The scenery at Songshi Park was quite lovely, and most importantly, it was pleasantly cool around noon, making it a favorite spot for many students to relax after lunch.
The genuine refreshment nature provided simply couldn't be matched by an air-conditioned room.
After lunch, quite a few students came to stroll through the park. In the groves surrounding Songshi Lake, pairs of young men and women were visible everywhere; groups like Zhang Yang's, numbering six or seven people, were less common.
After resting briefly here, the group returned to school together.
Before half past one in the afternoon, Zhang Yang and Xiao Bin arrived punctually at the Student Union meeting room.
Mi Xue and the others were at a nearby campus cold drink shop; meetings held by the Student Union rarely lasted long, so they were waiting there for Zhang Yang to head back to class together.
Over a dozen people were already seated in the office. When Zhang Yang and Xiao Bin entered, most people looked up, but only three offered a greeting to Zhang Yang.
These three were considered the neutral faction within the Student Union; their relationship with Zhou Yichen was unremarkable, just as it was with Zhang Yang. Their positions were not significant, and their temperaments were mild, so Zhou Yichen hadn't bothered trying to win them over.
Everyone else either had some connection to Zhou Yichen or were his active supporters.
From this, one could see what a capable schemer Zhou Yichen was; taking complete control of the Student Union in such a short time as Chairman explained why Zhang Yang had been marginalized to the point of having no real power.
After a few minutes of sitting, a few more people entered. Zhou Yichen finally arrived with his lackeys. His expression was still sour, as if he had just finished an outburst.
The morning’s events had affected him deeply. Most critically, he had finally realized that Zhang Yang had set him up. Thinking of the message from the police station, he was incandescent with rage. He had thrown tantrums multiple times that morning, smashing various items, and the lackeys who followed him had suffered collateral damage.
He had used connections to find someone capable to smooth things over at the police station, only to be told later that there was no record of the incident. The look of skepticism in his friend’s eyes almost made him want to crawl into a drain.
Only the students on campus knew about this incident; now, outside rumors were beginning to circulate about his 'glorious deed.'
This fueled his resentment towards Zhang Yang even more.
"Chairman Zhou, you don't look well. Are you ill? Should we perhaps see a doctor? We can postpone this meeting; health is the foundation of everything, something we cannot afford to neglect!"
As soon as Zhou Yichen sat down, Zhang Yang spoke with a cheerful tone, causing many people to look up in surprise. Usually, during meetings, Zhang Yang kept a tight face and had never proactively addressed Zhou Yichen, let alone provoked him. Everyone present recognized the teasing undertone in his words.
Zhou Yichen choked momentarily. The audacity of acting innocent after gaining the upper hand! He desperately wanted to step forward and punch Zhang Yang, provided, of course, that he could win the fight. The current Zhang Yang was not the person he used to be; Zhou Yichen, with his slender arms and legs, wouldn't be a match for even ten or eight of him now.
"No need, I'm fine!"
Taking a deep breath, Zhou Yichen slowly shook his head. Patience—those were the only two words occupying his mind right now.
After sweeping his gaze over everyone’s faces, Zhou Yichen stated calmly, "Let's start the meeting now. Today is mainly to summarize the work before the holiday and plan the tasks for the summer break!"
It had to be admitted, the bastard had a natural talent for leadership. Seated there, his opening statement carried an inherent air of authority.
Unfortunately, this authority meant nothing in Zhang Yang's eyes; it was simply too minor. In his previous life, he had dealt with officials as high-ranking as provincial party secretaries. A good doctor always held a certain advantage when interacting with others.
No matter how powerful a person was, they couldn't guarantee they wouldn't get sick, and at that moment, they would have to rely on a doctor. A truly skilled physician was respected wherever they went; no one could be certain they wouldn't need that doctor one day.
"Xiao Bin, how is the compilation of your materials coming along?"
As soon as he finished speaking, Zhou Yichen directed his attack squarely at Xiao Bin. Dealing with Xiao Bin had been Zhou Yichen's plan even before the May Day holiday; the main purpose of today's meeting was to eradicate all of Zhang Yang's remaining influence within the Student Union.
Unfortunately, he hadn't anticipated losing face so badly at the Medical College that morning, which made him impatient and drove him to lash out at Xiao Bin first.
"A bit too eager, aren't we!"
Zhang Yang chuckled inwardly. Zhou Yichen's performance was decent, but he was ultimately too young. Attacking someone with an excuse right at the start gave off an impression of narrow-mindedness. While this might not matter much now, it would be magnified infinitely at a crucial moment later, potentially causing him major trouble.
"The materials, I—"
Xiao Bin faltered slightly, looking somewhat nervous. He hadn't properly prepared the materials. Although he had followed Zhang Yang's instructions, facing Zhou Yichen directly caused him to panic a little.
No matter what, this qualified as failing to execute his job well.
"You what? Where are the materials?"
Zhou Yichen glared, as he was naturally someone who enjoyed twisting rules. Now that he had the moral high ground, he immediately started to capitalize on it.
"Chairman Zhou, we do have the materials, but today seems to be for summarizing and planning work. Why are you in such a hurry to see the activity reports for those clubs first?"
Zhang Yang spoke up again, and this time, even more people looked surprised.
Everyone knew that Zhang Yang usually ignored Zhou Yichen. To speak up twice, and then a third time, was a stark departure from his normal behavior.
However, considering Zhou Yichen's previous question, some people found a measure of understanding. Zhou Yichen was clearly targeting Xiao Bin, who was now Zhang Yang's only supporter in the Student Union. If he didn't defend Xiao Bin, Zhang Yang would truly become isolated and might even have to leave the Student Union.
Under these circumstances, anyone else would have felt compelled to step in.
Thinking this, several neutral Student Union officers felt a touch of melancholy—when one fox dies, the others feel the chill. Zhou Yichen was too overbearing; even Zhang Yang, who could once stand against him, was now in this predicament. If they didn't submit in the future, they wondered if they, too, would be swept out.
With this thought, they naturally felt more sympathy for Zhang Yang and a growing wariness toward Zhou Yichen.
"The club activities are part of the work we need to summarize today. Our Student Union exists primarily to serve all students, so we naturally need to know what activities these clubs have conducted—which are beneficial and worth promoting, and which need improvement!"
Zhou Yichen glanced up at Zhang Yang. He was also somewhat taken aback by Zhang Yang's behavior today, unsure what Zhang Yang was trying to achieve, but he offered a rebuttal. His meaning was clear: I intend to deal with your people today, let’s see what you do about it.
"Chairman Zhou is so dedicated to his work; perhaps I was overthinking things. Xiao Bin, give the materials to Chairman Zhou so he can examine them thoroughly and provide a comprehensive summary!"
Zhang Yang chuckled and said softly to Xiao Bin beside him. Xiao Bin was momentarily stunned, looking at Zhang Yang with great confusion. His materials were far from complete; handing them over now was just handing over leverage.
"Just give them to him. I'll handle everything!"
Zhang Yang smiled calmly, an unnatural but distinct aura emanating from him. Influenced by Zhang Yang, Xiao Bin slowly nodded and handed over all the information he had collected to Zhou Yichen.
