Though it was barely past the middle of the twelfth lunar month, Wang Zhuo was happier than if it were the New Year, because tonight he was finally going to get his wish: playing Dou Dizhu!
Earlier, while in the car, he had deliberately brought up playing Dou Dizhu to tease Guan Yingying, expecting a proper protest. Instead, Qi Fei had merely pressed her fingertips lightly against his waist. Knowing Qi Fei as well as he did, he understood immediately that this was an entirely ineffective resistance!
This meant that a protest of this mildness amounted to consent! Thrilling! Spending a delightful evening with a beautiful woman he adored was the pinnacle of male happiness, but spending it with two beautiful women—that joy, he calculated, must multiply by two!
When they passed the supermarket, Qi Fei and Guan Yingying hopped out to buy groceries. Siyuan noticed Wang Zhuo swaying his body contentedly, almost dancing to some inner rhythm, and couldn't help asking curiously, "What's got you so cheerful?"
Wang Zhuo, in excellent spirits, didn't hide anything. He grinned widely, "Tonight, both of them are sleeping with me. Two of them!"
Siyuan paused, then burst out laughing, "But you only have one bed! Two and one aren't really different, are they?"
"Hey! Now you're mistaken. The difference here is vast," Wang Zhuo quipped, offering an example. "Just imagine: you’re kissing me, and Meng Shengnan is watching right beside you. How would that feel?"
Siyuan only needed a moment to process this, and suddenly she understood completely! It was true, just as Instructor Wang had said; the action was the same, but having an audience entirely changed the experience!
"Then can I sneak a peek tonight?"
"No. If they find out, you’ll get a lecture!"
"I could use a camera to watch a live stream—they wouldn't notice then."
"A camera? Absolutely not. Qi Fei insists on the lights being off. You can't exactly turn on your camera's night vision, can you?"
As the two were chatting haphazardly, a sudden commotion erupted from the entrance of the supermarket.
Wang Zhuo swiftly activated his X-ray vision. He saw a short, stout young man who had just knocked over two security guards, clutching a women's handbag and sprinting outward. He was running toward the other side of the street, with two guards and a woman in athletic wear chasing behind him.
"Damn it all!"
Wang Zhuo cursed under his breath, threw open the car door, and bolted after them. Normally, he wouldn't bother with such petty trouble, but the bag the youth held was Qi Fei's!
As he passed the supermarket entrance, Qi Fei and Guan Yingying were just running out. Guan Yingying had good physical conditioning and could have joined the chase, but she had dressed up specifically today, wearing high heels, making pursuit impossible.
"Go, Wang Zhuo, go!"
"Wang Zhuo, be careful!"
One woman made a fist to cheer him on, while the other cupped her hands around her mouth like a megaphone to warn him.
Wang Zhuo kept running, easily flashing them a 'PK' hand gesture. In a blink, he overtook the two sluggish guards and was closing in on the woman leading the chase.
It was cold, the ground was slippery, and a fresh, moderate layer of snow had just fallen. Wang Zhuo dared not be careless. He engaged his X-ray vision, closely monitoring the ground beneath the snowpack to avoid slipping.
The purse-snatcher was running extremely fast, but the woman chasing him was marginally faster. Initially, she had shouted a few times—"Stop!" "Drop the bag!"—but when those proved ineffective, she lowered her head and pursued silently.
This stretch of sidewalk was narrow, bordered by a green belt and parked bicycles. The woman, running in the middle, perfectly obstructed Wang Zhuo's path, preventing him from gaining closer. Wang Zhuo ran while patting his pockets; unfortunately, he only found his phone. After a brief hesitation, he decided against throwing it.
In that moment of indecision, a situation suddenly developed ahead, right by the door of a cake shop. Beneath the fresh snow lay a patch of ice, about a meter wide, likely created by children playing and then covered. It was invisible.
The ice patch wasn't wide, and the thief managed to step cleanly over it. The woman, however, seemed less fortunate. Given her stride frequency, she was about to place her foot directly in the center of the ice.
"Watch out!" Wang Zhuo shouted a warning immediately, but the woman ahead didn't grasp the meaning of his alert and stepped right onto it.
Whoosh! Her soft-soled leather shoe easily swept away the layer of snow, as if stepping onto a slick mirror. The woman lost her balance and cried out as she pitched forward.
Even as he yelled "Watch out," Wang Zhuo pushed harder with his feet, trying to catch up and support her. Instead, he was tripped by her flailing foot as she fell, and he too lost his footing.
A cluster of bicycles, heavily laden with snow, was right next to them. If the woman fell onto them, the outcome was unpredictable. Wang Zhuo could have let his momentum carry him to the ground and then stood up to continue chasing the thief, but that would have been disastrous for the woman.
In less time than it takes to speak, Wang Zhuo knew he couldn't let a brave woman who tried to help get injured just to catch a thief. He shot out a long arm, grabbed the back of the woman's collar, yanked her forcefully toward his chest, twisted his body, and positioned his back toward the direction of her momentum, ending up sitting hard on his backside, splayed wide.
