Within the grand hall of the Prince of Shou's residence, the space that once hosted lively discussions with Hou Fa was now devoid of its former bustle. Piles of iron coins and peculiar objects were neatly categorized. Han Wei quickly scanned them; he could recognize the scent of his ancestral treasures across eighteen generations even with his eyes closed.
"My Lord, there it is!" Han Wei shouted, his tone brimming with astonishment.
Following the direction of his outstretched finger, they saw it: a pitch-black machine, not much larger than a student's desk, resting on the floor. Several people quickened their pace toward it. I crouched down to examine the rock-excavating device closely.
Judging by the external metal, it was neither iron nor steel, nor the 3x alloy used on Earth, nor even the super-hard Diamond Alloy. However, based on my observation, its external density seemed similar to that of the 3x alloy. There was no sophisticated LCD screen as imagined; only a few commonplace switches. Furthermore, strange symbols were etched onto the body—perhaps a form of writing, but certainly not the script of the Twin City Nation. Although I don't recognize much of the Twin City script, I can certainly recognize the structure of its strokes.
Han Wei, sounding as if he'd narrowly survived a disaster, said, "My Lord, this excavator of mine is very heavy, so no one likely wanted to bother moving it around. That's how it survived."
I said, "Try it out to see if it’s damaged, give us a demonstration or two."
"As you command, my Lord," Han Wei replied.
The group worked together to lift the machine outdoors. Han Wei pressed a button, and the machine let out a heavy roar. He then pressed another, and the metal shield where the head was supposed to be suddenly split open left and right, revealing high-speed rotating blades inside. Ahead of them sat a large boulder. Han Wei adjusted the direction and pressed another button. The machine began to move forward automatically. In a short while, it made contact with the boulder, and plumes of smoke and dust hissed from the stone. The machine advanced into the rock as if cutting through soft mud, making quick work of penetrating it. Moments later, it drilled out from the other side.
Han Wei stopped the machine and approached happily. "My Lord, it works perfectly. Since the width and height it excavates each time aren't very large, creating a tunnel wide and tall enough for a normal person usually requires going back and forth twice to widen the dimensions. However, because the dust generated during operation is excessive, I generally avoid using it unless necessary."
I lightly dipped a finger in some of the cut stone surface; it was incredibly fine and smooth. The metal used for this machine's cutting head is likely no less advanced than the drill fabricated by Xiao Hui using ten million years of Earth's future technology. The only issue is that its height and width are only suitable for shorter individuals; people like us are too large. What civilization could this be from? Did the Twin Stars possess a prehistoric civilization?
Upon careful inspection of the external mechanical parts, aside from the visible track-based propulsion system at the bottom, no other components were discernible. How the power system worked or what the internal mechanisms were remained a mystery. The pitch-black metal outer plating concealed everything, and it was constructed without screws, making disassembly impossible. Even when not operating, the cutter head retracted completely.
Gu Fei stepped forward to remind me. "My Lord, the television set you mentioned is over there. Shall I have it moved back to the Marshal's Camp for you?"
Setting aside Han Wei's heirloom excavator for the moment, I approached the object presented to Zhu Shou, which I suspected was a television. Its screen resembled an Earth-based LCD panel. There were few buttons on the casing; pressing a few randomly yielded no response. I presumed Zhu Shou had thrown the treasure into storage, never exposing it to sunlight, so the solar panel had never activated.
I asked Yun Yao to call Zhou Ni and have her bring a spacecraft with tools. The excavator was Han Wei's treasure, after all; no matter how advanced it was, I couldn't simply confiscate it. I planned to study it and then return it to him.
Zhou Ni arrived with Hua Qingqing. The first impression the two women had upon seeing these artifacts was also an excavator and a television. Hua Qingqing remarked, "It's just that this excavator seems designed for people under one meter tall; it won't be of much use to us."
Han Wei explained, "Madam Hua, when I use it to dig tunnels, I complete the process in four passes: digging four tunnels—up, down, left, and right—and then merging the four tunnels makes the path suitable for us to walk."
Hua Qingqing chuckled, "What a hassle. This thing isn't suitable. When the time comes, I'll have Zhao Qian send you a more practical machine, one that doesn't require close-quarters operation like this one. You can just sit in an office and control it remotely."
Han Wei rejoiced, "Thank you, Madam, thank you, my Lord."
An excavator isn't some priceless artifact, but this matter could only be discussed after returning to Earth. I said to Han Wei, "No need to thank me, but I don't have one right now. Qingqing's machine is something we can only talk about after we get back home. Come on, everyone help move the analyzer out so we can examine the internal structure of these two machines."
For ease of inspection, I had specially equipped the spacecraft with automated perspective scanning equipment. However, it was quite heavy, requiring two or three people to lift. We first aimed the scanner at Han Wei's excavator. The intelligent analysis data displayed on the screen astonished all of us.
"A nuclear power system! That's too advanced!"
Han Wei looked puzzled. "My Lord, what is a nuclear power system?"
I explained, "It's a device capable of a controlled fission chain reaction, capable of providing immense energy for long periods."
Hua Qingqing remarked to me, "This is the first time I've seen a miniature nuclear reactor like this. It differs somewhat from the reactors we possess, likely because the nuclear fuel it uses is different from ours."
Zhou Ni asked, "Is there any risk of a nuclear leak? Perhaps we should keep a distance."
I checked the other data points before answering, "No, there are no gaps in those outer protective plates. The radiation is entirely shielded. It must have been cast in one piece; it's probably impossible to take apart unless we destroy it."
Yun Yao and Linglong, since becoming captains of my personal guard, rarely converse with me in front of others. But with Zhou Ni and Hua Qingqing present, Yun Yao dropped her guard regarding her status. She said, "I traveled extensively throughout the Twin City Nation with the troupe. I am well aware of the current level of technology here. What explains the sudden appearance of such an advanced nuclear power device?"
I gave a wry smile. "Indeed. And the Han family has passed it down for eighteen generations, meaning this machine is at least a thousand years old. How? Logically, humans capable of building such a thing should be incredibly advanced by today, perhaps already capable of breaking free of the Twin Stars."
Hua Qingqing offered her theory, "I believe it's a relic from the previous civilization. Similar to Earth, perhaps the developmental history of civilizations across the entire cosmos follows the same pattern. I recall reading about a scientist who proposed the Mirror Theory; he suggested that every civilized planet is actually a reflection of the others, only separated by vast differences in time. Perhaps Earth's civilization has already been mirrored onto the Twin Stars, with the time difference only appearing due to the distance involved."
"Hmph," the rest of us voiced our disagreement. This theory lacked any basis in fact; it was mere fantasy conceived by bored scientists on Earth. Only Hua Qingqing, dedicated to medical research, seemed to believe it.
Zhou Ni suggested, "Let's check this television set next; perhaps we'll find something new."
