Du Weng, a man from Yishui, sat beneath a wall after leaving the marketplace, waiting for his companions. Suddenly overcome with weariness, he drifted into a dream. In the vision, a bailiff, clutching official documents, seized him. He was taken to a yamen—a place he had never seen before. A man wearing a simple cloth cap emerged from within the office. Upon closer inspection, Du Weng recognized him: Zhang from Qingzhou, his old friend who had been dead for many years.
Zhang, startled to see Du Weng, asked, "Brother Du, how have you come to this place?" Du Weng replied, "I don't know why I was brought here; I was simply arrested." Zhang frowned thoughtfully. "Perhaps they took the wrong person. Don't worry, Brother; I will go make inquiries for you. Wait here for now and do not wander off. If you get lost, there will be no remedy." With that, he hurried away, but after a long time, he did not return.
As Du Weng began to feel bored, footsteps suddenly sounded. The same bailiff from before, still holding the writ, strode out quickly and said, "My apologies, we arrested the wrong person. We are releasing you now." Du Weng bid the bailiff farewell and started back toward home. Along the way, he encountered six or seven young women, each one exquisitely beautiful. Du Weng's heart soared with delight, and he trailed closely behind them, unable to tear himself away. They turned off the main road onto a narrow path. After barely ten steps, he heard Zhang shouting loudly from behind him, "Brother Du, where are you going?"
Enthralled by the beautiful women, Du Weng paid no heed. Soon, the women slipped through a small, unmarked door. Du Weng recognized it as belonging to Old Wang, the wine seller next door. Unconsciously, he stepped inside. Taking a quick look around, he realized with utter horror that he was standing in a pigsty, surrounded by no fewer than ten young piglets. Du Weng’s heart seized with terror. He looked down and saw that, somehow, he had been transformed into a pig, a mere beast.
Cold sweat poured down Du Weng’s body. Zhang's calls continued incessantly from behind him. In a panic, he began violently ramming his head against the wall. Then he heard someone say, "The little pig is crazy; it's having a seizure!" Du Weng focused his vision and found himself transformed back into a human again. He scrambled out the door. Zhang was waiting by the roadside, scolding him, "I repeatedly warned you not to run off, Brother. Why didn't you listen? You nearly caused a disaster." As he spoke, Zhang took Du Weng's hand and escorted him back to the bustling center of the market before turning and departing.
Du Weng awoke with a start, realizing he was leaning against the wall. When he returned, he questioned Old Wang, who confirmed that one of his piglets had indeed died that morning by banging its head against something.
