Unlike his peers in the same class, Wang Zhuo was set to begin his internship early next semester. While others typically spent seven years at the university before a year of practical training, he had compressed his time on campus, finishing all required coursework in just four years.
Truthfully, whether he received that degree or diploma made little difference to him. With his current achievements, even a Nobel Prize in Medicine felt within easy reach; a mere diploma and a few certificates were as insignificant as a few flimsy pieces of paper by comparison.
The only reason he was still going through the motions was to draw a satisfying conclusion to his university life.
Walking along the tree-lined paths of the Medical University, gazing at the campus that had hosted nearly half of his four years, the thought that he would soon bid it farewell brought on a disorienting, dreamlike sensation.
Although he hadn't spent an excessive amount of time on campus, his feelings for the place remained genuine. The memories forged during his time here would surely linger long in his mind, ever-fresh.
Unconsciously, he found himself near the basketball court. Since it was the stressful final examination period, few people were playing today, and even fewer were watching.
The rhythmic thud of the ball, the shouts and cheers of the students—everything felt intimately familiar. Wang Zhuo stared, lost in thought, then gave a self-deprecating smile.
He supposed he could no longer step onto the court as just another player, sweating it out and savoring the thrill of competition, could he?
"Hey!"
"Coach Wang!"
Two young men jogged over, greeting Wang Zhuo enthusiastically.
"You two are here too? No classes today?" Wang Zhuo smiled and nodded to them. These were younger students from the Gene Medicine department, familiar basketball acquaintances.
"Just finished exams, came out to unwind," said the shorter student with a grin. "Haven't seen you around in a while. Aren't you going to play?"
Wang Zhuo chuckled dryly and shook his head. "Better not. I'd draw a crowd."
The two students laughed too. This 'crowd' was different from the usual one. When Coach Wang played before, people gathered to admire his brilliant skills; now, if he drew a crowd, they would be looking at the male lead from those scandalous photos.
"Right, you two graduate next year, correct?" Wang Zhuo inquired.
The taller student nodded. "We graduate on New Year's Day. We're on the four-and-a-half-year track."
"Have your internship placements been arranged?" Wang Zhuo asked with a gentle smile. "I have an opening at my place. If you're interested, you're welcome anytime."
What?! The two students were instantly struck down by this sudden stroke of fortune—receiving an offer from Coach Wang himself! Their luck was no less than winning five million in the lottery!
After catching their breath, the short one scratched his head and asked, "Are we good enough?"
Wang Zhuo looked at him with a half-smile. "Is your academic record poor?"
"Average..." the shorter student replied brightly.
Wang Zhuo heartily clapped him on the shoulder. "Average is fine. When the department provides internship placements, just select Dynasty, and I'll give you special consideration."
The two readily agreed, their hearts soaring higher than when they were accepted into this university three years prior. Wang Zhuo offered a few more words of encouragement before bidding them farewell and walking away.
"Oh my God, an internship at Dynasty! I never dared to dream of that!"
"Me neither! Dynasty only takes the absolute top students; they wouldn't even look twice at scrubs like us."
"If we perform well during the internship, we might even get hired..."
"I think the chances are high! Didn't Coach Wang say he'd look out for us?"
"Working at Dynasty—I never thought Zhu Weigang would see this day, haha!"
The two boys, energized as if injected with adrenaline, ran back to the court to retrieve their jackets, pulling out their phones to share the good news with their parents. Their families had already worried endlessly about securing good internship positions; now, all that politicking was unnecessary—they were getting into Dynasty!
What did working at Dynasty mean? It was the medical institution in the nation with the highest compensation, the best benefits, and the greatest future prospects. Almost every graduate in relevant fields considered it an honor to join Dynasty. If one could carve out a career there and earn employee incentive shares, they would become instantly wealthy overnight!
Before Dynasty existed, no one had heard of a domestic company where employees could take paid vacations to Hawaii or charter planes for trips to the Maldives, where housing was provided immediately upon signing the contract, and everyone bought a car within six months of starting work.
Even more incredible was that this company’s research and development products monopolized several of the world's most profitable sectors. In just three years since its founding, it had soared to become the most lucrative company globally, leaving technology conglomerates and internet giants far behind.
Leaving them in the dust, unrivaled!
But that wasn't all. What excited the two boys most was a slightly unreliable piece of gossip: the new product currently causing such a media frenzy, "God Loves Me," was supposedly the next big release from Dynasty. Rumor had it that the selling price would make one gasp, yet it was slated to become a basic benefit for all Dynasty employees—male and female alike—in the near future. To work at Dynasty meant wealth, status, dignity, and renown! Pride for oneself, pride for family, cheers from friends, and envy from classmates! Such an opportunity was priceless!