The analyzer was aimed at the television. The scan results were equally surprising. The internal structure of this television was much simpler compared to the excavator. In general, its working principle was the same as an ordinary television on Earth. However, its energy source came from the solar panel on the back, and the materials used in this panel provided significantly greater power output than Earth's solar cells. Another difference was its highly advanced signal reception system, whose capability was in no way inferior to our mobile phones.
Since the power stored in the battery was depleted, and there was no external power port to connect to, we could only lift it onto the spacecraft for now. We would let it soak up sunlight for a few days to recharge the battery, and then see what programs it could pick up.
The deputy captain of the personal guard, Man Fu, approached me quietly. "My Lord, Lin Gu has been lingering outside for quite some time. Should you go out to see him? He probably heard the news and came looking for you."
Thinking of that fellow Lin Gu, I put the two objects outside of contemporary civilization out of my mind for the moment. In any case, we would deal with things as they came; planning too much was useless. We would take things one step at a time. First, I would hear Lin Gu's latest excuses for himself. If he still dared refuse to submit, I'd consider him utterly hopeless.
Lin Gu's injuries no longer required mummy-like bandaging, but it was evident that the bones in his face now protruded more sharply. He had likely lost weight from several uncomfortable days. Seeing me emerge from the hall, Lin Gu hurried to meet me, but four personal guards blocked him, preventing him from approaching further. After all, he was still a general of the rebellious army, and one couldn't know if he harbored ill intentions. It was already quite generous not to have seized him along with Zhu Shou's faction.
I waved away the guards and addressed Lin Gu, "Commander Lin, may I now formally invite you to serve the Imperial Court?"
Lin Gu had lost his former arrogance. He dropped to his knees with a thud. "Thank you, Lord Zhao. This repentant subject accepts any punishment you deem fit. The troops you lead fought bravely and maintained strict discipline; I am thoroughly convinced and shall never harbor rebellious thoughts again. Previously, this subject was ignorant and foolish, and now I am too ashamed to remain by your side. I beg Your Lordship to punish me severely."
I thought to myself, you certainly were quite ignorant. Fortunately, I don't care for keeping score against others. Seeing as you spared me the trouble of having to capture you seven times, I won't hold grudges. With that in mind, I said, "Lord Lin, Zhu Shou is utterly finished now. You have also witnessed the conduct of the Imperial New Army. Don't you yet believe that the Court is determined to rectify the world and provide the common people with a life of peace and prosperity?"
Lin Gu replied, "Everything Lord Zhao says, I fully believe. However, as a criminal who rebelled, I dare not comment on state affairs."
I pulled Lin Gu up. "Rise, Lord Lin. I believe the Emperor and the Crown Prince will forgive your blind obedience, especially since the Court also had its share of failings in the past. But they had their own difficulties; how could the accumulated ills of a thousand years be erased overnight? What is gratifying, however, is that both the Emperor and the Crown Prince are keen on implementing new policies, but they severely lack capable talent. That is why the Fifteenth Princess wished to recruit you to serve the Court. Now that you have no lingering attachments, shouldn't you surrender? Must I still resort to capturing you seven times?"
Lin Gu knelt again. "This subject surrenders. Lord Zhao is the only person I, Lin, have ever respected in this life. If I were to remain ignorant after witnessing your benevolence and righteousness, I would truly be blind and idiotic. I came here specifically to beg for punishment, Lord Zhao. I ask for your sentence."
I shook my head and helped Lin Gu up again. "Lord Lin, at your age, don't play these games with me; if others see it, they will say I disrespect the elderly. I know your lifelong aspiration was to do something for the common people someday. How about this: remain here in Huyang Prefecture for now. The Prefect dispatched by the Emperor has not yet arrived. You can assist Commander Cheng of the First Army Group in stabilizing the local situation first. After reporting to the Emperor, your specific duties will be arranged."
Lin Gu said, "I thank Lord Zhao for your grace. My Lord, I am not that old; do not be misled by the appearance of my aged skin and bones. I know that in military campaigns and warfare, I am in no way your equal, but serving you diligently, running errands day and night, is entirely within my capability."
I replied, "Don't think it will be easy here. Huyang and Liyang are now at the border with the Jin Kingdom. The Jin people have long coveted the Twin Stars; they covet our women and grain. If something happens on the western frontier while you remain here, the Crown Prince and I can rest assured."
Lin Gu responded sincerely, "I understand, Lord Zhao. Earlier, I was foolish not to recognize your long-term vision."
The guards brought chairs, and the group sat in the archway of the Prince of Shou's residence, chatting until dark. Regardless of Ma Xiaowei's reasons at the time, her desire to recruit Lin Gu was correct. At the very least, this old man wasn't as greedy or cowardly as other surrendered generals. Moreover, this fellow possessed the pure mindset of the people of the Great Dragon Nation right after liberation—he always considered the common populace in every matter. This was likely related to his humble origins. Such people are exceedingly rare; even without great talent, they are worthy of trust and responsibility. Furthermore, Lin Gu is a shrewd individual; given the opportunity, he can achieve great things. I suspect he might be a cadre on the level of Jiao Yulu.
When conversation flows, a few words are enough, but I found myself getting along quite well with this old man, Lin Gu. Our lively chat was interrupted by Yun Yao. "Lord Zhao, isn't it time to return to camp for dinner? We have to travel tonight."
I stood up and said to Lin Gu, "Old Lin, I must leave. Take care of yourself. When I return to court, I will recommend you to the Emperor. Wait for good news."
Lin Gu, who had been a major leader in the rebellion, dared not harbor any false hopes. He came to beg forgiveness merely to honor the two times I had spared his life. Unexpectedly, instead of punishment, he was to be given an important role, which moved him deeply. Furthermore, he had just heard about the Court's future plans regarding land and the common people; his heart warmed, and his old bones seemed to crackle, filled with youthful vigor.
According to our agreed-upon plan, after dinner, everyone would take the spacecraft directly back to Twin City. The fifteen thousand Imperial Guards would escort the prisoners and depart the next day, returning the way they came. As for the soldiers of the Fourth and Fifth Armies, they would depart for Twin City ten days later, as they needed time for reorganization and retraining.
In my original view, the Inspector Ma Xiaorui and Ma Xiaowei should have traveled with the main army. However, I never even mentioned it, because I knew they wouldn't listen to my arrangements.
Considering the notification from the Court stated that the Emperor and the Crown Prince would meet the returning army ten li outside the city gates, returning to Twin City early was inappropriate. However, I was unwilling to waste precious time on the road. At worst, we could just keep a low profile when we arrived. As for the Ma sisters, they could stay at the Zhao residence first. We would meet up with them to receive the Emperor's grand welcome only after Gu Qi brought Zhu Shou and the others back to the city.
