Zhou Huan and Mr. Old Wang left the director's office and headed downstairs. Before they even reached the bottom, they ran straight into Dongzi, who was still groggy from sleep.
Mr. Old Wang politely stepped forward to greet him, but Dongzi completely ignored him, paid Zhou Huan no mind either, and simply staggered toward the restroom.
"Bang!" Dongzi’s face slammed into the restroom door, knocking it open. He then lurched inside.
At that moment, Mr. Old Wang and Zhou Huan stared blankly at the door Dongzi had just forced open. Scrawled on it were the words: "W.C. Please maintain cleanliness. Ladies' Room."
Zhou Huan started to step forward to pull Dongzi back, but he heard a ruckus erupting from inside. An aged woman’s voice shrieked loudly, "You pervert! How dare you enter the women's restroom! Get out!"
"What women's room? There isn't even a urinal in here!" The voice was undeniably Dongzi’s, delivered with surprising indignation.
Zhou Huan and Mr. Old Wang were stunned outside the door. Suddenly, the cleaning lady from the police station grabbed Dongzi by his shirt and started dragging him out. The force this auntie exerted was certainly not inferior to that of a grown man. As she pulled, she snapped, "Get out with me! Don't think just because you’re a man I can't handle you. Back in the day, I was a stunning, graceful police beauty!"
When Dongzi was finally dragged out by the auntie, Zhou Huan slapped the back of his neck: "Dongzi, what are you doing?"
That slap snapped Dongzi back to awareness. He shook his head, looking left and right. The first faces he saw were Zhou Huan and Mr. Old Wang. When he turned back, he saw the cleaning lady standing there, hands on her hips, glaring furiously at him.
"Auntie, I’m so sorry. My brother is always like this right after waking up, all confused," Zhou Huan explained on Dongzi’s behalf.
"Hmph! I don't need you shameless men talking nonsense here. What, are you three going to scare me?"
"No, no!" Zhou Huan insisted, grabbing Dongzi and taking off running, while repeatedly calling back, "Auntie, so sorry! Wrong door, we went into the wrong one!"
Pulled along by Zhou Huan, Dongzi finally registered what had happened. He didn't say anything, though; he just grinned sheepishly and followed Zhou Huan toward the exit downstairs.
Seeing this, Mr. Old Wang decided to tag along. He knew that the cleaning lady at the station was the one person you absolutely did not want to cross; you could never reason with her.
The three of them bolted out of the police station and collapsed onto a long bench beside the community grounds, gulping in air. A quick glance back at the station showed the auntie standing by the entrance, one hand resting on her sweeping broom, the other defiantly on her hip, glaring daggers at them.
Mr. Old Wang, older than the others, had turned pale from the exertion. "Oh, my heavens! I haven’t run like that in how many years? I really can’t take it anymore!"
Zhou Huan smiled faintly. "Haha, there will be plenty more opportunities later. We’ll take him to some famous temples to make donations; that involves climbing hills!"
"Indeed, indeed!" Mr. Old Wang's trust in Zhou Huan had reached its absolute zenith at that moment.
Dongzi, still slightly agitated by their conversation, interrupted, "Him making donations? What is this 'donation' stuff?"
Zhou Huan’s brow instantly furrowed as he looked at Dongzi. "Donation means giving away your things to others without expecting anything in return!"
"Oh, so we’re beggars, and the people who give us money are making donations, right?"
"Right, what they are doing is also a form of donation!" Zhou Huan explained clearly. Dongzi seemed to grasp it, nodding repeatedly.
Dongzi squinted his small eyes, fished a small pouch out of his pocket, and presented it to Mr. Old Wang. "Mr. Wang, you make a donation!"
This gesture left Zhou Huan feeling helpless. He pulled Dongzi back. "I’ve never seen you learn anything this fast before. You’ve picked that up quickly, haven't you?"
Mr. Old Wang, however, froze. His eyes held not exasperation, but deep consideration. After a moment, he spoke up voluntarily, "Dongzi is right, you know. With a gentleman like you, Zhou Huan, it would be a pity not to do something for others."
Zhou Huan was momentarily stunned by Mr. Old Wang’s words; he never imagined his goals would begin to materialize this way.
But Dongzi was already rubbing against Mr. Old Wang’s side. "Old sir, since you’re buying Brother this rundown place from Old Song, shouldn't you give me something too? Like a red envelope?"
"Oh, ha ha, yes, of course," Mr. Old Wang said, reaching into his coat pocket for his wallet. He pulled out a thick wad of crisp bills, separated half of them, and distributed them between Zhou Huan and Dongzi.
Zhou Huan initially hesitated to accept the money, but after careful thought, he pocketed it. "I’ll consider this money as what I spend to send off Old Song and Guo Hua and the others. I will use it to properly organize their send-off."
