For nearly half a month, although Lin Luo lived a leisurely life, he wasn't idle. In preparation for the impending chaos, he once again revamped Fuyuki City. Besides significantly expanding the hidden channel, a new creature called the "Horned Worm" was introduced.
This Horned Worm functioned much like the system of aerial circuits deployed by Accelerator throughout Academy City, primarily serving a surveillance role. However, in nature, the Horned Worm was far superior to the aerial circuits.
These Horned Worms were colorless and odorless; they were entirely transparent and emitted no aura or energy whatsoever, blending perfectly into the air, rendering them undetectable by anyone and impervious to destruction by any force. Lin Luo scattered them throughout every corner of Fuyuki City's hidden and physical channels, allowing him to effortlessly monitor the entire city's situation.
After all, if too many powerful individuals were in Fuyuki City, chaos was inevitable. While Aya Shameimaru was an excellent scout, relying solely on her was clearly insufficient. The existence of these Horned Worms greatly expanded Lin Luo's field of vision, enabling him to react far more swiftly to any potential unforeseen events.
Take the present moment, for instance. It was precisely thanks to these Horned Worms that Lin Luo saw the white-haired girl emerging from the Fuyuki subway station the very first moment. Although she appeared to be just an ordinary human girl on the surface, any target noticed by the Horned Worms that triggered an alert could hardly be considered ordinary.
The Horned Worms spread across the city observed countless things: someone dropping a $Kira$ cake and losing everything down to their underwear; someone helping an old lady cross the street only to be extorted; high schoolers engaging in illicit activities in the bushes; middle schoolers visiting abortion clinics. There were even elementary schoolers kissing publicly... But Lin Luo paid no mind to such trivialities. Thus, all information transmitted by the Horned Worms underwent self-filtering; only information regarding targets and events possessing a mysterious quality entered his view.
And this white-haired girl before him was quite special. Although Lin Luo didn't immediately recognize her identity, once those delinquent youths attempting to approach her collapsed, and he saw the spider tattoo flash, he knew exactly who she was.
Originally, whenever a powerful being used mystical power within Fuyuki City, they would be automatically drawn into the hidden channel. This was partly to facilitate their battles more conveniently and partly to protect ordinary citizens. However... there was one type of mystery that, even when used, would not draw the practitioner into the hidden channel: the passive mystery.
The reason those delinquents collapsed wasn't because the girl did anything to them; it was merely because they were instinctively deterred by her presence. If one approached the girl ordinarily, even brushing past her, this passive mystery would not activate. But if they approached with malice, even if she herself wasn't aware or held no intent to attack, the higher mystery she possessed would release an instinctive deterrence, repelling those with ill intent.
To put it plainly, the powerful beings "invited" to this city by Lin Luo were restricted from actively attacking others within the city. But if someone foolishly provoked trouble, they were courting death themselves... This, in a way, contributed to social peace.
Yet, instinctive deterrence is an exceedingly high-level mystery. While it might be useless against those wielding immense power—failing to deter them but potentially possessing a one-hit kill capability against the weak or ordinary—it is not something everyone can possess... much like the Conqueror's Haki, only appearing in one out of a million people.
In the Nasuverse alone, Lin Luo had previously only seen three beings possessing instinctive deterrence: Gaia, Alaya, and (Shugetsu). Even the Magus Killers, the Twenty-Seven Ancestors, and Heroic Spirits did not possess it.
However, compared to this white-haired girl, Shugetsu's instinctive deterrence was slightly weaker, while Gaia's and Alaya's were significantly stronger. In other words, the white-haired girl was stronger than Shugetsu but weaker than Gaia and Alaya.
Considering the three of them—one an Outer God (UO), two the Counters of Mystery—her power level falls between those two. Combined with the spider tattoo on her arm, her true identity becomes glaringly obvious.
Mercury... only the great spider whose terror spread throughout the Church and the Twenty-Seven Ancestors could possess such strength.
Yet, what Lin Luo never expected was... the Mercury Great Spider transforming into a petite, white-haired loli. What kind of dramatic development was this?
It seems everything can be given a 'moe' transformation, doesn't it?
With complex emotions swirling, Lin Luo watched the every move of the Mercury Little Spider... The sudden collapse of several delinquents naturally drew attention. When the surrounding crowd rushed forward to check, they found the youths had already stopped breathing, leading to immediate murmurs and shock.
