A certain man from Shanxi possessed astonishing natural strength, having never studied any form of combat arts, yet numerous martial masters who challenged him were utterly defeated.

On one occasion, as this man passed through the Central Plains, he sparred with a young Shaolin disciple. Defeated and humiliated, the disciple fled back to the monastery to seek his master's aid. The assembled monks then prepared a feast to formally invite the Shanxi man, intending to reclaim their honor.

The man arrived as arranged. The monks presented him with dried fruits, which turned out to be a plate of walnuts.

The shells of the walnuts were hard, making them difficult to eat.

The man casually picked up a single nut, extended his index finger, and gave it a light tap. The walnut cracked open immediately.

The assembled monks were greatly alarmed by this display. Their expressions instantly became respectful, and they dared not act presumptuously. They treated the man to fine wine and exquisite dishes. After he had drunk and eaten his fill, they politely escorted him on his way.