That night was a busy one. Ma Xiaorui was already rushing into the spacecraft named after her before dinner was even finished. She complained while rushing back to Twin City under the cover of night that the flight time was too short, insisting on circling a few more times for enjoyment. If they had traveled by land, it would have taken over ten days, yet we arrived in ten minutes. It was no wonder Ma Xiaorui was dissatisfied.
I didn't have time to indulge Ma Xiaorui's games, so I had Zhou Ni take her around elsewhere. My current task was to check the Imperial Stables to see if anything had happened in my absence, and then arrange for Old Master Tie Zhen to prepare to move the iron smelting plant to Huyang Prefecture. Since there was no environmental pollution here anyway, locating the plant near the Prince of Shou's residence would save the trouble of transporting iron ore.
Under Ah Si's management, the work at the Imperial Stables proceeded methodically. The one thousand stable guards who were initially taken away had already been gathered, and their training was complete. Old Master Tie Zhen wept tears of joy upon hearing that iron ore had been found in Huyang Prefecture. After discussion, the group decided to relocate overnight. The smelting plant didn't have many tools; Yun Yao and Hua Qingqing made three trips with the spacecraft to complete the transfer.
Considering that the Imperial Stables also needed to repair weapons and forge horseshoes, a set of blacksmith tools was left behind. The equipment taken to Huyang would surely be insufficient to keep the smelting plant running, but whatever was lacking could be purchased locally once Old Master Tie Zhen arrived—they weren't short of money now. They had discovered over a hundred tons of iron coins in the Prince of Shou's residence alone, and Lord knows how many tons were rotting away in the treasury. What a waste; they should have used that metal to forge some swords long ago.
While the two spacecraft were transporting goods, I took Linglong and snuck into the Central City. The Eastern Depot was, after all, a major government office. Since we were finally back in Twin City, I needed to check up on Ah Gou's work and see if anything required my attention.
By the time all matters were settled, dawn had broken. With the sun rising, considering the psychological acceptance level of the Twin City residents, the four spacecraft could not be flying around carelessly. Since the Zhao residence courtyard wasn't large enough, the ships had to be hidden entirely within the Imperial Stables. However, while I slept during the day, Yun Yao and Linglong gathered manpower and began excavating a massive underground hangar in the backyard of the Zhao residence, then constructed a roof over the hangar so one spacecraft could be parked inside.
This measure was also taken to cope with unforeseen events, as we often resided within the city. Moreover, intelligence from the Eastern Depot indicated that Twin City was currently experiencing undercurrents. With the constant victories in bandit suppression, banditry was no longer a major concern. The Pang faction and the Xiang faction had resumed their power struggle, and a 'Wang Faction' was slowly emerging within it.
The Wang Faction was formed by the coalition of the eight inner kings: 'Red, Courage, Loyalty, Heart, Protect, City, Bless, People.' Regardless of their previous conflicts, they were forced to unite, recognizing that solidarity brought strength.
Besides these figures who warranted caution, the identity of the 'Dog-Slaying Gang' and their operational methods remained a mystery. Given their indiscriminate slaughter, vigilance was necessary. Although we gained twelve more laser guns from the discovery of Hua Qingqing's escape pod, a straightforward attack is easy to dodge, but hidden darts are hard to defend against, so extra caution was warranted.
Because I hadn't slept a wink the previous night, even the usually energetic Ma Xiaorui remained hidden in her room during the day. However, before dinnertime, she dragged Ma Xiaowei out to organize a street parade. The year-end festival in the Twin City Nation was approaching; the night markets on the streets were thriving, decorated with various lanterns.
Although Hua Qingqing and Cheng Susu were considered steady women, they couldn't resist shopping on Earth. Even Yun Yao, hearing there was fun to be had, was eager to join. Only Linglong remained silent, standing behind me diligently performing her protective duties. This truly touched me; she was the first girl I knew who wasn't tempted by shopping and browsing.
Ma Xiaorui announced to everyone, "I've contacted Chen Chen, Jing Jing, and the others. They'll slip out disguised as court ladies later. We'll go to the Central City night market first to eat New Year's cakes, then check out a few nightclubs. When we're tired of playing, we'll find a decent restaurant for drinks. Tonight, we won't return until we're drunk!"
Ma Xiaowei was still the princess who projected a more conservative outward image. She hesitated, "Is that appropriate? What if someone recognizes us? Father Emperor will be furious if he finds out we snuck back into Twin City."
Ma Xiaorui laughed, "Fifteenth Sister, you worry too much. How many people in all of Twin City know us? Besides, we won't cause trouble; who would recognize us? Once Commander Gu leads the Imperial Guards back to the city, we'll be locked back inside the inner city by Father Emperor again, and we won't have this kind of freedom. So, we must seize this time to have fun!" Ma Xiaowei was clearly tempted by her sister's words. She looked at me and asked, "Are you coming?"
Zhou Ni answered for me, "As far as I know, almost none of the twenty-odd sisters have ever managed to get him to go shopping with them. He absolutely hates meandering around downtown, and he’s terrified of accompanying us while we buy clothes. So, don't ask him; it’s better to avoid an embarrassing rejection." Ma Xiaorui looked at me and exclaimed, "How can you be like that? Such a gloomy man."
"I chuckled without reservation, 'You all go ahead and play; I plan to spend tonight writing about the techniques for refining iron and steel. Once the steel is perfected, I can find a device among the spaceship's maintenance equipment capable of cutting gun barrels and stamping bullets. The next step is to have Old Master Tie forge a batch of firearms, so we don't lose so many men like in the recent great battle. Thinking about how I was just drinking and dining with a bunch of brothers, and in the blink of an eye, they're gone…' Ma Xiaorui exclaimed, 'Oh, you are being too sentimental, a grown man acting like a young woman. I’m leaving you to it.' Yun Yao said, 'You all go ahead; I’ll stay home and keep Brother Zhao company.'
'No need,' Linglong interjected, 'I'll stay and keep the Old Master company. You all don't understand the script of Shuangcheng. I will record for the Master. You take the personal guards with you. Due to the recent turmoil, there are too many refugees in Shuangcheng; be careful something doesn't happen.'
Ma Xiaorui objected, 'Who wants to bring them along? We won't have any fun wherever we go. Sisters, let Linglong stay and work. We’ll bring back a piece of niangao for her when we return tonight; Shuangcheng’s glutinous rice cake is very famous!'
Yun Yao still wanted to insist but was pulled away by Ma Xiaorui. Hua Qingqing was new to Shuangcheng. Zhou Ni and Cheng Susu had already planned to take her out for a stroll tonight because Shuangcheng’s night market is famous throughout the entire Shuangcheng Nation. Since lighting is inconvenient, a place with a night market is already rare, and coupled with Shuangcheng’s prosperity and large population, the night market here is incomparably lively.
