"Going to Heaven?"
Ye Wen glanced sideways at Cui Jun, noticing the man's expression also carried some surprise. This suggested that establishing a sect didn't necessarily require visiting Heaven itself. Perhaps an subordinate office could handle it just fine. Even if they still needed to report their unauthorized ascension to this immortal realm, why would they need to personally travel all the way to Heaven?
Yang Jian seemed aware of Ye Wen's thoughts and smiled: "There are still matters requiring your sect's involvement!"
At these words, Ye Wen felt as though a dialogue box had appeared before him with two options: agreeing or declining. What consequences each option might bring remained unknown, but analyzing the current situation led to one conclusion - agreeing seemed more beneficial for Shushan Sect!
Yang Jian had already opened this request, asking for their assistance. Refusing now would mean severing ties completely with the Second Prince of Heaven. He also doubted Heaven's Court would allow them to remain in this realm indefinitely - relocation becoming inevitable, subject entirely to Yang Jian's mood regarding petty reprisals.
Acceptance, however... it meant Shushan Sect would formally align with a powerful figure in the immortal hierarchy. This association would greatly accelerate the sect's development, perhaps even allowing them to catch up within decades with those ancient sects thriving for centuries. Establishing solid footing in this realm became possible through Yang Jian's support and resources.
Yet complications lay in what Yang Jian requested - these tasks likely wouldn't be simple. Especially considering previous conversations and Shushan Sect's current position, he suspected these matters connected to other factions, possibly involving conflicts between major powers. If so, careful planning would be necessary before any decisions were made. Rushing into agreements without understanding the situation wasn't his style.
After pondering briefly, Ye Wen directly asked: "Would the True Lord kindly explain in detail?"
Yang Jian seeing this response gave no pressure but simply nodded: "I shall organize my forces and establish camp beneath your mountain, waiting for Master Ye's arrival."
Though seemingly unrelated to current matters, Ye Wen understood - Yang Jian was saying certain details couldn't be discussed here. If he wished to know more fully, Yang Jian would return, make arrangements, then personally explain everything. This also allowed time for discussion with disciples.
Nodding in agreement, Ye Wen rose and bowed: "That's best." This served as a dismissal gesture. Yang Jian had already stood up, joining Guan Yu and Yuan Hong to reciprocate the bow before turning and stepping out of the hall, crossing into the sky to organize his forces.
Yang Jian's departure drew all eyes back to Cui Jun - the only outsider in the hall now that Li Xuan and his disciples had retreated elsewhere for rest.
Considering briefly, Cui Jun said: "Old Daoist drank too much... not sure..."
Ye Wen nodded then gave a discreet glance to Zhou Zhiruo who immediately led Cui Jun out of the main hall. Ordinary disciples were assigned to prepare accommodations before returning with an amused expression.
Now addressing his assembled disciples lined up on both sides, Ye Wen decided first business was to properly introduce everyone: "Bring all our personally taught disciples here immediately. Once gathered, we'll start by recognizing each other. Even if memorizing faces proves difficult now, at least establish familiarity so no one mistakes fellow sect members as strangers."
His recent return from the Nine Provinces Cauldron and withdrawal of Shushan Sect had left him unfamiliar with many new disciples. Similarly, most disciples didn't recognize their elders either. The immediate priority was mutual recognition - not he remembering them, but them recognizing him.
After a tea-break period, the hall swelled with people again. A sea of faces made Ye Wen's eyes blur instantly. Fortunately, he didn't need to remember these disciples personally, only that they remembered him.
When all had gathered, Nangong Huang naturally stepped forward as Shushan Sect's most respected elder and higher generation figure to introduce everyone - mainly focusing on Xu Xian and others since Ye Wen was already well-known as their ancestor who brought them here.
Xu Xian, Huang Rongrong, Ning Ruxue, Hua Yi and other senior figures were introduced first, followed by Ye Wen's recorded disciples. Though these latter had only formal ties to him, their generational rank remained high. Guan Luyan managed well enough, but both Krais and Tommy felt awkward hearing older titles from peers or even younger people.
Gu Shuying initially thought her generation was the lowest until she discovered many here were actually junior to her - nearly all under twenty were her subordinates! This revelation proved simultaneously fascinating and amusing.
