Over three hundred Roman warriors, clad in energy armor covered by thick blue force fields, systematically assaulted the Aurora Power Station. Each shot from their long-hafted poleaxes precisely blasted away one or more guards hiding behind the station's structures. (For the full novel text, visit Shiliu Literature Net.) Nearly half of the power station's surface architecture, spanning several square kilometers, had been utterly destroyed, sending plumes of thick smoke straight into the sky, where it merged indistinguishably with the heavy clouds overhead.
The ground was a chaotic mess of fallen guards in grey uniforms. Gu Xiachen swept his binoculars across the entire perimeter of the power station and counted at least eight hundred guard corpses lying scattered about, meaning more than half of the garrison had already fallen.
The Roman warriors pressed forward steadily, their high-energy particle beams obliterating guards and their cover one after another.
"Damn it!"
Gu Xiachen suddenly cursed aloud. A heavy transport truck had just been destroyed by the Romans. The guards thrown clear by the plasma blast behind the truck were not wearing the usual grey uniforms, but the crisp attire of Federal Police. Lying haphazardly near the heavy truck were over twenty police vehicles; clearly, these officers had rushed from the nearest town to reinforce the Aurora Power Station.
"Aaaah..." frantic screams rose from the ground. A dozen power station staff, dressed in white work overalls, could not withstand the relentless pressure of the advancing Romans. Grabbing light firearms, they charged out from their hiding places. These non-professional combatants were pulverized into dust before they could even squeeze their triggers.
Blue plasma blasts flashed everywhere, reducing everything in the Romans' path to fragments. Vehicles, walls, buildings, massive conduits—everything vaporized by the high-energy particle streams was hurled high into the sky amidst the blue conflagration.
"Attack!" Commander Qiu Ran roared. "Battalion One, Battalion Two, advance! Battalions Three, Four, and Five, follow Uncle Hu. We secure the surface buildings of the reactor!"
Gu Xiachen, long unable to contain himself, let out a wild cry to the heavens. He leaped from a height of over two hundred meters, shouting, "Battalion One, Battalion Two, follow me! Cover the ground guards' retreat!"
Snatching a twelve-point-seven-millimeter, three-barreled heavy machine gun in a reverse grip, Gu Xiachen descended. As he dropped, the heavy machine gun unleashed a muffled roar, spitting a flame nearly three meters long from its muzzle. The recoil from its extreme firing rate of thirteen thousand rounds per minute violently propelled Gu Xiachen upward several more meters, nearly causing him to collide with the helicopter he had just jumped from.
Commander Qiu Ran laughed maniacally a few times, hoisting a quad-mounted heavy rocket launcher onto his shoulder, and pulled the trigger on a Roman warrior charging at the very forefront.
Four dull thuds echoed as four heavy rockets screamed through the air, slamming into the single Roman warrior.
The blue force field flickered violently. The energy shield, originally three inches thick, was reduced to the thickness of a single finger by the intense explosion. The Roman spat blood and was thrown back; the shockwave from the four heavy rockets overwhelmed him. Just as Gu Xiachen's gun barrel swept across, a torrent of steel slammed into the Roman, delivering a brutal blow. Hundreds of large-caliber rounds hammered the warrior's armor shield, causing blue sparks to fly. Another rocket descended from the helicopter, and the Roman's energy shield finally shattered.
Over thirty heavy machine gun rounds pierced the Roman's body. His nearly three-meter-tall frame was severed at the waist, and golden blood sprayed outward over fifteen meters in the wake of the bullet stream.
Gu Xiachen landed heavily. He gripped the heavy machine gun tightly and unleashed a frantic barrage. A dozen or so Romans stumbled backward repeatedly. While the energy armor protected their bodies from direct bullet penetration, the immense kinetic energy of the rounds was something they could not easily absorb. Even with the auxiliary power of the energy suits, the Romans could only retreat continuously.
Dozens of high-energy particle streams shot in from both sides. Ten meters from Gu Xiachen, the heat radiating from the plasma clusters began to incinerate his eyelashes one by one. Gu Xiachen dove to the ground in panic. Several mercenaries who had just rappelled down behind him on ropes vanished into thin smoke without a sound within the blue flames.
"I'll destroy your mothers!" Gu Xiachen roared in fury. His machine gun roared again, its massive hail of bullets forcing the Romans to fall back.
While sweeping his fire, Gu Xiachen yelled toward the station guards hiding behind crude cover, "Retreat! Everyone fall back, establish a defensive line behind our commander! Move!"
The station guards, already shaken, along with the few dozen surviving reinforcement police officers and the hastily armed staff, scrambled out from behind their cover. Under the covering fire of Gu Xiachen and the mercenaries who were rapidly descending, these personnel successfully escaped the Roman pursuit.
Gu Xiachen fought while retreating. The mercenaries of the Internal Guard's First and Second Battalions expertly covered each other, withdrawing continuously along the path.
