A certain man from Jining chanced upon a remote temple in the wilderness. There, he saw a monk catching lice under the sun, a gourd dangling from his wooden staff, looking much like a traveling peddler of medicine.
The man inquired, "Venerable Monk, do you perhaps sell fangzhong medicine?"
The monk replied, "I do. The weak become strong, the small become large. Take it, and you shall see immediate results, instant efficacy." As he spoke, he opened the gourd and produced a pill the size of a grain of sorghum. The man was overjoyed and bought the pill, swallowing it down. After roughly the time it takes to eat half a meal, his lower regions swelled dramatically, increasing by a third. Still consumed by insatiable greed, he watched as the monk rose to relieve himself, and seized the opportunity to secretly pour two more pills from the gourd, swallowing them both at once.
In an instant, he felt his skin beginning to ache as if it would split, his tendons and sinews spasming. In moments, his neck shrank and his back hunched, rendering him crippled. Yet, his lower body continued to grow wildly. He was frantic, yet utterly helpless.
Before long, the monk returned and was greatly alarmed. "Patron must have stolen my medicine pills." He quickly fetched an antidote and gave it to the man to ingest, only then nullifying the drug's effect.
The man then undressed to gaze upon himself. He saw that his lower parts were as thick and long as his own thigh, filling him with profound regret. He stumbled back home, but due to the drastic change in his appearance, even his own parents could not recognize him. From that day on, he became a wastrel, reduced to begging on the streets daily—a sight many people have witnessed.