For most young disciples, today marked a day of generational demotion. A new "great-ancestor" had already emerged, now adding "great-great-uncle" with an entire roster of uncles and aunts to contend with - truly headache-inducing.
"This means no more casual fun..."
Such thoughts flashed through every young mind briefly before they realized even with just Ye Wen's return alone, their freedom of play had already vanished completely.
After elders introduced themselves, Ye Wen nodded and instructed them to bring their direct disciples for recognition as well.
Following ranking order, Yue Ning's students should have appeared first but instead his concubine stepped forward holding an infant in her arms before Ye Wen.
Nangong Huang explained: "Ever since my brother married, he feared Shushan Sect becoming his wife's family's private sect and never took disciples. Thus... this is our only successor now."
Everyone understood the unspoken reasons behind the unfinished statement but said nothing at that moment. Nodding in understanding, Ye Wen refocused on the child.
"What name was given to this girl?" Technically a granddaughter for Yue Ning's line, she should address him as great-great-grandfather at best - even his concubine would need to add 'sister' before calling him grandfather...
"Replying to Great-Grandpa..." Ye Wen felt uneasy with the title. Shifting slightly in his seat, he tried not to appear too unsettled though no one noticed.
"She hasn't been formally named yet..."
Just then Xu Xian spoke up: "What need for naming? Call her Yue Ling Shan!" His whisper added: "Considering my brother's taste... he would've named this child something like that anyway."
Ye Wen clearly heard everything and noticed Ning Ruxue's slight smile before pretending ignorance entirely. Unexpectedly, most people in the hall approved of Xu Xian's suggestion - even Zhou Zhiruo mumbled twice then nodded. This action caused Hua Yi and Huang Rongrong to secretly laugh as they recognized another victim of Ye Wen's peculiar naming preferences!
With that decided, Yue Ling Shan became the child's name and Shushan Sect's only heir from Yue Ning's line. Ye Wen planned to personally instruct her once she reached understanding age but started preparations now. Flipping his hand open revealed a vial he gave to Hua Yi: "Starting today, apart from your cultivation, you'll take care of Ling Shan. Take half pill daily in warm water for one year then full pill each day!"
Then producing a medicinal formula: "This is bath medication. Try locating the ingredients and make decoctions for her daily baths!"
Hua Yi nodded and carefully stored both items. This arrangement wasn't given to the mother, Cong Shuang, as she had no martial cultivation skills - Ye Wen additionally instructed Hua Yi to teach basic health knowledge to Cong Shuang so at least she could stay alive long enough to watch Ling Shan grow up!
With Yue Ning's line temporarily arranged, attention turned to Zhou Zhiruo's lineage. She gestured and the disciple who'd caught Ye Wen's eye earlier approached respectfully: "Disciple Chang Mei, bowing to Great Grandmaster!"
"Chang Mei?"
This seemed more a title than name? Looking puzzled at Zhou Zhiruo, her second disciple explained: "Chang Mei was originally an ordinary person. When his family suffered tragedy, I happened upon the situation and helped him avenge his family's death before he stayed with me."
"To help him move past grief, I taught him Daoist scriptures. After three years, he chose to become a monk and join my sect. Given his unique eyebrows differing from common people, I gave him this title. He abandoned his original name long ago - over twenty years now!"
"Oh..."
Such twists were unexpected for Ye Wen who also understood Zhou Zhiruo's reluctance in taking many disciples due to her infamous reputation causing others' deaths through faction conflicts or illness. Thus Chang Mei remained her sole inheritor.
"What martial skills did your master teach you?"
Chang Mei replied respectfully: "Besides basic sect techniques, I received Small Shadowless Palms and Demise Twin Swords from my Master's teachings."
Ye Wen looked startled at Zhou Zhiruo before realizing these were among her best techniques - clearly Chang Mei possessed exceptional talent.
"Really? How is your proficiency?"
"I'm dull-witted, only reaching half of my Master's skill level!"
Initially believing this, Ye Wen then reconsidered as he noticed Zhou Zhiruo nearby. Naturally, Chang Mei couldn't claim to surpass his master! Moreover, having entered the sect later with less cultivation time than Zhou Zhiruo made weaker skills understandable but not necessarily half her capability.
