The Blood Rat leaped onto the ground only to be met by the ferocious strikes of several soldiers. Though its movements were incredibly swift, it still took two hits to the body, splashing out two small pools of blood, though neither was fatal.
The intense, searing pain completely enraged the Blood Rat. It let out a sharp shriek and savagely lunged at the nearby soldiers. Startled and terrified, these men frantically pulled their triggers, all thought of conserving ammunition vanished, replaced only by the desperate desire to survive this ordeal.
Splat!
Its black, blood-soaked claws swept out. The soldiers' handguns roared like a gale, striking the Blood Rat repeatedly on its forehead and forelimbs, leaving bloody streaks everywhere. But the onslaught didn't last long; the creature closed the distance before the soldiers could even draw their machetes, tearing their bodies apart. They fell into pools of their own blood, screaming.
"Get out of the way, quickly move!" "Stay away from it! Damn it, just keep shooting!" "Aaaah—"
The surrounding crowd erupted into minor chaos. In the blink of an eye, three or four soldiers were dead. Most of these ordinary soldiers possessed strength equivalent to only three to five men, and many of the rookies on the team had even lower physical resilience. How could they withstand a ferocious monster like the Blood Rat? They scattered in panic.
Ye Chen stood not far off, witnessing this gruesome scene. Although accustomed to blood and death, his brow still furrowed slightly. Seeing the Blood Rat about to charge toward his position, he swiftly drew the standard Type 64 pistol issued by the army, narrowed his gaze, and rapidly squeezed the trigger!
Bang-bang-bang!
Three consecutive shots all struck the side of the Blood Rat's head. Any careful observer would note that all three bullets impacted the exact same spot. This level of technique wasn't inherently difficult; many soldiers with decent marksmanship could achieve it. However, landing all three hits on a Blood Rat moving at high speed was far from ordinary.
As he fired, Ye Chen’s gun hand vibrated rapidly three times, instantly adjusting the trajectory of the shots to ensure the perfect cluster.
Thud!
The Blood Rat’s body convulsed, trembling slightly. It labored to lift a paw, but all its strength seemed to have suddenly drained away. Its body swayed, and amidst the belated gunfire from the other soldiers, it collapsed onto the ground, blood flowing down its frame, staining the earth red.
The surrounding soldiers let out a collective sigh of relief.
"Finally dead." "Damn it, that nearly cost me my life." "If only we had the power of those Generals, they could smash this monster dead with a single punch."
As the soldiers relaxed, the personnel registering information further away exchanged glances, uncertain how to proceed. After all, too many people had fired at the monster; it was hard to pinpoint exactly who delivered the killing blow.
A leading man stated, "It must have been that soldier. This monster was still full of vicious energy, but the moment his bullets struck, it immediately weakened."
The others considered this and found it logical, nodding their heads. They began the registration: A grim-faced, black-haired soldier killed a Level Seven Blood Rat!
They would confirm Ye Chen’s name later. While there were many black-haired, cold-faced soldiers present, those whose memories weren't sharp enough wouldn't have been assigned to the Information Department to record such details.
"That new guy is amazing, taking down the Blood Rat in just a few shots." "I wonder if he coated his bullets with poison?" "Hmph, how is that possible? I think it's just superior shooting technique."
The male and female registrars paid increased attention to Ye Chen, impressed by his skill.
Dressed in camouflage, Ye Chen quickly moved towards the entrance of the sewer tunnel after dispatching the Blood Rat. The area was strewn with monster limbs, broken bones, and several human corpses ripped in half. Most of the dead victims' eyes were wide with terror, despair, and regret.
Squeak! Roar!
Monsters rushed forward from the sewer entrance in waves. Several prime firing positions were already occupied by soldiers wielding heavy weaponry, whose massive firepower shredded many creatures the moment they emerged, leaving them shattered and falling to the ground in despair.