For their safety, I still dispatched ten personal guards to follow them. Just in case some lecherous eyes wandered where they shouldn't, the guards could help fend them off. In truth, I claimed I was writing a book purely to escape the soreness in my lower back from walking too much. Women are strange creatures; if you make them walk ten li, they might collapse tired into your arms at night, unwilling to get up. But if you let them wander twenty li of streets, they might return excitedly chattering away half the night.
Linglong prepared a quill pen for me and began grinding ink. Out of nostalgia for the ancient days of the Great Dragon Nation, I had the Master from the Imperial Stables produce some charcoal ink. As for the brush, I had written with one before, but I was too ashamed of my handwriting, so I switched to a goose quill. Having practiced calligraphy with a fountain pen for so long in high school, just scribbling a couple of lines would leave Linglong utterly stunned.
Staring at the emergency light I took from the spaceship, I zoned out slightly. My mind wasn't actually on refining steel. Hua Qingqing was found, and the iron ore was located, but where were Ouyang Qian and He Yuqing? Last night at the Eastern Depot, I specifically asked Agou about the whereabouts of the two women, but there was absolutely no news.
I was certain they hadn't perished in the transport ship explosion because Yun Yao was the last one off the vessel, and she remembered no one else was inside at that time. The only nearby planets were the Gemini Stars, so Ouyang Qian and He Yuqing should still be here; we just haven't found them yet.
Ouyang Qian is one thing; she is my wife. He Yuqing and I had some ambiguous moments—like when I carried her while flying during the Africa inspection and ‘touched’ her rear end—but nothing more ever happened afterward. He Yuqing was dragged to Mars by the other women; as a result, she ended up stranded on an alien world and remains missing to this day.
'Master, this lamp is so convenient. It needs no oil, produces no smoke, and is incredibly bright… Master… Master,' Linglong called out several times when she finished grinding the ink and saw me staring blankly at the light.
I snapped back to attention, 'Yes, this is called an electric lamp. It is the most common household appliance on Earth.'
Linglong picked up the quill pen, 'Master, you speak, and I will write.'
Bang, bang, bang—three slow knocks sounded at the door, followed by Shi Qing’s polite voice, 'Master, dinner is ready. Please work after you and Miss Linglong have eaten.'
Linglong glanced at me and smiled, 'Let's eat first. How can one work on an empty stomach?'
Remembering that Linglong had given up going out to play to stay and keep me company, I emotionally took her hand, 'Linglong, I’ve wronged you. You should have gone out with them. I feel bad for making you stay behind with me.'
Linglong blushed, did not pull her hand away, but instead grasped my hand with her other one, 'Master, Linglong enjoys being by your side. I am not like Ma Xiaorui, who is like a child who never grows up and only knows how to cause you trouble. I hope to shoulder more of your work.'
Whether Linglong truly didn’t want to go out or not, her sentiment truly moved me. Compared to Ma Xiaorui, who only knew how to mess around, she was certainly much more mature—at least she knew how to please me.
Creak—the door opened. Shi Qing peered in, saw our hands clasped, and instantly retreated, her frightened voice following, 'Master, your servant deserves death. I couldn't hear any sound and thought you weren't in the study.'
Linglong broke free from my hand and exited the study first. She put her arms around Shi Qing’s shoulders, 'Sister Qing, why have you become like this again after not seeing you for a while? The Master is an easygoing person; he doesn't like us acting like this. Look at me, being casual is what he likes best.'
I sighed, looking at the cautious Shi Qing, and decided to let her be. Years of habit are hard to change in a short time. During dinner, I insisted that Shi Qing, her sister Shi Shuang, and Butler Fu eat at the same table. Dalì Wán had gone to the Imperial Stables ever since Zhou Ni and Cheng Susu accompanied me to the bandit suppression front line.
The Shi sisters slowly ate the rice in their bowls, piece by piece, sitting obliquely with their bodies, daring to occupy only half a stool, which made me secretly amused. What careful women! They were a completely different type from Linglong and the Ma sisters. They were girls deeply influenced by the traditional ideology of the Shuangcheng Nation. Don't expect any political coup from them anytime soon, but this feeling was still quite novel. After all, on Earth, it's currently matriarchy; enjoying such a high degree of patriarchal deference made anyone’s heart swell with smugness.
Bang! Bang! Bang!—There were pounding sounds outside the door. Two on-duty personal guards shouted, 'Who is it? If you kick down the door of the Zhao Manor, can you afford to pay for it?'
The door opened, and Ma Xiaoda barreled in, 'What broken door? I, Ma Xiaoda, can afford to pay! Move aside, move aside! I’m looking for your Master.'
The personal guards recognized Ma Xiaoda. Seeing the Crown Prince arrive, they dared not stop him, allowing him to rush into the front hall. I dropped my bowl and chopsticks, intending to slip into the back hall. Ma Xiaoda shouted, 'I said, stop hiding! Now that you’re back, why avoid me?'
I smiled awkwardly, 'The spaceship is repaired. I didn’t want to travel with the returning Imperial Guards, so I came back early to rest. I’ll go meet up with Gu Qi and the others when they reach ten li outside the city, and then I’ll receive your father and your inspection.'
Ma Xiaoda said, 'I don't have so many tedious rules. Just keep this from my Imperial Father. Telling me not to tell me should be punished.'
Linglong looked confused, 'Ma Xiaoda, who told you we were back? No one should know, right?'
Ma Xiaoda chuckled, 'A hermit has his own ingenious plan. Come on, I’ll treat you all out for drinks. I have a lot to tell you; we can chat while we drink.'
I knew it was highly likely Ma Xiaorui had leaked the news. She had contacted Xu Chen and Cai Jingjing and even invited them out shopping. Ma Xiaoda usually hangs out at Xu Chen and Cai Jingjing's place, so how could he not find out?
Linglong refused, 'Stop fooling around. Who has time to drink with you? I have to write with the Master after dinner. This is a matter of national importance, do you understand?'
It looked quite amusing for a young girl to say 'Do you understand matters of national importance' to the Crown Prince, but Ma Xiaoda paid her no mind. He grabbed me with one hand and Shi Qing with the other, 'We are all going! Stop eating, stop eating! For the great Marshal Zhao to be eating such plain fare, others would laugh at how our Ma family treats its meritorious servants! And you, Butler Fu, must come too! More people means more liveliness, Jīnglüè, Jīnglüè…'
Jīnglüè and Bai Shi were Ma Xiaoda’s two personal eunuchs. One was responsible for food, clothing, housing, and travel, and the other for etiquette and court protocol. For some reason, Bai Shi was not with them today; it was the always rigid Jīnglüè instead.
Jīnglüè stepped in from the doorway. Ma Xiaoda ordered him, 'You go ahead immediately. Go to the Seafood Restaurant at the East City Gate and reserve two tables. We’ll be there shortly.'
Jīnglüè acknowledged the order and left first. Ma Xiaoda said, 'A seafood restaurant recently opened in the Central City. The dishes they serve are all seafood rarely seen in Shuangcheng. Let’s go, everyone gets to taste something fresh today.'
