In the long arc of evolutionary history, the undeniable truth of natural selection has forged distinct differences among individuals. Why is it that children born to the same couple vary so widely—some tall, some short, some stout, some slender, some gifted in 〖Movement〗 while others possess sharp cunning? It is precisely these individual variations that have ensured the survival of the fittest descendants, while the less adapted have gradually been culled, allowing humanity to evolve to its present advanced state.
However, modern technological advancements have neutered this process, steering the course of human evolution down an entirely different path. Take Wang Zhuo, for instance, who has only recently become an internationally recognized figure... On the podium, Professor Chang had once again strayed from his syllabus. Since his lectures were entirely theoretical, he felt free to ramble as he pleased in class.
Wang Zhuo had just slipped into the lecture hall through the back door with Geng Bin and taken a seat in the rear row when he heard Professor Chang mention his name, prompting an involuntary, wry smile.
“During the evolutionary process, exceptionally gifted individuals occasionally emerge, whose superior genes promote the progress of the entire race. But it’s not like that in the modern era. Let’s take Wang Zhuo. His abilities are exceptional, aren't they? Yet the law dictates he can only have one child, or if he marries an only child, he can only have two. This rule is a waste of humanity's most precious resource, a stumbling block hindering our progress.” Professor Chang passionately articulated his views from the podium. Wang Zhuo couldn't help but smile and nod; Old Chang’s words resonated perfectly with him!
At that moment, a female student raised her hand from the audience. “Professor, I don’t agree with your point of view.” Professor Chang casually pointed at her and said, “You are free to disagree, but if your objection stems from a 〖Moral〗 standpoint, then perhaps you shouldn't speak.”
To everyone’s surprise, the young woman declared loudly, “No, I am arguing from an evolutionary perspective as well. I believe if people like him are allowed to consume excessive social resources, it will impact the societal fairness established by law and 〖Morality〗, leading to widespread instability across human society. Such subversive turmoil could bring a catastrophic disaster upon all mankind, perhaps by inciting 〖Movement〗 or even war.” An immediate uproar and burst of laughter swept through the lecture hall.
“Miss, you must be studying sociology, right?”
“This society has never been fair. Wake up, student. Which influential figure doesn't have multiple wives and concubines? They just hide it from us common folk.”
“I admit I’m jealous of Instructor Wang, but I think Professor Chang is right. A freak like Instructor Wang could indeed drive the development of all humankind, so letting him be a stud for a while wouldn't hurt.”
“I think this girl’s point is also valid. Stability is paramount. If the Earth is destroyed, what’s the point of evolving better?” “Sister, stop arguing for the sake of arguing! We’re discussing whether Instructor Wang should marry more wives. Do you really think such a trivial matter could cause the destruction of the Earth?”
“Sigh… my He Ye…”
“Wake up, buddy. Even without Instructor Wang, He Ye has nothing to do with you anyway.”
The scene grew quite lively until Professor Chang tapped the electronic whiteboard eraser lightly on the desk, bringing quiet.
“What the young woman said is both correct and incorrect,” Professor Chang smiled gently. “An ordered society is indeed a necessary condition for human development. But everyone must remember that a system of polygamy, or granting certain allowances to those who make outstanding contributions to society, is also a form of order. We can reference the Arab nations, where polygyny is practiced, and it hasn't triggered any catastrophic disasters.” A fresh wave of excitement swept through the students. Professor Chang was Professor Chang; his debating skills were truly second to none, far beyond our reach!
“Professor, I have a question!” A bespectacled young man with a pale, clean-cut face suddenly raised his hand.
“Go ahead,” Professor Chang nodded at him.
“My question is this,” the spectacled man spoke fluently: “Didn’t you teach us before that the reason Black and White men excel over Yellow race men in certain masculine characteristics is because their evolution is less advanced—they’ve only just moved past the stage where whoever can penetrate deeper gets to father the most children? Isn't Wang Zhuo in the same situation?” Whoosh! A sudden, profound silence fell over the hall, both front and back. The question was sharp and audacious, stunning everyone into stillness!
Even Wang Zhuo looked astonished, truly not expecting such a question to be raised for classroom discussion. Had he become a specimen for academic research?
On the podium, Professor Chang stroked the stubble on his chin. Whenever he did that, everyone knew he was deep in thought, and low murmurs began to rise from the audience.
“Who is that kid?” Wang Zhuo nudged in the direction of the spectacled student with his chin.
“You don’t know him?” Geng Bin sighed wryly and replied quietly, “He’s some guy from the Genetics department. A bit of an idiot. Don’t let his decent appearance fool you; his brain has a few gaps. Otherwise, who would dare discuss you so openly?”