Soon after, police cars and ambulances arrived to cordon off the scene and conduct inquiries. However, none of this concerned the Mercury Little Spider. With a slightly naive expression, she calmly left the station, and the police did not stop her.
After all, many people had witnessed the scene; when the delinquents fell, she hadn't even moved a hand. How could this homicide possibly be linked to her? Only a few onlookers were surprised by the little girl's composure.
But how could they know that if this Mercury Little Spider intended to kill, she wouldn't even need to blink, let alone move a muscle?
After leaving the station, the Mercury Water Spider wandered aimlessly through the streets. The human city was full of novelty for her, having lived in South America for so long. Although she had visited many cities along her journey, she had been under constant pursuit almost the entire time, leaving her no mood to observe. Now that no one was chasing her, she couldn't suppress her curiosity, looking left and right along the street, her eyes noticeably brighter.
Fortunately, her instinctive deterrence only inflicted damage upon those harboring ill will; otherwise, how many people would have died during this walk!
Theoretically, non-humans like the Mercury Little Spider, who had sequestered themselves for many years, shouldn't understand basic human common sense. But that theory only applied to ordinary people. At least, from Lin Luo's observation, although this Mercury Little Spider was a bit slow, her behavior was flawless. If one didn't know her identity, they would never guess she was the most terrifying entity among the Twenty-Seven Ancestors.
Lin Luo could understand this situation. Just like a thousand years ago, when Gaia, originally just a consciousness, assumed human form, she immediately absorbed all human knowledge, becoming more humanized than humans themselves. This was clearly related to Gaia's inherent abilities.
If Gaia possessed such an ability, other planets must have similar ones. As the spokesperson and strongest enforcer of a planet, it wasn't strange for a UO to possess the ability of Mystery Deterrence.
After watching for a while and finding no unusual behavior from the Mercury Water Spider, Lin Luo stopped paying attention, murmuring to himself, "Although I didn't have high expectations initially, I didn't think the first visitor to Fuyuki City would be a UO-level entity. That Arthur kid is quite capable... I suppose I can look forward to what happens next."
To be honest, although he had entrusted this task to Arthur, Lin Luo didn't believe Arthur could easily lure beings like the Twenty-Seven Ancestors without the use of violence—at most, Magicians, Church members, or Dead Apostles with certain abilities. After all, most of the Twenty-Seven Ancestors were either hermits or possessed absolutely no traceable information.
Under such circumstances, even if he went himself, the results might not have been great.
However, in less than a week, even a troublesome entity like ORT appeared in Fuyuki City, leading Lin Luo to realize he had underestimated Arthur somewhat. Since he could achieve this level of success, there must be several very intelligent individuals within Arthur's think tank.
Lin Luo pondered this just as the door was suddenly pushed open. Sanae poked her head in from outside, her expression visibly sullen. "Great Loser, someone is looking for you."
"Who is looking for me?" Lin Luo asked, standing up.
"An unfamiliar girl," Sanae replied, though the look she gave Lin Luo was laced with intense contempt as she spoke.
"See that? That's my charm. Even staying home all day, girls come knocking on my door wanting to embrace me," Lin Luo said proudly, completely ignoring the contempt in Sanae's eyes. He walked over to Sanae, and before she could retort, he playfully tapped her on the head. "And stop calling me Great Loser, or I'll make you lose your virginity instead."
"Loser to your sister!" Sanae snapped angrily.
"I don't have a sister," Lin Luo smiled slightly, continuing to tease her. "Why don't you become my sworn little sister?"
"Who would want that!"
"You, of course. Come on, sworn sister, go greet our guest with me." With that, Lin Luo waved his hand grandly and stepped out first.
"I am not your sworn sister!" Sanae roared behind him.
"No, no. When there's trouble, you're the sister to rely on; when there's no trouble, you're the one to handle things," Lin Luo explained sagely. "From this saying, you can tell a sworn sister is a very important role, and from my observation, among everyone here, you are the most suitable for this role. Others are either too old or lack the right temperament; only you are the most perfect candidate for a sworn sister."
"Really?" Sanae paused slightly.
Lin Luo nodded solemnly. "Personal attendant or sworn sister—which do you choose?"
"Sworn sister, of course!" Sanae replied without hesitation.
Satisfied with successfully tricking someone into becoming his sworn sister, Lin Luo arrived at the hotel lobby a moment later. When he saw the girl standing at the entrance, he was somewhat surprised. (To be continued) RQ