Eating seafood was certainly better than white rice, so I was naturally happy to accept. However, Butler Fu, Shi Qing, and Shi Shuang adamantly refused to go. They didn't actually know Ma Xiaoda’s true identity; they only knew he was someone of high standing. He was inviting the Master, and although the Master agreed, they were servants, so it was improper for them to accompany them.
But Ma Xiaoda was someone completely unconcerned with propriety. He laughed heartily and told my personal guards, 'Seize these three people and carry them over!'
The personal guards naturally dared not disobey, frightening Butler Fu and the Shi sisters into compliance. I knew Ma Xiaoda was overly excited, so I let him have his way.
Linglong and Butler Fu each carried an emergency light. Butler Fu walked in front, and Linglong walked beside me. Ma Xiaoda curiously took the lamp, 'I say, this thing is really nice. Where is the oil? It’s much brighter than a regular oil lamp.'
Linglong smiled, 'This is an electric lamp. Don't talk nonsense if you don’t understand. The Master's hometown uses this for lighting.'
Ma Xiaoda said, 'Do you have any more? Give me one. The smell of oil lamps is too suffocating when reading at night.'
There were plenty of these items on the spaceship. I said, 'For the sake of your diligent studying, I'll have someone send one to you later.'
The night had just fallen, and there were still quite a few pedestrians on the road. Our two lamps naturally attracted attention, and some curious people followed us all the way to the Seafood Restaurant at the East City Gate. Fortunately, the personal guards, dressed in plain clothes, flanked us, so they didn't press forward to bother us.
Jīnglüè often accompanied Ma Xiaoda here, so he was familiar with the owner. After handing over a few iron coins, two private rooms were immediately cleared, but one was upstairs and one downstairs, which was inconvenient. Ma Xiaoda needed to discuss matters with me and couldn’t dine with Butler Fu and the others. Since he was the Crown Prince, even paying for a meal wouldn't be extravagant, so there was no need to worry about wasting a room. The upstairs would naturally be quieter. Thus, Ma Xiaoda, Jīnglüè, Linglong, and I went upstairs, leaving Butler Fu with Shi Qing and Shi Shuang downstairs.
I recall that on Earth, seafood restaurants in inland cities are always booming, and the situation here is the same. Every table was full. If I didn't lack money now, shipping seafood from the coast here using the spaceship would definitely be more profitable than what they were earning.
After the waiter listed the dishes, I realized that what was called a 'Seafood Restaurant' was actually just a dried goods establishment. Not a single item was fresh; most were dried or preserved seafood products that somehow entered Shuangcheng and caused such a sensation.
But dried goods are better than having nothing to eat, and soaking them in water makes them soft anyway. After casually ordering a dozen extravagant dishes, the waiter scurried away to prepare them. Most of the customers in the common seating area were ordinary people tasting novelties; few could afford the grand dishes. Our two tables alone cost fifty iron coins, enough for an ordinary family's spending for over a decade.
In the large private room, there were only four people. Linglong and Jīnglüè attended to the two gentlemen respectively. Before Ma Xiaoda had even settled his backside, he kept asking me about the situation ahead. Although he had learned of the Great Victory at Huyang through Cai Jingjing, the details of the situation couldn't be clearly explained over the phone. While waiting for the food, I recounted the entire bandit suppression process to him, leaving Ma Xiaoda dumbfounded.
'Did tens of thousands of people really die in the great battle?' Ma Xiaoda couldn't believe it, 'I haven't seen dead bodies since leaving Feiyu County in Feiying Prefecture. Listening to your description of the battle, it's far more spectacular than the rumors flying around outside. The common folk only spread exaggerated nonsense, saying you were some kind of Fire God descended.'
Perhaps after every report on the bandit suppression progress sent to the court, it passed through the mouths of those ministers and then spread to the common people. I said, 'Perhaps some people think the bandit suppression was as glorious as a god descending. But the light from the crematorium outside Huyang City burned for a full day and night. The smell of roasted human flesh permeated for several li in every direction. Our soldiers ate three meals in that environment. If you truly have ambitions, do not let down the painstaking efforts everyone made to quell the rebellion.'
Ma Xiaoda said, 'Don't worry, Zhao Qian. I said I would be a wise ruler. It’s not just because I haven't seen you for a while and want to treat you to a meal. You haven’t been in Shuangcheng for a while, so you don’t know the current situation…'
Jīnglüè stood up, 'Your Highness, this old servant will watch the door to prevent anyone from disturbing your talk with Lord Zhao.'
Just then, the dishes arrived. Ma Xiaoda nodded and continued, 'Besides the Pang Faction and the Xiang Faction, the Wang Faction has now emerged. It is actually a coalition of the Eight Inner Kings. Don’t underestimate their combined strength, even though the Eight Inner Kings hold little real power. The Red King has signaled goodwill toward me, and I want to discuss with you what attitude we should take toward them.'
I had already learned about the Wang Faction from Agou. After some thought, I said, 'The Eight Inner Kings exist entirely because of the Emperor's protection. It is natural for them to try and win you over, the future Emperor. After all, the New Year is approaching, and you will soon enter the court to jointly rule with your father. Your favor or displeasure directly impacts their future fate. As far as I know, these Eight Inner Kings occupy vast territories and consume a large portion of the court’s annual income. For the rise of the court, you will inevitably have to push them aside eventually—not just them, but the Outer Kings as well. However, at the moment, our power is too weak. To govern the court, it is best to make fewer enemies and more friends.'
Ma Xiaoda asked, 'You mean I should placate them for now, and only confront them when our strength is sufficient? Stripping them of their titles and taking their land?'
'Exactly. If you want the country to be rich and the people strong, you must reform land distribution, and the greatest resistance to land reform comes from the Inner and Outer Kings. The conflict between you and them is irreconcilable. But right now, the imperial power is fragmented, and every faction wants to gain more friends and fewer enemies. Therefore, the long-term conflict is temporarily set aside. I suppose the Xiang Faction is also getting close to the Wang Faction now? Their political interests clash significantly, actually.'
Ma Xiaoda nodded, 'You are correct. The Left and Right Chancellors have repeatedly visited the Eight Kings' residences to persuade them. However, some among the Eight Inner Kings are already close to Pang Hu, making it difficult for the Xiang Faction to win them over. But I can manage that.'
'Then you should placate them for now, but don't get too close, lest Pang Hu becomes suspicious of you. Maintain your usual conduct on the surface. Purifying the court is a long-term endeavor; otherwise, one wrong move could lead to a dynastic change, which would be a loss that outweighs the gain.'
Ma Xiaoda laughed, 'You think I can stop playing around? I am just a child. Do we really need to be so cautious? From what you said, we now have over one hundred thousand troops, and numerous fine generals. Plus, the Eastern Depot has established a firm footing in Shuangcheng. Who should we fear?'
