Li Jilin had once served as the magistrate of Yuanjiang County. Upon taking office, he was utterly astonished to find the yamen courtyard teeming with cats and dogs.
His subordinates quickly explained, "These are the local folk, come to pay their respects to your esteemed presence, my Lord."
Before the explanation was fully finished, the multitude of cats and dogs transformed in a flash, reverting to human form, bowing in unison, and departing without lingering.
One day, Li Jilin was attending an appointment outside the city, seated within his sedan chair, when one of the bearers sighed mournfully and said, "My Lord, I am taken ill and must request leave."
Li Jilin denied the request. The bearer offered no further argument, but instead broke into a run, quickly reaching the marketplace to find a certain old man for treatment. The old man took his pulse and declared, "Indeed, you are afflicted."
He reached out, grasping the man's skin, kneading and rubbing it up and down. As he reached the calf, a large swelling was revealed. The old man took a dagger, slit the skin and flesh, and extracted a small stone from the lump, stating, "Your ailment is cured."
The bearer was overjoyed, running back and forth, finding himself genuinely light and hale.
The customs of Yuanjiang County were exceedingly strange. Some residents possessed arcane arts, wherein they could lie down and have an arm detach and fly out, invisibly pilfering the possessions of others without the owner ever being aware.
Should the owner chance to detect the theft and grasp the errant arm firmly, the thief would inevitably suffer a crippled limb, never again able to commit such wicked deeds.