With his pull, the woman narrowly avoided a nasty fall onto the bicycles. Her arms flew open as if embracing him, and they crashed together!
"Ugh," Wang Zhuo groaned as the white athletic uniform pressed down, a soft yet powerful impact hitting his face.
If he hadn't braced himself, that impact would have sent the back of his head into a heated, hard contact with the ground!
"Thank you!"
The woman landed astride Wang Zhuo’s lower abdomen. Their posture in the snowy landscape resembled a wild coupling. She swung her right leg off him, glanced at the thief's receding back, shook her head helplessly, and extended her hand to Wang Zhuo.
Wang Zhuo smiled wryly as he took her hand, letting her pull him up. He brushed the snow off his backside and suddenly felt that the woman looked somewhat familiar.
Feeling his intense gaze, the woman returned his look and asked, "What is it?"
"Let me think," Wang Zhuo looked up at the sky, blinked a few times, and then his eyes suddenly lit up. He pointed at her. "You're An Qi, from the Criminal Investigation Unit!"
The woman before him was about 1.65 meters tall. Even in winter clothing, her athletic physique was evident. Her fair skin was slightly flushed from the intense sprint, and her full chest was still visibly rising and falling, making one eager to glimpse the scenery within.
"You know me?" An Qi looked surprised, scrutinizing Wang Zhuo from head to toe. She felt a faint sense of familiarity but couldn't recall where she had seen him or what his name was.
"Your hair turned white, I almost didn't recognize you," Wang Zhuo chuckled, glancing toward the direction the thief had fled. He told her, "I'll catch him. You should head back to the supermarket entrance and wait!"
"Hey—"
Just as An Qi was about to speak, Wang Zhuo was already sprinting ahead. Hearing her call, he only waved his hand without turning back.
It was already nine o'clock in the evening; the sky was dull gray, and there were few pedestrians on the street. The purse-snatcher had vanished. An Qi smiled wryly, having little hope that this young man, whose name she still couldn't recall, could catch the thief. She turned and headed back toward the supermarket.
For Wang Zhuo, finding a person on an empty city street was ridiculously easy.
Despite all the alleys, side streets, and shops, under the holographic scan of his X-ray vision, they all dissolved into faint, shallow-colored lines. Only living people formed vibrant, three-dimensional images, and whether near or far, everything appeared close at hand, perfectly clear.
At this moment, the scene before him looked like a shallow, colorful line drawing, like an electronic animation from a sketch. When he locked onto his target, all other human shapes turned into a single muted color. Only the thief, wearing a dark cap, remained a full-color image; not a single movement escaped Wang Zhuo’s sight.
At that moment, the thief had just entered a mall and was walking casually toward the public restroom area.
Wang Zhuo closed the distance using the shortest possible route, his speed steady. Just as the thief entered the restroom, Wang Zhuo emerged from the corner of the corridor on the opposite side.
Locking himself inside a stall, the thief unzipped his down jacket, took out the pink handbag, glanced inside, and chuckled lowly, "Hermès? This damn thing must be worth a few hundred! This bag alone could sell for a few hundred, right?"
Just as he was about to unzip it fully, an abrupt voice echoed from above him. "After an eight percent discount, it’s forty-six thousand. But this one was a gift from a business partner."
"Who?!" The thief looked up in terror. A size forty-two shoe sole, whistling through the air, slammed down onto his face, leaving a clear, deep imprint.
At the supermarket entrance, An Qi gave a slightly embarrassed smile to the victim, Qi Fei. "I'm sorry, I lost him."
"Thank you very much," Qi Fei nodded gratefully. "You run so fast; you almost caught him."
Guan Yingying, standing nearby, suddenly pulled out her phone, checked it, and said happily, "He sent a text—caught him. Wait for me where you are."
"Caught him?" An Qi was momentarily stunned. The thief was clearly experienced; he had already gotten away in this weather. How could he possibly have been found?
Only a few minutes later, a taxi pulled up across the street. The thief was shoved out first, collapsing onto the ground, refusing to stand. Wang Zhuo stepped out afterward, paid the fare, and dismissed the cab.
"I got your things back," he cheerfully handed the handbag back to Qi Fei, then turned to An Qi. "We have other things to do, so we won't be going to the police station to make a statement. You can handle this guy, Officer An."
"I'm not a police officer anymore," An Qi said with a wry smile, shaking her head. "It’s good you’re alright. Do whatever you want with this man. I'm leaving first."
With that, she waved goodbye to Qi Fei and walked back toward the supermarket, hands tucked in her pockets.
"A former policewoman?" Guan Yingying watched her retreating figure, saying in surprise, "But it looks like her career is over."
Wang Zhuo hummed in response, his gaze fixed on An Qi’s lithe back. He thought what a shame it was that such a great figure couldn't be seen wearing a police uniform for some roleplay fantasies!
"Hey—" A slender hand suddenly appeared before his eyes. "Haven't you seen enough? If you like it so much, I can buy a police uniform to wear for you later, alright?"
