Wang Qingchen returned from school and immediately heard from Caiyun about the old man's visit earlier that day. Worried that the ancestral home might be hatching some new scheme, Wang Qingchen rushed off to ask Old Man Wang Youfu about the purpose of his visit.
After listening to what Wang Youfu relayed about the elder's words that day, Wang Qingchen couldn't help but muse that the old man, after so many failed attempts, was finally learning to change his strategy. He must have put considerable thought into this visit; look how he was playing the card of familial affection this time!
Wang Youfu had been swayed by the elder's words and was certainly going to devise a way to support the main branch of the family. Frankly, Wang Qingchen didn't care much about helping out relatives, but if the recipients were a couple like Wang Youliang and Tian Shi, who only thought about how to enrich their own pockets with other people's belongings rather than earning their own wealth, Wang Qingchen felt utterly incapable of accepting it. He realized he needed to devise a foolproof plan, one that wouldn't allow them to entangle him, lest he accidentally end up letting his own assets become theirs instead of achieving the intended goal of support.
“Father, since you've already agreed to Grandfather's request to help Uncle's family, shouldn't we think of a secure method? We don't want things to turn ugly for both families if something goes wrong,” Wang Qingchen cautioned.
“Yes, your father is thinking about that too. I don't know what your grandfather is thinking, always wanting me to support your uncle’s family. We are barely looking after ourselves. By the time our house is built, we might not have much money left, and then we’re supposed to offer support!” Wang Youfu shook his head as he spoke.
Wang Qingchen thought to himself that his father was clearly swayed by the elder and was now suddenly realizing their own lack of funds. He pouted slightly, “Father, we may not have much money right now, but we will in the future. This time, Boss Xue came to Qingshan Town looking for me because a newly cultivated pot of flowers was dying, and he wanted me to try and save it. If I succeed, there will definitely be a generous reward. Then, we can set up a shop—I’ve already thought about it, opening a mill would be perfect. Once our mill is running, helping Uncle’s family won't be difficult, right? And we don’t even have to restrict it to just Uncle; Eldest Cousin and Second Cousin are both idle at home! Both of them are honest lads, and helping them is helping Uncle! Grandfather won't say a word about that either.”
“Really? Boss Xue has work for you again? Is it another dying flower? Are you sure you can save this one?” Wang Youfu sounded a bit worried. It wasn't just Wang Youfu; Yang Shi and the others also doubted Wang Qingchen possessed any secret skills. Last time, saving the flower was pure luck, but luck isn't something one can count on every time.
“It should be fine,” Wang Qingchen was quite confident in his Space.
“Have you seen the flower? Did Boss Xue already give it to you?” Wang Youfu asked, puzzled. Last time, he only heard that Boss Xue had invited Wang Qingchen to dinner; he hadn't seen him bring back any flower.
Almost letting the secret slip, Wang Qingchen instantly jolted: “Uh… the flower is still with Boss Xue. I was originally going to bring it back last time, but I had too many things, and it was inconvenient to carry, but I did look at it, and it should be salvageable.”
“So that’s how it is. But you are studying now, how can you have time to care for a flower? Why don't you bring the flower back, and we can look after it for you?” Wang Youfu suggested. He was still concerned about Wang Qingchen’s claim that he could save the flower. He hardly believed a child who didn't even know how to farm understood anything about floriculture.
“It’s fine, Father. I didn’t spend much effort on the last one, and didn’t I still save it?” Wang Qingchen was full of confidence.
“Qingchen, this time is different from last time. Why is Boss Xue seeking you out again this time? Isn't it because you saved his flower previously? But you must know that you might not have that same luck this time. If you can't save this one, Boss Xue will surely realize you don't have any special knack for growing flowers here, that it was all luck, and he won't come to you again in the future,” Wang Youfu said sternly.
When Wang Qingchen heard this, he realized everyone assumed his success with the flower was due to luck. Although he had previously hoped people would attribute it to luck, the situation was different now. How could he explain to Wang Youfu that last time wasn't luck? He absolutely couldn't reveal his Space.
Wang Qingchen thought for a moment: “Father, I don't know why I'm so sure I can help Boss Xue save that flower. I just know it. Father, could it be that I was a flower farmer in a past life, which is why I’m so familiar with nurturing plants…”
Wang Youfu was so startled by Wang Qingchen that he quickly covered his mouth, “You child, how can you say such things carelessly? What do you mean, a flower farmer in a past life? Can you see things from a past life? Don't ever say such things again, understand? Lest people think you’re a monster and call a Daoist priest to exorcise you.”
Wang Qingchen pulled away the hand Wang Youfu used to cover his mouth. “Father, I was just saying. How could I know about a past life? But I am very familiar with nurturing flowers; I just know I can save that flower. What do you think is the reason?”
