Xiao He smiled faintly, "That's easy enough. I brought proof with me. Whatever I write down is what it is. Watch me!" Xiao He pulled out a pen and scribbled a few characters on the document: "Inspector Wang Xiaohe."
Zhou Huan scratched his head, the corner of his mouth curling up slightly, "You really do have a way with things. Let's go in."
At the conference room door, Xiao He flashed her identification in front of the SWAT officers. The two officers immediately snapped to attention and saluted, "Officer Wang, please come in."
Zhou Huan and Xiao He entered the conference room. Yang Xiaoling was seated in the central chair, flanked by two police officers watching her. Director Li sat opposite her; the two appeared to be at a standoff.
Seeing the newcomers, Director Li turned to Zhou Huan and sneered, "Hmph, Master Zhou, I was just looking for you. I didn't expect you to walk right in. What's the proof? Came to turn yourself in?"
"Turn myself in? I, Zhou Huan, have never considered that I've done anything wrong. I'm here to honor our agreement. I need a certificate to go inspect the two deceased in the morgue." As Zhou Huan spoke, he opened his satchel and pulled out the photograph he had found on Mount Luoling, handing it to Director Li. "Look at this. This photo was found on Mount Luoling. Not a single person pictured here remains. All that’s left is a [expletive implied/censored]. I'm leaving it with you; I hope you can safeguard it well."
Director Li took the photograph, looked Zhou Huan up and down, then smirked, "I knew it. How could Master Zhou possibly be a cover-up artist! Come, come, everyone sit down. It seems we truly wronged your brother and this young lady."
Just then, a SWAT officer entered from outside and whispered a few things in Director Li's ear. Director Li whispered a few words back, and the officer left. A sudden [sound/action implied/censored] echoed from the hallway.
"Officer Wang, I didn't realize you arrived with an imperial decree in hand. I, Li, have underestimated you. Please forgive any disrespect I may have shown," Director Li, truly a slippery old fox, changed his expression faster than taking off his trousers, and his maneuvers were utterly ruthless.
"Xiaoling, are you alright? What did they ask you just now? Just tell them the truth, whatever you know." This time, Xiao He treated Xiaoling like her own younger sister, considering that Xiaoling only came into the picture after Xiao He and Zhou Huan were married.
Xiaoling, hearing Xiao He call her this, couldn't help but feel overjoyed. After a moment of consideration, she said, "Alright, Director Li. You asked me earlier if I had any other living relatives, didn't you? I'll tell you now: I only have this one brother, Zhou Huan. As for my specific past relatives, I will tell you more later. I vaguely remember having a grandfather, but I never met him; I only heard about him from our old neighbors. Is there anything else you need to ask?"
"No, that's all. I just wanted to inquire about Miss Yang's family situation. It's fine now; you can go." He then personally wrote out a certificate, signed his name at the bottom, and handed the document to Zhou Huan. "Take this downstairs to the entrance and have any official seal stamped on it."
Zhou Huan took the certificate and, with Dongzi and Xiaoling, left the conference room. They went downstairs to get the seal, then left the building and drove away. Once in the car, Zhou Huan remarked, "These guys really do have something to hide. In just this short time, everyone in the hallway has cleared out. It seems we need to move a little faster."
Xiao He remained in the conference room, her eyes fixed intently on Director Li. "Director Li, I need to examine the case files from the last two months while I'm here. I suspect that the people in this photograph are all suspects. In other words, I need the [details implied/censored] of the people in the photo—their detailed information."
"That’s no problem; I’ll get them for you right away." Director Li turned, opened the door, called in an officer, whispered a few instructions, and then returned to the conference room.
Xiao He smiled, "Director Li, when I arrived, headquarters specially asked me to pass along their commendation to you. It’s only verbal for now, please don't mind. It’s the leadership’s wish that we keep things low-key until this case is solved, and then you will all be properly rewarded."
"The leadership is certainly thoughtful of their subordinates, knowing how hard we work. I trust we will solve this case very quickly, especially now that Master Zhou is with us." The moment Director Li finished speaking, everyone in the conference room was momentarily blinded by a fierce, rapid flashing of light.