All two thousand seven hundred mercenaries had landed. Dozens of biplane helicopters hovered less than ten meters above the ground. Weapon pylons, three meters long, suddenly extended from the sides of the cabins. Fire erupted from the dark weapon pods as hundreds of missiles and over two thousand large-caliber rockets screamed in with a piercing shriek.
The blast wave from the explosions flung the three hundred-plus Roman warriors backward, shattering almost all the blue flames burning on their armor. Gu Xiachen and the mercenaries cheered, sweeping accurate fire over the airborne Romans. Over fifty Roman warriors were struck, bleeding profusely, and killed instantly.
'Woom,' a vast blue energy wave washed over the remaining Roman warriors. Seeing the tide turn against them, these Romans immediately activated their most potent innate weapon—a Psychic Shockwave.
Without any command from Gu Xiachen, and even before the shockwaves fully manifested, the Internal Guard mercenaries had already thrown nearly a hundred specialized electromagnetic grenades. A continuous, grating whine filled the air as high-frequency electromagnetic waves swept the surroundings. The concentration of electrons in the air rose sharply, causing heavy static charges to build up on everyone's skin; even slight movements resulted in large bursts of electrical fire.
The electromagnetic waves weakened the Romans' psychic shockwaves, but the blue psychic energy tore through the rampant electromagnetic interference, still sweeping onward. Only Gu Xiachen experienced a brief moment of blurred vision. However, mercenaries from the First and Second Battalions of the Internal Guard simultaneously began to bleed from all seven facial orifices. Nearly a hundred mercenaries screamed, clutching their heads. Their skulls suddenly expanded, followed by a sharp crack, and their heads exploded, spraying red and white matter everywhere.
"Elites! Uncle Hu! Damn it, they are Roman Elites!" Gu Xiachen roared into his comms unit, his mouth still wet. "The intensity of their psychic shockwave is at least three times stronger than the one in the African Black Forest last time!"
To inflict such casualties despite the neutralization effect of the special electromagnetic grenades confirmed these Roman warriors were indeed elites—equivalent to the Special Marine Corps of the Earth Federation Space Fleet!
Commander Qiu Ran cursed wildly, sending greetings to the ancestors of the Romans while affectionately complimenting the white and tender backside of the Earth Federation Military's high-ranking generals' mothers!
"Damn it, why are such elite Romans here? This should be a family raiding party, not the main Roman army! Could it be that the Romans and the Earth Federation are on the brink of all-out war again?"
Commander Qiu Ran's roaring curses still echoed when, from beneath the thick white snow outside the power station, dozens of tall, ferocious beast shapes suddenly sprang forth. There were more than sixty white wolves, each the size of the stoutest bull. Their nearly silver fur flowed around their bodies, and their deep blue eyes swam with murderous intent. Their sharp claws and fangs emitted a faint golden sheen under the cold searchlights of the station. These white wolves surged from the ground, rushing forward like the Hell Hounds of Norse mythology.
A terrifying thought flashed through Gu Xiachen's mind, and he cried out in shock, "Roman bio-beasts! Roman bio-beasts! Commander, it's an ambush! Retreat, retreat!"
The wolves had erupted from a distance of at least eight hundred meters from Gu Xiachen, but in the time it took him to utter those few words, they were already lunging at him.
Gu Xiachen dropped all his weapons and ammunition. His claws were enveloped in swirling cold energy; the skin and blood vessels on his hands became nearly perfectly transparent. Emitting an oppressive chill, Gu Xiachen met the charge of the white wolves, loudly commanding, "Internal Guard Battalions One and Two, fall back immediately!"
His claws swept down like the wind, slamming brutally onto the skull of one white wolf. With a loud 'clang' like two blocks of iron colliding, Gu Xiachen's claws experienced a sharp jolt of pain. The white wolf before him let out a wretched howl, thrown back a dozen meters by the immense force. Ten deep claw marks scored the wolf's skull, penetrating straight into its brain. Thick, viscous cerebral matter mixed with blood continuously sprayed from the ten deep wounds.
Forcing down the ache in his finger bones, Gu Xiachen mustered all his strength and swung hundreds of claw strikes toward the seven or eight white wolves nearest him. Sharp, pure white energy slashes shot out in all directions. Large patches of fur were ripped from the wolves' bodies, and blood sprayed forth from their hides. The wounded wolves simultaneously lunged at Gu Xiachen. The wolf whose skull had been gravely injured stared fixedly at Gu Xiachen, suddenly opened its massive jaws, and spat a jet of pale, cold vapor at him before collapsing dead.
Gu Xiachen, dodging the wolves' attacks, failed to notice the cold vapor approaching. Caught off guard, his legs were instantly encased in the chill. A solid blue block of ice fused his legs to the snow and ice on the ground. Gu Xiachen's rapidly moving body froze stiffly, and seven or eight wolf claws simultaneously raked across his body, drawing streaks of blood.
His leg power surged, shattering the blue ice block. Gu Xiachen's finger bones also turned semi-transparent.