Sure enough, Nangong Huang whispered: "Chang Mei is arguably the most outstanding among our ninth generation disciples despite some early deaths of promising students. Given he joined midway, achieving this level is already remarkable!"
Nodding in understanding, Ye Wen spoke briefly before dismissing Chang Mei to the side.
Next came Xu Ping's lineage. Though his son Xu Fan was weak and died fighting between himself and his child producing an heir, now Xu Ping's grandson Xu Changqing was brought forward. Checking him over, Ye Wen noticed slightly improved health compared to previous encounters so instructed proper care until his body recovered enough for medicinal baths similar to Yue Ling Shan.
"Xu Changqing?" Xu Xian glanced at Li Xiaoyao and whispered: "Is your generational order messed up?"
Li Xiaoyao, experienced with gaming, immediately recognized the name's significance when hearing about another Xu Ping's grandson bearing his own name! Glancing at his teacher, he realized instantly it was a joke from Ye Wen... but perhaps not too late to change things?
Sure enough, Liu Muyan's daughter appeared next. When she announced "Liu Mengli", Li Xiaoyao's face turned into an 'O'. Meanwhile Xu Xian stood on tiptoe scanning the crowd: "No sign of Yun Tianhe or Murong Ziying yet? Or maybe Dugu Yuyun and Situ Zhong are here?"
Ignoring all this, Ye Wen simply instructed Liu Mengli to focus on cultivating Purple Mist Divine Technique before selecting another suitable method once mastery was achieved. He hadn't decided what to do with her yet but sent her aside after brief instructions as Liu Muyan had no disciples naturally having dedicated his life entirely to officialdom so she remained the sole inheritor of his line.
By now, Ye Wen felt melancholy. Having taken seven disciples himself but only four lines remaining - each a single lineage barely continuing their bloodlines! These disciples all failed in propagation standards for Shushan Sect.
Though three more disciples existed, Emperor Wei Hong unlikely to take apprentices. Standing there with his two attendants - an old eunuch serving him decades and the most trusted general from his reign - both remained subordinates rather than disciples. While they might eventually join Shushan Sect through association, expecting them to spread the sect's influence? That could cause ridicule about Shushan's lack of capable disciples!
Though sending these two with sufficient cultivation could generate superficial claims like 'our talents are flourishing', that wouldn't help much now...
Sighing, Ye Wen called for Guo Jing... Once Guo Jing finished introducing his direct disciples (after Li Xiaoyao's early ascension left no time to take apprentices), only Nangong Huang's Xu Xian line remained except maybe Li Sen... Oh wait, he did leave some lineage.
Guo Jing stepped forward and summoned multiple disciples but Ye Wen noticed mostly ordinary individuals with no standout qualities. As expected from Guo Jing who admitted: "I don't select disciples based on talent - only character and diligence. If someone is sufficiently hardworking, I'll take them despite low natural ability. Hence my largest disciple count but..."
The 'but' was obvious when Guo Jing waved his hand to reveal eight elderly disciples all showing signs of aging. Likely none had reached martial arts mastery even after being brought into the immortal realm - decades from now they might all turn to dust!
Still, thanks to Guo Jing's approach, Shushan Sect appeared more populous. Though only eight disciples were called here, his actual student count exceeded twenty with many deceased while surviving ones produced their own disciples leading Guo Jing's lineage in Shushan being the largest.
As these eight stepped forward, a whole wave of grand-disciple generation emerged next! So many faces blurred Ye Wen's vision as he recognized barely any names - mostly because these disciples proved too ordinary without distinguishing features. Now his only hope lay in finding untapped potential within Guo Jing's disciples who might awaken their capabilities under this ideal cultivation environment... though current signs suggested low probability.
Next, Nangong Huang introduced his own disciples but they had all died leaving two grand-disciples - the two young men assisting him daily since childhood. He named them Zhou Qingfeng and Dao Mingyue while Ye Wen privately mused: "Besides 'Qingfeng' and 'Mingyue', could you think of anything else?"
Regarding Li Sen's lineage, some descendants existed but none impressed Ye Wen particularly. However another young Taoist caught his attention before Nangong Huang explained: "This youth is the only inheritor from Yudong Sect now officially part of our sect - he ranks with Qingfeng and Mingyue!"
"Er... that makes him my great-great-grandson generation then!"