"That would be best. Let me know when you plan the arrangements. Here is my card; it has my number so you can notify me." Mr. Old Wang handed Zhou Huan a business card.
As they were talking, they noticed Dongzi staring blankly at the money in his hand, tears plopping onto the ground, his mouth twitching.
Zhou Huan was taken aback by the sight. What was wrong with Dongzi today? He hurried to ask, "Dongzi, what’s wrong? Is this...?"
Dongzi turned, his voice trembling. "Brother, since I started begging, this is the first time anyone has given me money so willingly. I’ve never had this much money before, I..." He kept choking back sobs.
Seeing Dongzi like this, Mr. Old Wang generously asked again, "Is this money enough? I can give you more if it’s not!"
"Waaaah!" Dongzi threw his head back and wailed. "Mom! I have money! Tomorrow I’ll have my brother burn you more paper money and ingots! Brothers, I’m treating you all to a huge meal!" Dongzi’s tears now streamed down his face, flowing relentlessly like a raging river!
"Chairman Wang, the hospital just called asking us to come over. They said the young master is showing some change!" A bodyguard came running up from a distance to report to Mr. Old Wang.
Upon hearing this, Mr. Old Wang threw back a quick instruction: "Wang Qiang needs me, I’ll go check immediately. You two carry on!" Then, accompanied by his bodyguard, he got into the car and sped away.
Zhou Huan and Dongzi watched Mr. Old Wang leave. Dongzi stopped crying and turned back. Things had come and gone so quickly. He grinned widely at Zhou Huan. "Brother, now that we have money, what’s the first thing you want to do?"
"I haven't thought about it, but we must arrange a proper funeral for Old Song and the others first!"
"Oh. Then I want to buy good food!"
Zhou Huan stood up and looked toward Xiao He’s office window. Seeing her figure busy inside, he said to Dongzi, "Let’s go to the supermarket to buy things. Keep that money safe; don't lose it!"
"Okay!" Dongzi was ecstatic that he finally had a chance to spend money. He followed Zhou Huan toward the supermarket.
As soon as they entered the supermarket entrance, the female attendant bowed deeply to Zhou Huan and Dongzi. "Welcome! The entrance is on your right, and the exit is on your left!"
Zhou Huan led the way, with Dongzi trailing closely behind. He felt an unprecedented sense of emotion, mixed with the pent-up frustration of not having been able to spend freely for so long; his eyes were still swimming with unshed tears.
Dongzi’s expression made the attendant very uncertain about how to react. She could only follow the pair, gesturing as she walked. "Gentlemen, please pick up a shopping basket at the entrance!"
The attendant's enthusiasm slightly calmed Dongzi’s overwhelming emotion. Zhou Huan strode into the store, grabbing a basket. The first thing he wanted to buy wasn't something he desired to eat or use personally, but something that had been stuck in his mind for days—something he wanted but hadn't been able to purchase.
Following Zhou Huan, Dongzi gradually regained his composure. He asked softly, "Brother, can I buy anything here?"
Zhou Huan was solely focused on what he wanted to find. He gave Dongzi a brief reply, "Buy whatever you want. I need to find one specific thing!"
"Ah!" Dongzi responded simply, then ran off to the food section to buy a large bottle of liquor first, before abandoning Zhou Huan to begin his shopping spree in the edibles aisle.
Meanwhile, Zhou Huan wandered slowly through the supermarket aisles, searching and searching, but failing to locate the item he needed. He was clearly becoming anxious, yet he diligently examined every product he passed.
Just as Zhou Huan was growing distressed, a gentle female voice reached his ears. "Sir, may I help you find something?"
Zhou Huan turned and carefully took in the woman who had approached him. She was slender with delicate features and of medium height, looking perfectly suited in the standard supermarket uniform. A faint, cucumber-like fragrance, likely from perfume, drifted into Zhou Huan's nostrils. This saleswoman wore only light makeup, yet her natural beauty was incredibly soothing.
"Oh, Miss, I’m looking for something, but I can’t seem to find it!"
"If you tell me what product you’re looking for, I can help you locate it!"
Zhou Huan initially hesitated, but after thinking it over, he explained, "I’m looking for a ceramic mug with flowers painted on it—it must have a white background!"
"That should be in the housewares section." The saleswoman immediately pointed the way for Zhou Huan. "It’s over there; walk straight to the end of this aisle, and the cups and tea sets will be on your left."
Zhou Huan looked in the direction she indicated, then hurried over. When he reached the spot, the shelves of cups and tea sets were truly a dazzling array, featuring every kind of floral design imaginable: peonies, azaleas, camellias—each cup was exquisite.
