A hunter from Guangdong ventured into the mountains to trap beasts, his bow and arrows his only companions. As he traversed the dense woodland, a sense of weariness overcame him, and he leaned against a tree to take a brief nap. In his sleep, he was suddenly seized by an elephant's trunk and lifted high, certain that death was upon him.
Not long after, the elephant brought him to a thicket and gently set him down. It trumpeted several times, calling for its kin. In moments, a herd of elephants swarmed the area, fanning out to completely encircle the man. The first elephant, which had carried him, lay down near the tree, its long trunk tapping twice upon the trunk as if to say, "Please, ascend."
Trembling, the hunter scrambled up to the highest branches, concealing himself within the thick foliage. Before long, a Suanni lumbered into view beneath the tree, its gaze sweeping over the herd, clearly intending to select the fattest among them for a meal. The elephants quivered, rooted to the spot, all looking up toward the canopy as if silently pleading for the hunter’s intervention.
Understanding their distress, the hunter immediately drew his bow and loosed an arrow, felling the Suanni instantly. The entire herd dropped to their knees, bowing their heads in profound gratitude. The hunter slid down from the branches, and one elephant extended its trunk, carefully grasping the sleeve of his robe and placing him gently upon its broad back. Then, they moved swiftly through the undergrowth until reaching a dense patch of grass. The elephant used its massive feet to churn the earth, digging out a hollow pit that shimmered with a dazzling white light—it was filled, stem to tip, with tusks.
The hunter quickly unbuckled his sash, bundled the ivory tightly, and hoisted the weight onto his back, bidding the herd farewell as he began his journey home. The elephants escorted him right to the edge of the forest before finally turning back.