'Of the one hundred thousand troops, forty thousand are deployed to Liuyang to mop up remaining bandits, and another twenty thousand are temporarily stationed in Huyang to maintain security throughout the prefecture. The forty thousand troops I planned to use for border reinforcement have not yet been fully organized. Furthermore, many of this hundred thousand are surrendered troops. It will take several months to train them into fierce warriors. Besides, even if we could bring all one hundred thousand into Shuangcheng, do you have the ability to lead them past the Outer City Gates? They originally surrendered as rebels; I cannot be certain they won’t cause trouble at a critical moment.'
Ma Xiaoda showed difficulty, 'You are right. One should not harbor ill intent toward others, but one must guard against others' malice. We can trust the surrendered soldiers for quelling bandits and reinforcing the borders, but we cannot employ them for major undertakings. Moreover, only the Imperial Guards are permitted passage through the Outer City Gates. No matter what, Zhao Qian, Brother Zhao—you allow me to call you that—I must thank you. You have given me hope. I truly didn't expect that the expedition force of eleven thousand warriors would suddenly grow to over one hundred thousand. Although these external troops cannot enter the city, our strength is still growing rapidly. Even Pang Hu will consider your influence now before acting.'
I said, 'You don't need to worry about our strength within Shuangcheng. I have already made plans. The Eastern Depot will rapidly receive some troop reinforcements, eventually reaching the strength of a legion, but we cannot keep too many inside the city—a few thousand should suffice. Gu Qi will be leading fifteen thousand Imperial Guards back to the city, and these men will be reorganized back into their original Guard Offices. I have already instructed Gu Qi not to select useless stragglers but only those absolutely trustworthy.'
Ma Xiaoda was overjoyed, 'I understand! Through these fifteen thousand men, we can gradually control five Guard Offices!'
'Precisely. Even if we cannot control them outright, we can rely on them to prevent the Imperial Guards from rioting or disobeying orders. Furthermore, I have reminded Gu Qi, and he has pledged his loyalty to you. I observed his character during this period; he is trustworthy.'
Ma Xiaoda embraced me, 'That's wonderful, Zhao Qian! You have helped me immensely. Unlike my Imperial Father, who only knows patience and concession. By the time he finally has nowhere left to retreat, he will realize he has nurtured a threat! With the External Army, the Eastern Depot, the Imperial Guards, and the Imperial Stables, what can Pang Hu use to fight us? Although he controls the Ministry of War, the Ministry is just an empty shell. Even if the commanders of the Imperial Guard Offices are his men, what good is that if the soldiers do not obey them? That old man constantly tries to seize power from my Ma family’s dynasty. I will eventually make him understand my power!'
I said worriedly, 'The External Army must ultimately be transferred to the Ministry of War. Overall, Pang Hu still has the advantage, supported by numerous officials. We are currently at a disadvantage.'
Thinking of the recently absorbed one hundred thousand troops, Ma Xiaoda also became worried. 'Yes, if nothing unexpected happens, they will eventually be assigned to the Local Military and Political Secretariat, which is effectively handing them over to Pang Hu. Wouldn’t that just increase their strength?'
'To solve this problem, we must start with the Local Military and Political Secretariat and wrest power from Pang Hu.'
Ma Xiaoda asked, 'How do we seize it? We have absolutely no foundation in the localities…'
'Step by step. I have already laid the groundwork for you in Huyang and Liuyang. If your Imperial Father permits me to reinforce the border, I can also handle the work in Feiying Prefecture for you—it’s on the way, after all. Furthermore, the candidates I select will not be opposed by Pang Hu immediately, making the appointments easier to secure under the pretext of official orders.'
Ma Xiaoda said, 'That’s good. You are currently aligned with the Pang Faction, so Pang Hu would be happy for you to recruit more influence. But if I associate too closely with you, will Pang Hu become suspicious?'
'He certainly will. So you need to be careful in the future. Don't brazenly rush to the Zhao Manor. If Pang Hu becomes suspicious of me, then the generals I recommend to your Imperial Father, along with Xiao Wei, will be targeted by him.'
Ma Xiaoda laughed, 'Oh, very good. Your relationship with my sister has progressed rapidly recently, even your address has changed to 'Xiao Wei'—so intimate! Tell me, should the address change now? Should I call you Brother-in-law?'
'Don't think dirty thoughts. We are just very good friends right now. You can ask your sister if you don't believe me.'
In the private room downstairs, the two young women and one elder stared wide-eyed. They had no idea what the items on the table were. Shi Shuang cautiously picked up a shrimp kernel, 'Sister, what is this? Butler Fu, you are well-traveled; do you know what these are called?'"
Fubo shook his head. “I’ve lived a long life, yet I’ve never set foot in a decent restaurant. I never expected that Young Master Ma would be so generous. To be honest, I don’t even recognize most of these dishes.” Shi Qing coughed lightly. “Indeed, how can we servants be so ill-mannered? He must be a young master from a wealthy family; the Master holds him in high regard.” Shi Shuang asked, “If his surname is Ma, whose young master could he be? I’ve never once heard the Master mention anything about his background.” Fubo glanced toward the commotion outside the private room, then spoke solemnly to the two sisters. “The Master dislikes noise. With only the three of us servants in the residence, I’ll take the liberty of speaking plainly: beyond what is required of us as servants, we should neither concern ourselves with, inquire about, nor act upon anything else.” Shi Qing nodded. “Fubo is right to remind us. Servants shouldn't pry into the Master’s affairs. We will be mindful from now on.” Although Shi Shuang was curious, she was also a naturally well-behaved child. She kept her lips sealed and dropped the subject, though her eyes remained fixed on the large fish on the table. Fubo smiled. “Since we are here, let’s not be reserved, lest we slight the kindness of Young Master Ma and the Master. Eat up, taste what these seafood things are truly like.” Though the seafood was likely ersatz, for the three who had never tasted it before, it was an immense surprise—nothing like the wild game found in the mountains. Perhaps some might be put off by the slight fishiness, but those accustomed to it would certainly find it utterly satisfying. First came a muffled scuffle from outside the private room, then the door was thrust open. The waiter scurried in, looking embarrassed. “My apologies, esteemed guests, it wasn’t my intention to let them in; it was them…” Smack! The waiter was knocked backward, stumbling out of the room to land flat on his back. Four long-haired young men stood framed in the doorway. Fubo, being a simple, honest man, was startled by the scene, and the two girls, being timid, dared not speak. They were far removed from the floor above and below, and the seafood restaurant was filled with tremendous clamor; no one knew what was transpiring within this room. Fortunately, Shi Qing had experienced several significant incidents before. She asked timidly, “What do you want? In broad daylight, are you attempting a robbery?” The four looked utterly brazen. The one with the cross-eyes sneered, “Well now, aren’t you little ladies pretty. My four brothers and I have been operating in the east sector of Middle City for ages, yet we’ve never clapped eyes on you.” Fubo saw that these four had ill intentions. He stepped in front of Shi Qing and Shi Shuang. “Stay back! Don't get any ideas about them, or else…” Whoosh. A knife blade pressed against Fubo’s chest, instantly silencing him. The cross-eyed man barked, “Old man, wise up and shut your mouth. My four brothers aren't after sex today. We’re only interested in those two lamps you have. However, that lady was right just now; we won’t rob you in broad daylight either. Name your price. Since we’ve taken a liking to your possessions, we’ll pay for them.” The lamps had not been taken upstairs; they remained resting on a small stand in the corner of the room. Shi Qing and Shi Shuang knew these were the Master’s possessions and could not suffer any harm. The two girls jumped forward, each shielding a lamp. Out of reverence for the two magical lamps, they were kept off. The four ruffians hadn't noticed the items in the dim room initially, but the girls’ movements alerted them. The cross-eyed man subtly gestured to the man with the handlebar mustache beside him. That man pulled two iron coins from his pouch and tossed them onto the table, then said, “Two little ladies, the money is paid. Now hand over the lamps. One iron coin per lamp—that’s a king’s ransom from us! Don't be foolish. In the eastern gate of Middle City, everyone knows the four of us—we are known as the Four Heroes of East City. Even the Imperial Guards have connections among us, let alone the Judicial Office. We offer gifts and bribes during every festival. Do you understand what I’m implying?” Shi Shuang retorted, “Our Master fears none of you. You had better leave quickly, or the Master will have the Eastern Depot arrest you.” “Ha! Hahahaha! Brothers, this little lady says she’ll have the Eastern Depot arrest us? Perhaps she’s the mistress of the Third Head Warden! We mustn't offend her then.” The cross-eyed man’s comment sent the other three into booming laughter. Shi Qing and Shi Shuang’s faces turned green with rage, yet Fubo was held at knifepoint, leaving them too scared to even shout.