Ye Chen did not use his energy pistol. While incredibly powerful, it was too conspicuous. It would certainly be reported to the Investigation Department afterward, potentially leading high-ranking officials in the base city to seize it under the guise of "research." Thus, he decisively abandoned that idea. He skillfully swapped the magazine on his Type 64 pistol, targeted a zombie rat, and squeezed the trigger three times in rapid succession.
Bang-bang-bang!
Three shots hitting the same spot—the zombie rat shuddered and fell, a bloody hole the size of a thumb marring its forehead.
This display of handgun skill drew the attention of many nearby, including the Colonel-level figures holding machine guns, who looked over in surprise. It normally took at least ten or more bullets to kill a monster with a standard pistol, requiring the creature's head to be riddled with holes. Even a single bullet hitting the head might not immediately kill a monster, unless it was a powerful handgun like a Desert Eagle. Moreover, Zombie Rats were tougher; they didn't care about superficial injuries and had to be hit in the brain.
Ye Chen's three shots—the first cracking the skull, the second penetrating deep into the brain—meant the monster was essentially doomed. The third bullet ensuring its immediate collapse.
Bang-bang-bang!
The pistol shook slightly, and another three rounds flew out, striking the head of another Level Eight monster. Instantly, this Level Eight creature staggered and fell dead.
The surrounding people stared, dumbfounded. Hitting a fast-moving monster was already remarkable; achieving three shots to the exact same spot for an instant kill was incredible.
"Just a Soldier rank, yet his marksmanship is this devastating!" "Too powerful." "A person like this, as long as he doesn't die prematurely, is guaranteed to become a great General someday."
Many felt a sense of awe, and those near Ye Chen subconsciously backed away, as if sensing an invisible pressure emanating from the man.
Bang-bang-bang! Bang-bang-bang! Bang-bang-bang…
The three-shot burst became a melody, a death knell. Every time it sounded, everyone knew another monster had fallen, even powerful Level Ten monsters being dispatched by this most ordinary of handguns.
Ye Chen's expression remained placid. He walked to an advantageous position and stood still, his pistol continuously spitting sparks. Each volley was three rounds, and each volley resulted in a monster falling dead. There was almost no margin for error!
Not a single shot missed!
In his previous life, Ye Chen had initially been a firearm novice. But after gaining access to a pistol early in his military service, he honed his skills through relentless practice. By the later stages, anyone could perform a three-shot burst; it was a very common shooting technique. More advanced techniques like 'Heavenly Maiden Scattering Flowers' or 'Bullet Rain' were area-of-effect moves, best utilized with heavy machine guns.
The people nearby had grown numb to the sound of "Bang-bang-bang." Even the squad leaders looked at Ye Chen with respect. They understood that someone who could casually kill Level Ten monsters while still at the Soldier rank was almost certain to become a General, unless fate intervened with an accident.
Hiss—
Suddenly, a piercing, enraged roar echoed from the sewer tunnel, a sound like fingernails screeching across glass. Immediately, the onlookers witnessed a horrifying sight: over a dozen tentacles, as thick as fingers, jet black, extended from the sewer, each about a zhang long and extremely slick.
Everyone gasped as a creature the size of a tiger, covered entirely in tentacles, crawled out, sprouting numerous writhing appendages.
Ye Chen’s gaze sharpened. "Tentacle Rat Beast!"
The Tentacle Rat Beast was an extremely powerful monster, evolved from a mutated rat, becoming a new strain of rodent creature. All its tentacles carried potent venom and had blood-sucking capabilities. At this stage, Month Three, it possessed Level Twelve physical resilience.
Dudu dudu dudu…
The machine gun in a Colonel's hands chattered like a gale, sweeping bullets toward the Tentacle Rat Beast. They could all see that this creature was immensely powerful; the stronger it was, the more military merit it represented!
Instantly, the Tentacle Rat Beast accumulated many bloody wounds but was far from dead. Instead, it was provoked. Its tentacles lashed out into the crowd. The slender appendages held immense power; one coiled around a Captain who was firing his rifle, and the tentacle immediately turned crimson, while the captured Captain’s body rapidly withered and shriveled.
