General Li of Jiaozhou acquired two Black men, their skin as dark as ink. Both men possessed thick soles, allowing them to walk on the blades of sharp knives without sustaining any injury. Furthermore, they were skilled dancers, moving with a lightness that was truly a delight to behold. General Li procured concubines for the two men, and from these unions, children were born with skin as white as snow. The servants, whispering amongst themselves, often joked, “The children surely cannot be theirs.” Hearing this, a seed of doubt was planted in the hearts of the two men. Each, in turn, killed his own child and split the bones open to examine them. The bones were as black as charcoal, proving indeed that they were their own flesh and blood. Having mistakenly slain their own offspring, the two men were consumed by overwhelming remorse.
