When Magistrate Changshan Wang served as the county magistrate, for every case he judged, he ordered the convicted to pay a fine in butterflies, according to the severity of the crime. A thousand, sometimes ten thousand, butterflies would be released in the courtroom, fluttering like silk banners in the wind—a sight of indescribable beauty. Seeing this spectacle, Magistrate Wang would slam the table and laugh heartily.

That very night, Magistrate Wang dreamed that a woman, clad in opulent silks and possessing a lovely face, entered his chamber with measured steps. She declared, "Because of the tyranny you have wrought, many of my sisters perished prematurely. You must therefore suffer a consequence." With those words, she transformed into a butterfly and danced away.

The next day, Magistrate Wang was enjoying wine and leisure with his wife in his chambers. His wife held a white flower and playfully tucked it into her husband's hair. Just then, a servant announced the arrival of a superior official. Rushing out to greet him, Wang forgot to remove the flower. His superior spotted it and unleashed a torrent of abuse. Magistrate Wang’s face flushed crimson, and he retreated awkwardly. From that day forward, he never again dared to mistreat butterflies.

Yu Chongyin of Qingcheng County, known for his wild and uninhibited nature, once served as a judicial officer. One Lantern Festival night, Yu Chongyin led a donkey, entirely draped with fireworks, to the Prefect’s residence to pay a call. He announced, "Your Honor, I present to you a fire-donkey for your viewing pleasure." The Prefect, distraught because his son was suffering from smallpox, paid him no mind. Yu Chongyin insisted repeatedly until the Prefect finally relented and came out to receive him.

Yu Chongyin drove the donkey into the courtyard and lit the fuses. Instantly, flames shot skyward in a dazzling, multicolored display. The startled donkey bolted everywhere, smashing flowerpots, shattering jars and vases, and recklessly charging into the master bedroom, sparks showering from its fiery hide. The Prefect's ailing son, confined to bed, was terrified by the commotion. Alas, by nightfall, the boy had drawn his last breath.

The Prefect was furious and prepared to impeach Yu. Fearing the consequences, Yu Chongyin immediately presented himself with thorns on his back to beg for mercy, enlisting colleagues to intercede on his behalf. The Prefect, considering that the act was not intentional, ultimately decided not to press the matter.