Outside the Seafood House. Mao Lian Lei, Sun Da Sheng, squinted left and right, unable to decipher the characters on the sign. “Hai… Guan? What kind of Guan? Sixthie, Sixthie! Old Six!” The scholar, Old Six, who had been absorbed in watching the bustling street scene, snapped awake. “Big Brother, what is it?” Sun Da Sheng said, “This… Guan. I’m starving.” Old Six glanced over. “Big Brother, it’s a Seafood House. Smelling this aroma, it must be delicious.” The short man squeezed out from between the two men's legs. “Big Brother, we don’t have a single iron coin left. Unless we pawn our trousers, we can’t even afford a bowl of rice. But at least we made it to Twin City alive; many didn’t last that long and starved on the road.” Sun Da Sheng licked his lips, then addressed the two remaining brothers. “Do you remember what I told you?” They replied, “We remember, Big Brother. We came to Twin City to start anew, to carve out a new domain for our Flying Fish Gang.” “Exactly! So, having no money is not the issue; confidence is what matters.” The two rubbed their bellies. “Big Brother, we’re starving to death without food. How can we have confidence?” Sun Da Sheng scoffed. “Nonsense! Others may starve, but we won’t. What are we? We are gang members! Since we passed through the Outer Gate and the Middle Gate smoothly, it proves we have ability. Now, everyone inside, let’s eat! Taste every single best dish this Seafood House has to offer!” Old Six and the short man jumped. “Boss, this place looks high-class. We’re newcomers; we probably can’t afford to provoke them.” Sun Da Sheng kicked them both. “Damn it! Who said we can’t afford it? If we’re going to do something, we should make it impactful. What’s the point of bothering with small shops? Let’s go! Follow Big Brother inside, eat a meal on the house, and then pick a fight with them! Once we’re famous, recruiting followers won't be a problem.” Fei Yu County had fallen several times. Sun Da Sheng’s Flying Fish Gang had been soundly beaten by the horse bandits. With no other choice, he led his crew toward Twin City to try and establish themselves. But the journey was plagued by mountain bandits, treacherous swamps, or encounters with fierce beasts on the mountain paths. Out of more than a dozen brothers who set out, only these three remained upon reaching Twin City. However, Sun Da Sheng was an optimist; he wouldn't be deterred by such minor setbacks. He believed that paths were made by those who walked them, and tonight, he would take his first step from this so-called Seafood House. Smash! Sun Da Sheng strode into the main hall, walked straight to the service counter, and slammed his hand down to assert dominance. “Waiter! Waiter! Get out here for your master!” Everyone seemed busy elsewhere. After shouting twice, a waiter sheepishly ran over, scratching the back of his head. “Greetings, honored guest. What would you like to order? We specialize in seafood—ginseng, abalone, lobster, octopus—we have everything, guaranteed to satisfy your palate.” Sun Da Sheng deliberately feigned arrogance. “Bring us a platter of everything. Find us a good spot, and bring several pots of fine wine. And a huge basin of rice!” The waiter scrutinized their somewhat tattered clothing. “Honored guest, our dishes are quite expensive. Perhaps you should reconsider? This establishment does not offer credit. You don’t look like the esteemed masters at the two tables upstairs and downstairs.” Sun Da Sheng erupted in anger, slamming the table again. “Are you tired of living, damn you? You dare look down on us? They look like masters, but do we look like grandsons?!” The waiter was genuinely intimidated by the fierce-looking Mao Lian Lei. “No, honored guest! It’s just that they look handsome and the ladies look beautiful. But they’ve offended the Four Heroes of East City; they are currently being extorted.” Sun Da Sheng heard this and slammed the table again. “Damn it! We just arrived in the territory and hear people pulling stunts like this right ahead of us? Isn’t that bad luck? Perfect! Let’s meet those Four Heroes of East City and establish the prestige of our Flying Fish Gang!” The waiter warned, “Honored guest, the Four Heroes of East City are formidable. Not only are they skilled fighters, but they also have ties with the Imperial Guards and connections to the Judicial Office in Middle City. You really shouldn't provoke them…” Sun Da Sheng cared nothing for the Imperial Guards or the Judicial Office. He only knew that one spoke with their fists. Whoever had the harder fist could stand firm here. Even if he didn’t confront the Four Heroes today, the Flying Fish Gang would eventually have to deal with such people to establish themselves in Middle City. Today is as good as any other day. Perhaps beating them away will earn them a free meal at this restaurant! Later, they might even hire the place as their lookout post. “Lead the way,” Sun Da Sheng said coldly. “Take us to meet the Four Heroes!” The waiter dared not disobey and led the three toward the private room. He secretly hoped someone would teach those four thugs a lesson; they were always arrogant, and one of them had just shoved him flat on his back moments ago. Old Six and the short man, accustomed to fighting alongside Sun Da Sheng, followed silently behind, but each casually gripped a weapon. Old Six grabbed a chair, and the short man picked up a sturdy umbrella someone had left by the wall—the handle was thick and solid. The door to the private room was still ajar. The waiter pointed inside. “They are in there. They’ve already drawn blades! But don’t start fighting here, or I’ll call the patrolling Imperial Guards. After that, you all handle your own business.” Sun Da Sheng pulled the waiter who was blocking the doorway. The waiter stumbled again, falling slightly harder this time. He grumbled as he left to attend to other guests. He had seen all sorts of riffraff in the restaurant; let them sort out their own mess. The place wasn't his, after all. Sun Da Sheng cautiously peered inside. Damn it! They really are scum. The four thugs were clearly bad news. One cross-eyed man was holding a knife to an old man’s throat, while two others were making moves on the young women. The last one stood there looking vacant, like an idiot. Sun Da Sheng quietly grabbed a jar of wine from near the door, then gave a meaningful look to Old Six and the short man. The three rushed in with a united shout. The cross-eyed man was momentarily stunned by the shout, but then a wine jar smashed onto his head. The sharp wine stung his eyes so badly he couldn't open them, and the knife in his hand was snatched away. The two men who had been struggling with Shi Qing and Shi Shuang both felt a sharp blow to the top of their heads—the Baihui acupoint! Their vision swam with stars, and they collapsed onto the floor. The remaining thug was overwhelmed by the surprise attack from the three and couldn't even muster a defense. Sun Da Sheng cursed, “What pathetic Four Heroes! Remember this: from now on, this East City territory is covered by the Three Tigers of the Flying Fish Gang! Get out!” The two men who had been struck on the head shook off their daze and lunged at the trio. In the ensuing chaos, the candles in the room were knocked over. Shi Qing and Shi Shuang screamed and pulled Fubo out of the room.
