Xiao Yu'er witnessed the transformation too; she shrank into my embrace, frightened, and asked, "What's happening? Why has he changed?"
I said, "Maybe An Ming is a genetically mutated Lycanthrope. Don't be afraid; he won't hurt you."
The youths who had been surrounding them seemed equally startled by An Ming's sudden change. The leader yelled, dropped his weapon, and fled. Thankfully, the remaining few showed some loyalty, dragging the fallen long-haired man away as they left. An Ming, seemingly unconcerned with the matter, scanned his surroundings. Our car was fortunately tucked away in an unlit corner. Seeing nothing amiss, An Ming pulled open the door, got in, and drove off.
Xiao Yu'er murmured, "He looked so terrifying. I wonder if he will harm Sister Liu Xue. I need to tell her to keep her distance from him."
I replied, "There are quite a few espers on Earth. Liu Xue is a public figure; her security is extremely tight. It should be fine."
My phone signal reconnected automatically; Liu Xue was just finishing her makeup. "Our little mermaid princess is there too! Are you at the back door? I'll be right out."
I said, "Everything is secure here. Come on out. There was just a scene of heroic rivalry for beauty happening at the entrance—two groups of men got into a brawl over you."
It seemed such occurrences were commonplace for Liu Xue. She laughed, grabbed her small handbag, and hurried toward the exit. We waited by the back door for about five minutes. First, four bodyguards in black appeared, scanning the area. Only when they confirmed nothing was wrong did Liu Xue emerge from behind the door. I drove the car over, and Liu Xue opened the rear door and got in. Xiao Yu'er, feeling awkward in the front passenger seat, moved to the back to join Liu Xue.
"Was the performance a success? Are you tired?" I asked Liu Xue.
Liu Xue sighed, "It was alright. Xiao Yu'er, I envy you being able to spend every day with your husband."
Xiao Yu'er replied, "I envy you too, having so many admirers. Two groups of men were just fighting over you. One of them, your husband said, was an esper—he looked so cool, like a wolf."
Liu Xue wasn't surprised by espers; she was surrounded by them. Not to mention those far away—Zhu Da, Cai Bao'er, Xia Huren, the Village Chief, and Er Sha—all were unusual. So, encountering another esper wasn't novel. "Hehe, Xiao Yu'er, stop talking; my husband will get jealous."
I said, "I'm not that petty. I support your career. Look, those guys who were fighting are back. Liu Xue, since they took a beating for you, give them an autograph."
Indeed, those same youths were waiting at the street corner outside the window. The long-haired man was gone; injured, he wouldn't reappear. I drove the car up to them. Liu Xue smiled, "I really might go down and sign for them. Don't blame me later if you get jealous tonight."
With that, Liu Xue pulled the door handle. The bodyguards accompanying her were all Super Soldiers; they had already thoroughly analyzed the youths from afar. Even knowing they posed no real threat, four Super Soldiers shadowed Liu Xue closely.
"It's really Liu Xue! Look, oh my god, we finally waited for her!" Several youths shouted and rushed forward. The four bodyguards easily held them back.
"Hello everyone, were you waiting for me?" Liu Xue gave them a faint smile.
The youths were momentarily stunned; Liu Xue's smile almost stole their souls. "We were waiting for you! Are you really the superstar Liu Xue? Can you sign something for us? One of our brothers got hurt waiting for you. Can we take a picture too?"
Someone handed over an autograph book. Liu Xue signed it readily and handed it back. "Signatures, yes. As for photos, that's not up to me. Let me ask."
Liu Xue tapped my car window and asked me, "Hey, they want a photo with me. Do you agree?"
I opened my door and said, "Sure, I'll play along with them tonight, but I have to stand right beside you."
Liu Xue laughed, "Whatever you say."
When I stepped out of the car, the youths froze. "It's you! Are you superstar Liu Xue's driver?"
I replied, "Yes. You want a picture and don't want to share the spotlight with me? You promised me just now."
These youths kept their word, saying, "Alright, don't worry, we won't let you stand too far away; we'll squeeze you in too!"
With the bodyguards present, there were no major incidents during the photo session, although my position was very close to Liu Xue. Considering my role as the driver, the youths didn't object much, so they took a genuine group photo.
The camera belonged to the group. I figured they wouldn't be kind enough to get me a print. However, what mattered wasn't who they were, but their definite affection for Liu Xue. Thus, I never truly felt revulsion toward them. These youths also seemed aware of their less-than-ideal image. Having gotten what they wanted, they didn't linger when the bodyguards 'invited' them to leave.
With a squeak, the Flying Dragon sedan that had driven away returned. The trendy youths who had taken a few steps vanished like smoke when they saw who stepped out of the car. It was An Ming, the guy who had turned into a wolf earlier. Now, he was impeccably dressed, completely devoid of any terrifying appearance, and had even replaced the flowers in his hand. It seemed his actions were swift.