Xiao He maintained her smile, but upon seeing the flashes, Director Li looked as if his soul had fled; he curled up under his chair, sweat pouring down his face in torrents.
After the flashing stopped, Director Li slowly struggled to his feet. "Officer Wang, I apologize for the spectacle. This is a condition I've had since childhood; a single flash of light makes me uncontrollably unwell."
Xiao He offered no reply, merely maintaining her unchanging smile. Soon after, someone knocked on the door and brought in a large stack of files and a pile of case folders.
"Director Li, come on. Our task now is simple: we each review half of these materials." Xiao He stated it simply; it was also a way for her to express trust in Director Li.
Director Li regained his composure and smiled faintly, "Is that so? Then I shall take more to review. You are so overworked, and you trust me so much; how could I not do my duty diligently?"
"That would be best. Let's begin!" Xiao He and Director Li sat in the conference room, reading the materials page by page, examining every single word.
Meanwhile, Zhou Huan, leading Dongzi and Yang Xiaoling, headed straight for the hospital morgue. Before they even reached the door, the persistent nuisance, Sui Xi, blocked their path. "Master Zhou, why are you here at this time? I just finished tidying up a few bodies."
"Master Sui Xi, please open the door for us. If I had known you were guarding it, I wouldn't have gone to the trouble of getting another certificate from Director Li," Zhou Huan replied smoothly.
Sui Xi laughed, "It is precisely because I am here that the proof is required. This was Director Li’s own instruction, so you must give me the certificate, or it will be difficult for me to report back."
The corner of Zhou Huan's mouth curved slightly. "So that's how it is. Very well, Master Sui Xi, I ask that you keep watch outside for me. I worry about any lone spirits coming here. My apprentice was injured earlier and might not be able to guard against any lingering ghosts."
"Ah! Master Zhou, you jest. Don't I have to follow you inside? If there is any issue with the bodies, won't I be able to help somehow?" Sui Xi sounded quite polite, but Zhou Huan felt a distinct displeasure.
As soon as Dongzi heard this, he grew impatient. "Brother, let's hurry in! What's the point of wasting time with this fool out here?"
"What? Who are you calling a fool?" Sui Xi was instantly enraged by Dongzi's remark. He tore the certificate in his hand into two pieces with a swish, "If that's how you talk, hmph! You want to get in? No way. You can wait outside with your rear end sticking out!"
"Go to hell!" Dongzi’s hand was indeed fast. He produced a brick from somewhere and swung it squarely at Sui Xi's head.
A streak of bright red blood flew horizontally from Sui Xi's forehead. "Aah! You ungrateful brat, you dare get physical with me? See if I don't take care of you today!" Sui Xi pulled an object of some sort from his pocket and swung it toward Dongzi. Zhou Huan stepped between them and raised his hand to block. The tip of Sui Xi's hand barely grazed Dongzi’s arm.
"Ah!" Dongzi screamed as a deep gash was sliced open on his arm.
Sensing the situation worsening, Zhou Huan spun around and slammed a punch into Sui Xi's face. He tripped him up, and Sui Xi fell sideways onto the ground. Zhou Huan then firmly grasped Sui Xi's wrist, employing his 'Plucking Flower Finger' technique, nearly crushing Sui Xi's wrist.
Clang! A dagger fell to the ground, and a sinister beam of light shot up from the floor, aiming directly for Zhou Huan's eyes.
"Well, well! Carrying such a strange knife—you aren't from Shandong. This type of blade is only held by bamboo-cutting workers in the great mountains of Sichuan. I suppose you came from there too?" Zhou Huan, indeed knowledgeable, knew many things. His question left Sui Xi utterly speechless, forcing him to slump under Zhou Huan's knees in surrender.
"Master Zhou, I submit! Let me go, and I won't do anything, I promise," Sui Xi seemed to beg for mercy, but Zhou Huan had no intention of trusting him.
Zhou Huan clenched his fist, murmuring, "Brother, I apologize. You rest outside while I get to work!" With that, Zhou Huan raised his hand and delivered a heavy punch to Sui Xi's carotid artery in his neck. Sui Xi lost consciousness.