“No wonder…” Wang Zhuo nodded with a wry smile, thinking to himself that it made sense. Even though he hadn't been around campus much, his residual influence remained. Only someone with loose screws would dare say such a thing without fearing a beating afterward!
On the podium, Professor Chang finally spoke, slowly saying, “That is a good question you posed.” Great, another fearless idiot who doesn't fear a beating. Wang Zhuo was utterly speechless!
“However, I do not agree with your view, and I have a different interpretation.” Professor Chang smiled and continued, “I just explained to everyone that this is called individual variation. While I haven't seen what Wang Zhuo’s parents look like, I believe he was born by combining the superior genes from both parents. Since even full siblings can have tall and short, fat and thin variations, it stands to reason that that particular aspect will also have long and short, thick and thin variations. Therefore, I believe Wang Zhuo is simply the tall one among many children.”
The questioning student was still dazed, but the rest of the class erupted in laughter.
“Professor, you’re being biased.”
“Just say he’s exceptionally gifted, why complicate it? Haha.”
“Exactly. Why is it that foreigners are sexually promiscuous, but Wang Zhuo is genetically superior? Professor, you can't just swap concepts like that.” “I’ll whisper this: after seeing those pictures, I always feel Wang Zhuo is a genetic mutation. Oh my god, how big is it…” “You’re the one who’s a genetic mutation! Don’t slander my idol!”
Geng Bin was shaking with laughter, bent over double, clutching his stomach. If this were normal class discussion, he wouldn't have laughed this hard, but with the subject himself sitting right next to him, catching a glimpse of the magnificent expression beneath Wang Zhuo’s glasses made him nearly split his sides!
“In the two months I haven’t been at school, has he taught class like this every day?” Wang Zhuo muttered quietly, adjusting the brim of his cap.
Geng Bin kept chuckling silently, shaking his head then nodding. “It’s more lively today because there are more girls.”
Wang Zhuo was speechless. Looking at Professor Chang, who remained composed on the podium, he truly didn't know what to say about the man. He could tell Old Chang was protective of him, but he couldn't stop using him as a teaching example—it was almost becoming his signature teaching style!
“Ahem,” Professor Chang cleared his throat and smiled. “Today we have several new students I haven't seen before, and some girls too. I don't know if you officially enrolled in my course, but it doesn't matter; your presence alone honors Old Chang. However, the topic I’m about to introduce might not be comfortable for some of the ladies. So, everyone, feel free to leave anytime if you don't want to listen; I won't be offended.”
What was Old Chang about to say? Everyone straightened up, curious and ready to listen.
Just then, someone quietly pushed open the back door of the classroom and slipped in stealthily. Wang Zhuo subtly turned his head to see four young women. Geng Bin also spotted the four and immediately winked and gestured towards Wang Zhuo. Wang Zhuo nodded slightly; two of those girls were the ones Geng Bin had introduced to him—Dimple Shan, and the newly crowned Campus Belle, Sister Rong! After He Ye took a leave of absence, who would succeed her as the Medical University's most beautiful student became a widespread topic of discussion among the male students. The result was that the freshman, Sister Rong, unhesitatingly took He Ye’s place, and with her cheerful and gracious demeanor, she possessed a rare genuine quality that the calculating He Ye once lacked.
“Hey, what was her name again?” Wang Zhuo signaled to Geng Bin and asked quietly.
“You mean Dai Shan?” Geng Bin whispered back.
Wang Zhuo shook his head: “No… oh, oh, I remember now.” How could he not remember? He constantly heard people mentioning “Sister Rong, little Sister Rong” in QQ groups and on the school’s BOC (Bulletin Board System). Over time, Wang Zhuo had forgotten her original name, but now, recalling carefully, he remembered the character given to her name by an ill-reputed Taoist—a character meaning ‘contain,’ with a mouth radical beside it! He couldn't help but grin meaningfully. Geng Bin instantly understood why he was laughing and joined in with a wicked smile. Just looking at the name Rong Xue-something, without even seeing what the real person looked like, was enough to leave a profound impression!
Up on the podium, Professor Chang surveyed the four newly arrived girls and casually asked, “The main lecture content is finished; this is the nonsense time now. Are you staying to listen?” The four first-year students looked at each other awkwardly. Dai Shan, blushing, managed to say, “Yes, we’ll listen.” After all, this was a graduate seminar, and they had snuck in to audit; the professor had every right to send them away.
Wang Zhuo expected Old Chang to repeat his earlier warning about the uncomfortable nature of the upcoming talk, but Old Chang seemed to have no such intention. He cleared his throat, preparing to speak. Wang Zhuo and Geng Bin exchanged knowing smiles. It seemed this old man indeed got more excited the more girls were present; with Rong Xue-something, the number one campus beauty, sitting in his class, he clearly didn't want to scare her off!