Wang Youfu didn't know the reason either. He didn't suspect Wang Qingchen was lying; after all, if the flower wasn't saved by luck, what was it saved by? Wang Qingchen’s explanation sounded the most plausible.
“Father, do you think maybe I’m what people call a child prodigy? It’s just that others are brilliant at academics, while I am brilliant at growing flowers?” Wang Qingchen asked with feigned excitement.
Wang Youfu paused, and it was true. It wasn't impossible. If other people’s children were naturally gifted readers, why couldn't his child be naturally gifted at cultivating flowers? Thinking this, Wang Youfu’s gaze towards Wang Qingchen changed. This was no ordinary child; this was a God of Wealth! However, this matter absolutely could not be revealed to others. In fact, someone already knew—Boss Xue had made the same guess about Wang Qingchen. Wang Qingchen himself had stumbled upon this reason by accident, and for now, it seemed to be a very useful explanation.
Wang Youfu cleared his throat. “Qingchen, you must never let anyone know that you are so good at growing flowers, do you understand? If word gets out, bad people might capture you and lock you up, forcing you to plant flowers all day long.”
Wang Qingchen felt an urge to roll his eyes. It seemed that whether in his past life or this one, adults used the same few tricks to scare children. Unfortunately, he couldn't show disdain, so he could only pretend to be frightened: “Father, I understand. I will definitely not tell anyone.”
Wang Youfu nodded with deep satisfaction upon hearing this.
Wang Qingchen looked at Wang Youfu, suddenly remembering that this was not the original purpose of his visit. He quickly took out the diagram of the courtyard house he had drawn the night before and spread it out before Wang Youfu. “Father, this is what I drew last night. If our house is built like this, won’t it look beautiful?”
Wang Youfu was still immersed in the beautiful fantasy of his child being a God of Wealth when Wang Qingchen’s call snapped him awake from his daydream.
Looking at the blueprint Wang Qingchen had unfolded, the layout was actually quite good. However, judging by Wang Qingchen’s drawing, just building the house would likely cost nearly forty taels, considering the two-courtyard siheyuan Wang Qingchen had sketched.
Wang Qingchen pointed at the drawing: “Father, this is the main gate, this is the first courtyard. I was thinking of sectioning off a part inside, where the cattle shed, pigsty, and so on can be. Also, we can string a line here for drying clothes. Then, this side is the main hall. Passing through the hall is the second courtyard. The center part is the main room, used as the bedroom, and the sides are wing rooms, all connected by covered corridors and latticed doors. In the open central area, we can dig a well right here, and perhaps plant a few fruit trees or some flowers. We could even get a stone table and some stools; then Mother and the others wouldn't always have to stay indoors to do embroidery…”
Wang Youfu was momentarily stunned by his son’s detailed explanation, but he had to admit that his son’s arrangement looked excellent. If it were built exactly as described, the villagers would surely be envious.
Wang Qingchen spoke for a long time, and seeing Wang Youfu remain silent, he felt a little uneasy. “Father, what do you think of my layout?”
After a while, Wang Youfu finally nodded. “Good. I think it’s quite nice. I’ll ask the builders when the time comes if they can manage this design. If they can, we’ll build it this way.”
Wang Qingchen was in a good mood seeing his father so agreeable and immediately began thinking about the interior furnishings once the house was complete. He realized he needed to work hard to earn money; comfort couldn't be achieved without wealth.
That evening, Wang Qingchen secretly entered his Space again. The newly cultivated flower showed signs of reviving, but the seeds hadn't stirred yet. Wang Qingchen dug out the seeds buried in the soil and replanted them. While planting, a sudden spark of inspiration hit him: Would the soil from the Space retain its magical properties if taken outside? If so, he wouldn't need to hide his gardening efforts in the future; he could just take some of the Space soil outside and nurture plants there too!
With this thought, Wang Qingchen began planning. He needed to conduct a proper experiment. Tomorrow, he would buy some flowerpots, then excavate a few samples of every seed, place them outside along with the Space soil, and see if they would sprout.
Thus, the next day after school, Wang Qingchen asked Li Yuntai and the others to help him buy about ten flowerpots. He had each of them carry three or four pots to his house, while he himself made an excuse about going to fetch the flower and not returning with them.
Li Yuntai and the others wanted to accompany Wang Qingchen to collect the flower, but Wang Qingchen realized that with them around, it would be difficult to retrieve the flower from his Space. So, he shook his head. “Why don't you all wait for me outside the town? I’ll catch up with you shortly.”
Li Yuntai and the others thought that made sense, so they headed out to the edge of town first.
Wang Qingchen went to Boss Xue’s residence and slipped into an inconspicuous alley beside the building to retrieve the flower from his Space. He exited through the other end of the alley and then made his way out toward the town's outskirts.
