The ordeal finally concluded, and the woman with the triangular eyes shot a withering glare at the two young people before returning to her ward alone. From beginning to end, Xiao Shu and Xiao Yu never understood what they had done to offend the old woman so much that she would incite a mob to beat them severely. Perhaps it was anger that had been suppressed for too long! The woman with the triangular eyes exacted repayment from the two youths for her accumulated dissatisfaction with the current situation and the injustices she had previously suffered, as if collecting a long-overdue debt. Although the outcome was not exactly as she had envisioned, the bitter resentment in her heart had certainly been vented.
Xiao Shu placed the locket with the photograph into Xiao Yu’s hand. Xiao Yu, stiff as a wooden figure, looked at the picture of his father, mother, and sister inside. Tears welled up and streamed down his face, which he quickly wiped away with the palm of his hand. He then hung the locket around his neck, forcing a smile as he told Xiao Shu, “There are no regrets left! I’m not going back to find my sister anymore; we need to find a way to give my eyes to Hua Gu.” As he spoke, the corners of his mouth began to turn down as if he were about to cry, but he suddenly shot his eyes upward, holding the tears back.
At that very moment, Xiao Shu’s heart felt as if it were being carved by a knife. The thought of calling Li Xiaohao, of humbling herself to beg him for help in arranging the eye transplant for Hua Gu, brought an indescribable sense of suffocation welling up inside her. She simply could not bring herself to lift the phone and call that devil with whom she shared the same blood.
However, a friend’s request had to be honored, especially when it was Xiao Yu’s dying wish. He began pacing restlessly outside the hospital entrance, sighing with every step. Seeing the doctors in their white coats moving in and out of the entrance, a specific person suddenly sprang to mind. He quickly pulled out his cell phone and dialed Old He’s number. Old He’s hoarse voice answered immediately.
“Hello, Old He, it’s Xiao Shu. What’s wrong with your voice?”
“Probably too much strain these past few days, caught a chill. Have you found Xiao Yu?”
“We found him…” Xiao Shu deliberately paused, then continued, “He’s at the suburban hospital. There’s something I need to ask you.”
“En, what is it? Tell me.”
“Did you send that dark-skinned corpse to your friend for an autopsy?”
“En, he’s processing the body now. What’s up?”
“Can this friend of yours perform an eyeball transplant?”
Upon hearing Xiao Shu’s sudden question, there was a silence on the line. After a long pause, Old He finally spoke with deep concern, “Why the sudden interest in this matter?”
Xiao Shu subconsciously turned her back to Xiao Yu and lowered her voice, “Xiao Yu doesn’t have much time left. He wants to donate his eyes to Hua Gu.”
Another silence followed on the other end; this one lasted much, much longer. If the phone hadn't continuously shown a successful connection, Xiao Shu would have sworn Old He had hung up. Just as she was repeatedly calling out, “Hello… hello… Old He… hello…” into the receiver, the line suddenly clicked into a busy signal.
However, only a few seconds later, Old He called back. As soon as Xiao Shu answered, she asked anxiously, “Can you do an eyeball transplant?”
Old He sighed deeply and said softly, “Yes, bring the two of them over. Xiao Yu knows the way; it’s the mental hospital where he used to live.”
“Okay, we’ll be right there.” A wave of relief washed over Xiao Shu, and she immediately rushed to tell Xiao Yu the good news. The two hurriedly returned to the ward, completed the discharge procedures for Hua Gu, hired an ambulance at a premium price, and set off for the psychiatric hospital, bringing Ah Li and Xiao Hei along.