Wang Zhuo never suspected that his casual decision had altered the destinies of two people; just minutes after leaving the basketball court, he had already forgotten the matter.
To control life and death was one kind of power, but the ability to reshape someone’s entire life—was that not another form of authority?
As he approached his dormitory building, several heads peering down from the windows instantly snapped back, and Wang Zhuo looked up, feeling a mixture of amusement and helplessness.
It was Geng Bin and the others, waiting for him after his exams!
Sure enough, as Wang Zhuo turned the corner into the corridor upstairs, he saw five young men waiting outside his dorm room. They weren't making a racket, but waving cheerfully.
These vultures... Wang Zhuo chuckled internally and quickened his pace.
Once he opened the door and entered the room, the young men finally let loose. Since the corridor was crowded and full of prying eyes, making high-profile moves was ill-advised given Wang Zhuo’s current situation.
After everyone settled down, Zheng Peng went to slice a watermelon, and Geng Bin selected the best-looking piece, presenting it to Wang Zhuo.
Wang Zhuo accepted it without ceremony and took a bite. Sensing a subtle shift in the atmosphere, he became instantly alert, already formulating a plan.
"Um... Boss," Geng Bin said with a sheepish smile, "I need to admit a mistake."
"Spit it out. What's going on?" Wang Zhuo looked at him, having already guessed the cause.
Geng Bin scratched his head and offered a fawning smile. "A few days ago, after a few drinks, I let slip something you strictly forbade us from revealing."
"You told these three?" Wang Zhuo surveyed the three students besides Geng Bin and Zheng Peng.
"Yes, yes, you see the situation clearly!" Geng Bin nodded repeatedly. "Just these three, no one else."
The three students offered dry smiles and nods, their expressions slightly unnatural and tinged with anticipation.
Wang Zhuo gave a slight nod. "Explain how it happened."
Geng Bin recounted the events precisely, which mostly matched Wang Zhuo’s expectations, but one detail struck Wang Zhuo as profoundly astonishing and highly comical.
It turned out that a few days earlier, Geng Bin, Zheng Peng, and these three boys had gone out for drinks after playing basketball. Finding it insufficient, they brought two cases of beer back to the dorm to continue celebrating.
Since Dynasty Wuliang provided a safety net, no one became disorderly. However, heightened excitement was unavoidable—that was the point of drinking. Dynasty Wuliang only ensured there was no physical harm; if it removed the excitement too, what would be the point of drinking? The product wouldn't sell then.
In their excited state, one student named Liu Zhanfu suggested watching "adult features." Since the doctoral student dorms were mostly unsupervised, as long as they didn't disturb their neighbors, it was fine. The boys readily agreed. They took Liu Zhanfu’s laptop into the living room and had a group viewing.
Which recent film was the hottest? That was hardly a question. The answer was obviously the American series "God Loves Me" and the Japanese series "Miracle." Liu Zhanfu’s computer contained all the films from both series, so naturally, that’s what they watched.
Watching led to trouble. During the end credits of "Miracle 5," a preview for a new film appeared. Geng Bin suddenly pointed at a pile of fat men crushing a Japanese beauty on screen and yelled, "Isn't that Feilong [Fat Dragon]?"
Who was Feilong? Someone casually asked, assuming it was some well-known Japanese sleazy actor like Mao Zhu or Da Mu.
"Wang Zhuo's high school classmate!" Geng Bin, intoxicated, blurted out, exclaiming with the excitement of discovering a new continent, "So that kid is behind the Miracle series too!"
By the time he realized his slip, it was too late. Under intense questioning, interrogation, cajoling, and every form of pressure from Liu Zhanfu and the other two, the secret of "God Loves Me" and the "Miracle Series" was finally revealed.
If it had been any other group of guys, hearing this secret would only have resulted in wistful envy, forcing them to keep the massive gossip bottled up.
But Liu Zhanfu and the other two were long-time basketball buddies of Wang Zhuo, and their relationship was generally good. While not as close to Wang Zhuo as Geng Bin and Zheng Peng, they were still among Wang Zhuo’s few friends in college.
The three conferred. If it were any other matter, they might have been too embarrassed to ask Wang Zhuo for a favor. However, according to Geng Bin, the medicine that enhanced male performance still had an unknown release date, and the price would certainly be beyond the reach of ordinary people. For the sake of their own marital happiness, they absolutely had to ask Wang Zhuo to try it out!
"That's no problem. You should have had some last time anyway, but supplies were limited."
Since they were asking for a favor, Wang Zhuo decided to grant it fully, refusing to admit he had favored some over others. "The new batch has been produced. I’ll bring some over for you tomorrow."
Just as the three were about to cheer, Wang Zhuo quickly signaled for silence, asking Geng Bin with a wry smile, "Did you really see that pig Feilong in the new trailer?"