"Miss Liu Xue, hello." An Ming approached with a beaming smile to greet Liu Xue.
Liu Xue stood beside me, not recognizing the flower-bearing gentleman. "Hello, do we know each other?"
An Ming replied, "We didn't before, but we will soon. My name is An Ming, Director of the Federal Tourism Bureau. Miss Liu Xue, it's a pleasure to meet you. I thought I would wait in vain, but I finally get to see your true appearance."
A director of the Tourism Bureau wasn't a high-ranking official, so it was normal for Liu Xue not to know An Ming. She shook his hand politely. "Pleased to meet you. Haha, Director An, you didn't come all this way just to bring me flowers, did you?"
An Ming chuckled, "It is my honor to present flowers to superstar Liu Xue. However, I naturally have another purpose for this visit. Our Federal Tourism Bureau has just launched the Gemini Tour, and we hope Miss Liu Xue can be among the first lucky participants."
Liu Xue looked at An Ming, puzzled, hoping he would elaborate. An Ming continued, "Gemini is a travel route we recently developed. We will even traverse a mysterious wormhole along the way. On Gemini, Miss Liu can see mysterious little dwarves and beautiful mermaids. There will only be ten VIP guests for our first tour group, and I hope Miss Liu Xue can be one of them."
Liu Xue turned to ask me, "Should I go?"
I said, "If you have time, take a rest. I know you've been busy with many performances lately, and you must be tired."
Having received my affirmative answer, Liu Xue turned to An Ming. "Director An, I accept your kind offer, but there must be some obligation involved, right? There's no such thing as a free lunch."
An Ming laughed heartily. "Miss Liu is indeed smart. We hope you can become the image ambassador for our Federal Tourism Bureau and promote our Gemini Tour route. One of the returns the Federal Tourism Bureau offers is this Gemini trip."
Liu Xue asked, "Is it just me? Can I bring a few more people?"
An Ming placed the flowers into Liu Xue's hand. "As long as Miss Liu asks, I can arrange for as many people as you wish to bring, provided your boyfriend is not among them. Miss Liu, how about I treat you to a late-night snack? We can discuss this further."
It seemed An Ming was clearly trying to woo my superstar wife. I stepped forward and said, "Director An, Miss Liu has already agreed to accompany someone else tonight. I think we can discuss the late-night snack some other time."
An Ming's look toward me was distinctly unfriendly. I knew he had no idea who I was at this moment; otherwise, he would have likely fled already. My strength far surpassed that of a mere transformed werewolf like him. An Ming spoke with a hint of disdain. "And who might you be to Miss Liu? Is this your place to interject?"
Liu Xue chuckled, "He is my driver. He was just reminding me not to be late and incur scolding."
"Sister Liu, shouldn't your interaction with your fans end now? It's quite late."
Xiao Yu'er was growing impatient and got out of the car to urge us on.
Xiao Yu'er's appearance brightened An Ming's eyes. He turned to Liu Xue and asked, "And who is this lady with Miss Liu? What should I call her?"
Liu Xue replied, "She is my sister. As for her name, haha, I must keep that confidential. We have an appointment tonight. Director An, since this tourism proposal is mutually beneficial cooperation, please forward the documents to my secretary. Let's go, my esteemed driver."
Liu Xue's attitude toward me seemed to exceed that of a typical employer-employee relationship, which greatly irritated An Ming. His gaze toward me became even more hostile. Instead of being intimidated by his glare, I stepped forward and shook his hand. "Goodbye, Director An. If your travel vouchers go unused, feel free to send me another one."
An Ming clearly didn't want to let Liu Xue leave easily, but the Super Soldiers behind him were no pushovers. With just a gesture, An Ming understood their capabilities. Reluctantly, he got into his car and followed us as we departed.
Along the way, Xiao Yu'er teased Liu Xue. After all, going to Gemini was quite an ordinary matter for us—we could see dwarves and mermaids at home too. Liu Xue, accustomed to being pursued, wasn't angry. Upon returning home, she merrily started fooling around with the others. Meanwhile, I sought out Hua Qingqing.
"Here's a strand of hair; test it for me." When we parted ways, I managed to snag a hair from An Ming during a handshake.
Hua Qingqing looked confused. "Whose?"
I said, "A guy named An Ming. He's probably a genetic mutant. Test it for data collection, and then send someone to monitor his family, just in case they pose a threat to federal security."
"Alright. I have a micro-genetic testing device in my room. Come with me."
Seeing that no one was paying attention to Hua Qingqing and me, I took her hand and headed toward her room. "I wouldn't mind spending the night with you."
I lay down on Hua Qingqing's bed while she took a DNA sample from the strand of hair. Then she sat beside me, waiting for the computer analysis results. It didn't take long—only a few deep kisses—before the results were ready.
"Oh my god, this isn't a gene known on our Earth!"
