chuckled, proactively extending his hand to shake Nannan’s father’s.

Whether in his previous life or the present, Zhang Yang judged people not by wealth or poverty, but by temperament alignment. Nannan was his good friend, and he certainly wouldn't treat her family as outsiders.

Nannan’s father broke into an honest, simple smile, and his elder brother quickly shook Zhang Yang’s hand as well.

Zhang Yang was a doctor at the hospital and had helped arrange his mother’s surgery; in their eyes, he was a benefactor, which accounted for his extreme politeness.

Nannan’s family hailed from the countryside. Her brother had not performed well academically, so he started working early to support Nannan’s education.

Nannan proved worthy, eventually getting into university. While Changjing University wasn't a top-tier national institution, it was one of the more reputable universities in their province. Given the generally average quality of education in rural areas, having one university student was already a significant achievement.

Thus, Nannan became the family's pride. Seeing that she had so many good classmates at school and that they could help in her mother's crisis, her father and brother felt completely reassured.

“Family of Fang Yun!”

The operating room door opened, and a nurse wearing a mask stepped out.

Everyone immediately stood up. Nannan, her father, and her brother rushed forward.

“I am Fang Yun’s daughter. How is my mother?”

Nannan asked urgently, her father and brother also displaying anxiety. Zhang Yang glanced at the time; the surgery should be concluding around now. A nurse emerging at this hour most likely meant the operation was finished, suggesting it went smoothly.

“The surgery was very successful. How many of you are there? We need a few people ready to move the patient to a room shortly!”

The nurse nodded slightly. Zhang Yang’s guess was correct; the procedure had concluded successfully, and the nurse was there to deliver the notification.

“Really? Thank you, thank you all so much!”

Nannan paused briefly, then exclaimed happily. Although it was a minor surgery, it was still an operation, and their hearts had been tense from the start. Now, they could finally relax completely.

“Good, good, we’ll be right there!”

Nannan’s father also spoke with relief. Nannan’s mother would still be affected by the anesthesia after the surgery, requiring several people to move her onto a gurney. With several strong men present, there were plenty of hands to lift her.

Nannan’s father, mother, Hu Xin, Gu Cheng, and Zhang Yang all walked inside. As Zhang Yang entered, the masked nurse glanced at him, a flicker of surprise in her eyes.

“Are you Zhang Yang?”

The young nurse suddenly asked Zhang Yang. He paused slightly, turning back to look at her with some confusion.

“I am Zhang Yang. And you are?”

Her voice sounded completely unfamiliar. He knew very few people at the Third Hospital, and even fewer in Gynecology. He couldn't place this young nurse.

“It really is you! My name is Hu Ye, I’m a nurse here. Last time, when we were preparing a patient for surgery, you stopped us. If it hadn't been for you, that patient would have been in grave danger!”

The young nurse removed her mask, appearing somewhat reserved yet excited.

She was referring to the little girl Zhang Yang had saved immediately after returning from his transmigration. At the time, there were doctors and nurses around the girl, but Zhang Yang had been focused entirely on the patient and hadn't noticed the staff nearby.

Now that he thought about it, the nurse attending the patient back then might have been this very person.

“It’s you! I’m the new intern, also in Obstetrics and Gynecology. We’re colleagues now!”

Zhang Yang smiled kindly. Nurse Hu Ye nodded vigorously, looking even more thrilled.

They had already heard rumors about Zhang Yang joining the hospital. Hu Ye had recounted the story of Zhang Yang's life-saving procedure to her colleagues more than once. His miraculous needling technique was something she deeply admired.

Saving a patient whom even surgery might not have saved, using just a few ordinary needles—many considered it a miracle.

From that day on, Zhang Yang became someone she held in high regard. When she heard he was coming to work at the hospital, she often wondered when she might see him again. Unfortunately, the news spread early, and Zhang Yang was delayed by other matters, never appearing.

This had made her think Zhang Yang wasn't coming after all. But unexpectedly, she met him here, finding out he was not only at their hospital but also in the same department.

“I need to go in first. That’s my classmate’s mother; I’ll go help out!”

Zhang Yang was unaware of the young nurse's profound internal excitement. He offered a cheerful greeting and walked into the operating room.

Inside, Hu Xin and Nannan’s brother were assisting the doctor in moving the patient onto a stretcher. The surgery was successful; after a period of recovery, the patient could be discharged.

With Zhang Yang at the hospital, there was no need to worry about post-operative care; at the very least, the hospital would certainly give them special attention.

Zhang Yang was not a rigid person. If he could use his abilities to help his friends, he absolutely would. In fact, he had done many such things in his previous life; everyone looks after their own.

After half-past five, Zhang Yang’s official shift ended. He reported back to the office, put away his clothes, and then returned to the ward.

This prompted another wave of awe among the staff. Such a free-spirited intern was truly rare—perhaps the only one since the Third Hospital was founded. Whether a second one would ever appear was unknown.

Zhang Yang was oblivious to their discussions, and even if he knew, it wouldn't matter. He had already completed his grueling internship long ago, and he certainly wasn't inclined to repeat that harsh training life.

This was best. What Zhang Yang desired was freedom from constraints, an unfettered existence.
