Dong Mo'an, Hanlin Academy Reader-in-Waiting, found his residence plagued by a fox spirit. Bricks and rubble rained down from above, as dense as hailstones. His family scrambled for cover, utterly exhausted by the nuisance. In desperation, they moved into the residence of Sima Sun Zuo Ting for temporary refuge, yet the fox spirit’s disturbances continued unabated, causing immense suffering.

One day during a break from court, he mentioned the matter to a colleague, who advised, "The Daoist Master Jiao Ming from the East of the Pass is currently residing in the Inner City. His sorcery is profound, and he excels at subduing demons and vanquishing devils. You should invite him to assist you."

Dong Mo'an was overjoyed at the news. He personally visited Daoist Master Jiao's residence to request his help in suppressing the demon. Jiao Ming readily agreed, writing out an amulet inscription with his own hand, instructing Master Dong to affix it to the wall. Alas, it proved entirely useless; the fox remained just as audacious, escalating its throwing of bricks and tiles.

With no other recourse, Master Dong had no choice but to ask Jiao Ming to intervene again. The Daoist Master became furious and personally arrived at the Dong residence to conduct a ritual. Soon, a giant fox was seen lying prostrate beneath the altar. The family, having suffered abuse for so long, saw the perpetrator exposed and were filled with uncontrollable rage. A serving maid stepped forward to strike it, but through some sorcery the fox employed, her blow failed, and she was instead afflicted, collapsing to the ground and expiring.

Seeing this, the Daoist sighed, "The fox spirit is rampant, and even I lack the absolute certainty of subduing it. How dare a frail woman like you provoke it so easily? Very well, since things have come to this, I shall borrow your body to converse with the fox spirit." Having spoken, he chanted an incantation, and the serving maid suddenly stood up, kneeling deeply on the ground.

The Daoist asked, "Fox spirit, where is your ancestral home?"

The maid spat out the fox's voice, "I was born in the Western Regions and moved to reside in the Capital City; I have been here for several hundred years."

The Daoist commanded, "The Capital City lies at the feet of the Son of Heaven; how can your kind remain here for long? You must depart swiftly."

The fox spirit pondered but offered no reply. The Daoist grew angry, slamming the table and cursing, "Do you dare defy my command? If you delay further, do not blame my Daoist arts for their mercilessness."

Hearing this, the fox spirit grew fearful, its expression showing alarm. It dared not disobey. The Daoist urged it to leave quickly, and before his words had even finished, the serving maid collapsed to the ground once more, only reviving after a long while. Shortly thereafter, four or five white foxes flashed into view along the eaves, rolling like balls, one following another, vanishing without a trace in the blink of an eye.

From that day forward, no strange occurrences ever troubled the Dong residence again.
