Whenever he gathered with friends, he would invite deities to descend and join their festivities.

One day, a friend observed a stretch of white cloud in the sky and spontaneously composed an upper couplet: "White jade like mutton fat across the heavens." He then asked the channeled spirit to provide the corresponding lower couplet.

The spirit replied, "For the lower couplet, you must ask Old Dong from the south of the city."

The friend assumed the spirit had exhausted its wisdom and was merely offering a casual deflection.

Later, when the friend traveled south of the city on an errand, he arrived at a place where the earth was a brilliant red, like cinnabar, which greatly surprised him.

An old man nearby was tending to his pigs, and the friend immediately sought his counsel.

The old man stated, "This is Pig-Blood Red Clay ground."

The friend was astonished. "Pig-Blood Red Clay ground! Isn't that the perfect lower couplet?" He then inquired about the old man's name, to which he replied, "My name is Old Dong."