The procurement team from the Imperial Stables arrived in Middle City that afternoon, but their purchasing wasn't finalized until shadows had lengthened. However, one major task remained: Steward Miao, in charge of procurement, was entrusted by the senior staff of the entire Directorate to buy some seafood for the kitchens, as Commander Ah Si had decreed a banquet for the supervisors' wives the next day. The money for the seafood was pooled personally by the Commander, the Centurions, and the leaders of various divisions. To save a little money while buying premium goods, Steward Miao haggled intensely with Foreman Huang, who managed the main hall. “Foreman Huang, you are too much of a cheat! Asking me for thirty iron coins for this dried-up junk? You might as well kill me.” Foreman Huang replied, “Take it or leave it. I don't know if I’ll be punished for selling this to you secretly. Tell me, Steward Miao, does the head chef at the Imperial Stables even know how to cook seafood? Don't waste these prime ingredients.” Steward Miao suspected the kitchen staff wouldn't know how to prepare it. “How about this, Foreman Huang: if you teach me the method for cooking these dishes, I’ll pay the thirty iron coins.” Foreman Huang smiled. “Deal. What kind of unit is the Imperial Stables? People are desperate to curry favor with you daily. Pay me first, put your purchase away so no one sees it, and then we can talk in the main hall. If I sneak into the rear courtyard, the boss might catch me—that counts as deserting my post.” Steward Miao knew they couldn’t leave the city tonight, but the Imperial Stables had a temporary base in Middle City at the Zhao Residence. He often delivered purchased vegetables there because they lacked staff; one old man and two young women found grocery shopping inconvenient, yet many personal guards were housed there, requiring fresh supplies every two or three days. After the transaction, Steward Miao followed Foreman Huang to the main hall. Since he wasn't leaving tonight, he had plenty of time to learn cooking. As the two stood by the service counter, speaking in low tones, two sharp female cries suddenly pierced the air, followed by three people bursting out of a private room. Foreman Huang cursed loudly, “What is the meaning of this? Who was in charge of that room? Do you want to lose your job? What if we alarm the other patrons!” The waiter who had ushered people in earlier had long since fled when the fight broke out, but Foreman Huang’s inquiry forced him to respond. “Foreman Huang, it was the Four Heroes of East City causing trouble! They were extorting those two young ladies and the old man!” The trio—one old, two young—had just reached them, and the waiter pointed. “Fubo? Miss Qing? Miss Shuang?” Steward Miao certainly knew the three well; he saw them almost every other night. The old man and the two girls always showed concern for him during his overnight stays and even helped him sort vegetables. Fubo, recognizing the man before him, said urgently, “Steward Miao! Someone inside is trying to steal the Master’s lamps! Their own group started fighting!” Shi Qing corrected quickly, “No, no, Fubo, you misunderstood. The three who went in later were helping us.” Foreman Huang was still listening when Steward Miao exploded. “What are you standing around for? Guests in your establishment dare to rob the possessions of our Commander Zhao? Report it to the authorities immediately!” Not only was the waiter terrified, but Foreman Huang was also deeply shaken. They might disregard the stewards of the Imperial Stables, but they dared not offend the Commander in the slightest. Never mind how favored he was by the Emperor and Grand Tutor Pang, the mere thought of the man who led ten thousand soldiers into battle and routed tens of thousands of bandits was enough to quell any opposition. Foreman Huang yelled at the waiter, “Report it! Hurry!” The waiter stammered, “Foreman, the Four Heroes are connected to the Judicial Office. If we report this, we might only offend them unnecessarily.” Foreman Huang snapped, “You idiot! Those four fools are done for today. They dared touch the property of an Imperial Stables Commander! Are you afraid the Judicial Office scum will go easy on them? I heard Commander Zhao burned tens of thousands of people alive with one fire. Now we’ll see something!” The waiter rushed out of the Seafood House and nearly collided with a squad of patrolling Imperial Guards. He immediately called them in. The dozen or so guards efficiently stormed the interior and dragged seven people out without much effort. “What’s all this noise?” Two men in Feiyu (Flying Fish) robes entered. Some of the more timid diners began fleeing toward the exit. According to legend, every single one of those Feiyu agents was merciless. It was rumored that when a corrupt official refused to confess, he entered the Eastern Depot a man and emerged a ghost. Foreman Huang, seeing the Feiyu agents, shrank backward slowly, and when no one was looking, he darted back to the rear courtyard. “Boss! Boss! Eastern Depot agents are here! You need to hide quickly!” With a creak, a door opened, and a striking, sensual Black woman peered out. “Have they said what they’re doing? Are they here for me?” Foreman Huang replied, “I don’t know! The Four Heroes of East City were trying to rob the Imperial Stables Commander’s things and were just caught by the Imperial Guards. Then two agents came in, and I ran back immediately to warn you.” The sexy Black woman flashed a set of pearly white teeth. “Go back out and check again! They keep telling me to hide in the cellar as soon as people arrive; I’m going stir-crazy!” Foreman Huang urged, “Boss, for your safety, you should go to the cellar. If there’s no danger, I’ll call you out.” The Black woman sighed. “Alright, then. But you better deactivate that alarm quickly, or I truly will suffocate.”
